Episode 3
Episode 3 of Namib opens by shedding light on how Shim Jin-woo lost his hearing. In a flashback, we see Soo-hyun, preoccupied at an amusement park while her husband was away, look away briefly—just long enough for Jin-woo to get into an accident that resulted in his hearing loss.
In the present, Soo-hyun takes Jin-woo to the factory despite his reluctance. We learn that after the accident, Soo-hyun discovered a school assignment where Jin-woo expressed his dream of becoming a CEO like his mother and owning a factory someday. It was then that Soo-hyun began teaching him to read lips and later implemented safety measures at the factory to support him.
After dropping Jin-woo home, Soo-hyun visits her friend Jeong-hwa’s café. Jeong-hwa, a former hit artist from Soo-hyun’s previous company, plays a key role in the family’s story. Back home, Soo-hyun seeks her husband Jun-seok’s help in nurturing Yoo Jin-woo’s artistic potential.
Meanwhile, Shim Jin-woo catches Yoo Jin-woo sneaking out to work at the club. The next day, Yoo Jin-woo steps up to help Shim Jin-woo by getting rid of his bullies, bribing them with merchandise he had taken when he left the company. Later, during a practice session at Jeong-hwa’s café, both Soo-hyun and Jun-seok recognize Yoo Jin-woo’s potential. However, Jun-seok has his doubts, observing that Jin-woo doesn’t command the stage while performing.
Soo-hyun, on the other hand, sees an opportunity. She meets with the producer of Star Rise and pitches Jin-woo’s story, believing it has the makings of a compelling reality TV narrative. The producer agrees but insists that Jin-woo’s mother must appear on-screen to complete the story.
Elsewhere, Shim Jin-woo begins to develop feelings for Ji-yeong, Yoo Jin-woo’s only friend and a fellow trainee at Pandora Entertainment. The trio throws a birthday party for Jun-seok, briefly lightening the mood.
Later, Soo-hyun learns from Yoo Jin-woo’s aunt that he has a habit of self-harm. Concerned, she confides in Jun-seok, fearing that Jin-woo’s self-destructive tendencies could hinder his ability to become a star.
Toward the end of the episode, Shim Jin-woo discovers Yoo Jin-woo’s secret: he works at the club to pay off debts, worried that Soo-hyun might abandon him. That night, Shim Jin-woo sees him off for his shift. However, Jin-woo gets into an accident while escorting drunken VIPs. The episode closes with Jin-woo slipping into a panic-stricken state, leaving us on a tense note.
The Episode Review
Namib takes a deeper, more introspective turn in Episode 3, delving into the complexities of its characters and narrative. What initially seemed like a straightforward story about an abandoned young man’s rise to stardom evolves into an interesting, layered exploration of trauma and resilience. Yoo Jin-woo’s character is particularly compelling, as his unresolved abandonment issues and self-doubt cast a long shadow over his journey.
The accident, while subtle in its immediate impact, feels like a pivotal plot device that could shape the story moving forward. The episode also raises important questions: can Soo-hyun and her team provide the emotional and professional support Jin-woo needs to succeed?
And perhaps more crucially, can Jin-woo confront his demons and learn to love himself enough to truly shine? We don’t know that yet but we look forward to the next episode!
