The Fateful Day
Episode 9 of My Home Hero begins with Tetsuo recalling advice from his deceased father. Tetsuo shares information with Kyoichi about his parents and how they died. He says his father was a cop who liked mystery novels and cop shows. Tetsuo shares this with Kyoichi to help Kyoichi realize that he comes from a similar background. Kyoichi knows Tetsuo’s not lying because he searched his records before he met him. Kyoichi whips up a meal for them to eat.
While cooking, Kyoichi tells Tetsuo why he’s not interested in researching the yakuza responsible for his father’s demise. Tetsuo and Kyoichi share they are who they are now because of the people they’ve grown attached to after their respective family members’ deaths. Tetsuo asks Kyoichi if they can cover up his potential death as a suicide or accident to avoid Reika living a hateful life. Kyoichi doesn’t give Tetsuo a response, and the two eat the food Kyoichi preps up.
The final day arrives. Tetsuo and Kyoichi visit Takeda at his hideout. Kyoichi tells Takeda they were unsuccessful in finding Nobuto. Takeda confirms the Nobuto video was fake, but they couldn’t track the uploader down. Tetsuo heads to the restroom because the smoke in the room is hurting his lungs. One of Takeda’s men hands Tetsuo a mask when he exits. Takeda says Tetsuo can go home. Before he leaves, Tetsuo warns Kyoichi to keep his guard up. While Kyoichi’s lost in thought, Takeda receives news that startles him.
Takeda tells Tetsuo he needs to speak with him and orders his men to watch Kyoichi, angering him. Outside the hideout, Takeda asks Tetsuo what he discussed with Kyoichi because he received a strange email that’d change everything. Tetsuo shares intel with Takeda offscreen and says it’s all true. Takeda orders his people to check Nobuto’s room while Tetsuo returns to the hideout. Kyoichi asks Tetsuo what he told Takeda. He’s unsure who to trust, but Tetsuo says he’s not in cahoots with Takeda.
Meanwhile, Takeda’s men check Nobuto’s place and find a secret door embedded into his floor. The men report to Takeda. He returns inside to let everyone know they found a lot of cash in Nobuto’s secret area. Takeda says he’ll be sending men to search Kyoichi’s place because of the email he received about the armored car robbery. The emailer told him that Kyoichi and Nobuto were involved in it, so he questions if Kyoichi may have something to do with his disappearance. Kyoichi’s unaware that he might be getting framed, so he attacks Tetsuo. Takeda assaults Kyoichi and says he’ll explain everything on the car ride to his place.
Tetsuo and the others arrive and spot Kubo waiting at Kyoichi’s place. Kyoichi says he’d never kill Nobuto, but Kubo tells him to calm down. He teases Tetsuo and Kyoichi since one of the two will die tonight. In his apartment, Kubo asks Kyoichi to open his safe. Takeda orders his men to check Kyoichi’s cash serial numbers to see if they align with Nobuto’s stolen cash numbers. His men state none of the numbers line up, so the email may have been false. Kubo spots a strange bag in Kyoichi’s safe. Kyoichi’s shocked because he doesn’t know how that got in there.
Kyoichi grabs Takeda because he feels Takeda’s framing him for the murder based on what Tetsuo told him. Kubo tells his men to hold Kyoichi down. Kyoichi pleads for Tetsuo to let Kubo know that nothing was in the safe. Tetsuo says Kyoichi told him not to look when they arrived at his place for the first time. Takeda unloads the bag and finds a pile of bones. We see a young Kyoichi telling his mother that he hopes to open his father’s diner again to honor him. After receiving word from people he knows, Kubo realizes one of the bones is Nobuto’s.
Kubo approaches Kyoichi and says he caused irreparable damage to the organization’s relationship with Nobuto’s father, Matori. Kubo orders his men to take Kyoichi’s money, but Kyoichi pleads to let him hear him out. Kyoichi shares his side of the story with Kubo and says Takeda and Tetsuo are working together to frame him. Kyoichi tries coming up with ways they could’ve put the bag in his safe, but Kubo doesn’t believe it. Kubo orders Takeda to bring Kyoichi to Matori in a body bag. As Takeda and his men gag Kyoichi, Tetsuo tells the audience he set Kyoichi up.
We get a flashback showing us what Tetsuo told Takeda outside the hideout. He tells Takeda that he and Kyoichi went to Kyoichi’s apartment to search for items. He says Kyoichi believes Takeda’s trying to frame him for Nobuto’s murder and informs him about the safe in Kyoichi’s apartment. Then during his bathroom break, Tetsuo speaks with Kasen quietly and asks her if she retrieved the evidence bag she left in the ditch. He tells her he left a memo of instructions for her to complete and asks her to send the fake email about the armored car robbery. The episode closes with Kasen preparing to enter Kyoichi’s apartment through the roof to place the evidence bag inside Kyoichi’s safe.
The Episode Review
My Home Hero’s ninth episode might be its finest work yet. It gives viewers many questions to ponder over before the next chapter drops. Many of them are regarding Kyoichi’s safe and Kasen’s involvement with Tetsuo’s plan. There are many possible theories fans can come up with to explain how Tetsuo pulled off this master plan of his and I’m looking forward to receiving the true answer.
While it’s great Tetsuo and his family might be safe now, My Home Hero’s known for throwing curve balls at fans. It’s possible Kubo will want to murder Tetsuo because of his affiliation with their organization. It’d be foolish for them to keep him alive now that he knows a lot about their organization. However, it’s possible they’ll let Tetsuo off the hook because they assume Kyoichi killed Nobuto.
Whichever route it may go, I’m certain My Home Hero will figure out a way to make Tetsuo and his wife work harder to keep their family safe. Many folks will feel bad that Tetsuo threw Kyoichi under the bus. After learning about his past grievances with the yakuza and his father, fans may find it mean-spirited for Tetsuo to frame Kyoichi as the murderer.
Yet, Kyoichi has shown multiple times that he doesn’t trust Tetsuo, such as in the previous episode’s conclusion. Either way, it’s going to hurt to see Kyoichi’s mother’s reaction to all of this. Overall, this was a spectacular episode of My Home Hero. It shows how intelligent Tetsuo is as a person and gives us intel about his mother and father. I can’t wait to witness how Kasen pulled off her part of his plan and what lies ahead for Tetsuo and his family.
