My Love Mix-Up! (Thai) – Season 1 Episode 9 Recap & Review

Episode 9 Recap – Kongthap’s Birthday

The recap for My Love Mix-Up Episode 9 begins with a bit of a time skip from the previous episode — it is the first day of Grade 12. Atom is ecstatic to see that the new seating arrangement has him sitting close to Kongthap and Mudmee. But Mudmee isn’t in a good mood. Apparently, she and Half went on a few dates during the school break. Despite talking for a year now, Half still hasn’t told Mudmee that he likes her or wants her to be his girlfriend.

This year, Mr Annop is their class teacher. He hands out aptitude tests to the students. Later, Atom realises he’s the only one who doesn’t know what career to pursue while his friends have it figured out. All Atom wrote on his test was that he wanted to pursue a department that would make him rich. Atom also learns that Kongthap’s birthday is next week, although Kongthap doesn’t consider it a big deal.

When Mudmee sees the meteor club is hosting an event for a meteor shower, she invites Half to go with her. The oblivious Half doesn’t understand why she wants it to just be the two of them. At home, Atom asks his mother for an advance on his pocket money. He wants it to buy Kongthap a gift but lies to his mother, making up another excuse. When he rushes off to have a shower, his mother sees his aptitude test and seems dismayed.

Back in school, Mudmee gets asked out by another boy to go watch the shooting stars. Half sees him go by and asks Mudmee what happened. She explains and he, again obliviously, says she can go with the boy if she wants. Mudmee gets angry and declares she won’t ask to go with Half anywhere again.

In order to earn some money, Atom takes up a part-time job at Sin’s diner. He asks Atom why he chose a server’s post instead of working in the kitchen, but Atom doesn’t respond. In class, Atom and Kongthap realise Mudmee is mad at Half. He tells them what happened and says he can’t do anything because he’s not officially Mudmee’s boyfriend.

Later, Kongthap tells Atom they should let Half and Mudmee figure it out on their own. They move on to the subject of Kongthap’s birthday. Kongthap doesn’t want anything but Atom insists that he’s going to give him a present.

The day arrives and Kongthap kicks off his birthday by having breakfast with his mother. When she realises he wants to pursue veterinary medicine and will probably study in Bangkok (two hours away), she grows a little upset that he will also be far away from her, like his father. She tells him they should spend more time together.

At Sin’s diner, Atom tells Half to either get serious about Mudmee or let her go. Sin enters to tell Atom that a customer has booked the diner for a birthday and gives him a box of fairy lights to set up around the place. Sin then speaks to Half about his problem. Half is afraid that he won’t be able to match how much Mudmee has done for him. Sin says things like this can’t be measured and a relationship is just two people who feel happy to be with each other. This boosts Half’s mood and he rushes off.

The birthday party arrives and it’s none other than Kongthap and his friends. A pleasant surprise for Atom! Meanwhile, Half runs all the way to the meteor shower event on the school roof. Mudmee, who is just signing in, is approached by the other boy again. She looks at her eraser which has Half’s name on it and then angrily throws it off the roof.

When Half arrives, Mudmee is already gone. Turns out, she and her friends are looking for the eraser on the school grounds. She tells them she should have been more considerate of Half’s feelings and discomfort. She’s going to let him go now. Her friends are called back to the event but Half steps up.

He’s found the eraser. He says he never felt uncomfortable or forced. He also admits he isn’t a romantic. Will Mudmee still accept him? She says she’s known all of this and likes him for who he is. Half finally confesses that he likes Mudmee and asks her to be his girlfriend. She says yes!

Back at the diner, Sin injures his hand and asks Atom to take over in the kitchen instead. Atom admits he can’t cook due to a mishap when he was a kid. He caused a fire while cooking and his mother was hurt. But Sin believes he can do it. Atom cooks the food and Sin guides him through it. Kongthap and his friends thoroughly enjoy their meal.

Next is dessert and Atom adds decoration to the cake Sin had earlier baked. He brings it out and everybody sings for Kongthap. After the meal is over, Kongthap’s friends leave while the two boys hang out some more. Atom asks Kongthap what he wished for while blowing out the candles.

He confesses he wished for Atom to figure out what faculty he wants to pursue. Considering how happy Atom seemed cooking, Kongthap asks why he doesn’t go for a food-related career. Atom describes the accident from his past again. Kongthap says that Atom has grown up and is different now. He also assures him that his mother doesn’t blame him.

Then it’s time to bring Atom’s big birthday gift out. It turns out to be jerseys with Kongthap and Atom’s initials on them. One for Mommam, one for Kongthap and one for himself. At that moment, Sin switches on all the lights Atom had earlier set up around the diner for Kongthap’s birthday and the two boys share a heartwarming moment.

When he’s back home, Kongthap’s mother sees a photograph of him and Atom together and seems concerned. On the other hand, Atom’s mother sees that Atom has changed his aptitude test answer and has written Food Business. She smiles. A flashback shows Atom and Kongthap taking pictures with a Polaroid while wearing the new jerseys Atom got for them and that’s how the recap for My Love Mix-Up Episode 9 ends.

Episode 9 Review

With the recap for My Love Mix-Up Episode 9 out of the way, now it’s time for the review! This episode was, like most of the others, sweet and with tons of cute moments for our lead couple. Fourth and Gemini do a great job of showing how comfortable Kongthap and Atom are in their relationship now that some time has passed. There’s a lot of affection from both ends and the adorableness of it all makes the long, lingering scenes easier to forgive.

The arc about Atom’s fear of cooking did seem a bit out of the blue, particularly because I don’t recall him having much issue during the baking episode. It also seems like both parents are getting more involved now and while this adds a new dimension, I hope it doesn’t take away from the lightness of the story.

Mudmee and Half’s story isn’t quite as endearing as Kongthap and Atom’s, but perhaps now that they’re finally together, we can explore their characters in new ways rather than the will they-won’t they.
