Episode 1
Episode 1 of Namib begins with Kang Soo-hyun searching for Yoo Jin-woo, who is supposed to compete in the Star Rise competition for pop stars. Jin-woo disappears without any prior notice, but Soo-hyun manages to find him on the rooftop and brings him back for his performance.
The scene then cuts to Kang Soo-hyun as Pandora’s CEO, scouting rookies to debut as K-pop idols. Meanwhile, Yoo Jin-woo, a long-term trainee at Pandora, slacks off, unconcerned about being left behind. Instead, he earns extra cash by selling exclusive pictures of popular idols at the company.
Elsewhere, we meet Shin Jin-woo, Kang Soo-hyun’s hearing-impaired son, who is bullied by his schoolmates. His father, a former producer who co-founded Pandora with his wife, Shim Jun-seok, is frustrated with Soo-hyun’s unilateral decisions—especially her choice to buy a sock factory for Jin-woo, for which she has already deposited an initial sum.
Amidst this, a conspiracy arises at the company to replace Soo-hyun as CEO. Pandora has been acquired by Smile Investment, which appoints their candidate—a former team leader at Pandora—as the new CEO. Following this change, long-term trainees are let go, including Yoo Jin-woo, who now bears the additional burden of repaying the 200 million won debt his mother had borrowed.
The new CEO, Jang Hyun-chul, confronts Soo-hyun, revealing that the takeover was an act of revenge. Hyun-chul accuses Soo-hyun of ruining his life. Meanwhile, Chris, another employee at the company, offers Jin-woo a job at his club and persistently warns him not to trust anyone. It is also revealed that Chris is working with the new executives at Pandora.
During this time, another company official suggests that Soo-hyun should consider recruiting Yoo Jin-woo. Initially hesitant, Soo-hyun decides to meet with Jin-woo after reviewing footage of his childhood performances as a trainee. The episode ends with Jin-woo proposing to protect Shim Jin-woo from bullies, hoping to make himself a more attractive bargain.
The Episode Review
The debut episode of Namib clearly sets the expectations for the series—it’s a story about a poor trainee rising to the top. The show promises a wholesome, healing K-drama, focusing on character growth and perseverance. Moreover, the narrative draws parallels with films like The Blind Side, especially in the emotionally charged opening scene between Yoo Jin-woo and Kang Soo-hyun.
The episode also touches on themes like nepotism, privilege, and inequality in the entertainment industry. Jin-woo’s comment about trainees without connections struggling to debut aligns with the central theme and title of the show. “Namib” symbolizes Jin-woo and Soo-hyun’s journey from nothing to proving their worth on the stage.
