My Home Hero – Season 1 Episode 3 Recap & Review

The Correct Path

Episode 3 of My Home Hero begins three days after Nobuto’s murder. Tetsuo visits someone and discusses how he’s been late for work. He’d get a drink with his person, but he has something he must complete first. The police are at Reika’s apartment complex while Tetsuo attempts to remove Nobuto’s odor from her bathroom. As he’s taping up newspapers to her wall, he spots a report about a father arrested for murder.

Kyoichi reports to Kubo about his findings regarding the police and Tetsuo’s conversation with his wife about a stalker. He used Reika’s friend Kana to confirm with Reika if she had a stalker and learned she didn’t. At the same time, Reika tells her mother about the incident. She feels the people following Reika may have discovered Tetsuo’s lie, so she plans to call Tetsuo.

Kyoichi asks if he can make a move on Tetsuo and his wife, but Kubo doesn’t accept. Later, some members of his group convince Kyoichi to go against Kubo’s wishes. This leads into the cliffhanger we received from the prior episode involving Tetsuo and his wife getting knocked out.

In an isolated location, Kyoichi pins Tetsuo to the ground. Tetsuo’s head is covered with a mask, and Kyoichi asks him about the stalker. He knows Tetsuo made it up and punches him consistently. Tetsuo refuses to admit the lie and conjures up a story involving the fake stalker. He tells Kyoichi he didn’t want to tell Reika about the stalker, so he hired a principal investigator named Suzuki to track the person down. This is the same name Tetsuo took on as the maid when Kyoichi entered that room in the prior episode. Nobuto’s father Matori calls Kyoichi, so he asks his men to hold Tetsuo down.

Matori tells Kyoichi that he plans to leave the organization if he doesn’t see Nobuto swiftly. Kyoichi’s worried because, without Matori’s assistance, the organization would dissolve. He orders his men to bring Tetsuo upstairs, and they place him near the edge of the roof. Kyoichi asks Tetsuo what he knows about his friend Nobuto, and Tetsuo asks him a question as a response. Kyoichi kicks him, but Tetsuo wasn’t on a roof. His legs were strapped by a rope-like contraption, and now he hangs upside down. Kyoichi continues pressuring Tetsuo about Nobuto, so he plans to make them believe his innocence with false information.

Kyoichi tells his men to check Tetsuo’s phone, and they find Suzuki’s email address on Tetsuo’s phone. Kyoichi’s men ask for Suzuki’s cell phone number, but Tetsuo says his company’s selling point is anonymity and privacy. He tells them they only communicate through email, but a henchman confirms Tetsuo has no message history with Suzuki. Tetsuo says his contract involves deleting all messages after they communicate. He tells Kyoichi and his goons that he can’t think straight because of his current predicament. Kyoichi slices Tetsuo’s face with a knife, while he plans to have his men interrogate Tetsuo’s wife to see if she shares the same sentiment as Tetsuo.

Tetsuo begs the men to let them all go if his wife (Tosu) confirms the information. Kyoichi confirms he spent a lot of expenditures on his family, so if he comes out with no leads to Nobuto’s disappearance, he’ll have Tetsuo’s family killed regardless of the info Tosu shares. Tetsuo realizes there was no correct answer and starts losing hope for his family.

Kyoichi calls Tosu, and her story adds up with Tetsuo’s. As a result, we receive a flashback of Tetsuo handing Tosu documents pertaining to their fake story about Suzuki. It appears they planned this out prior to getting captured by Kyoichi and his men.

These men ask Tosu about Nobuto, but this wasn’t on Tetsuo’s questionnaire. Pressured, Tosu conjures up a story about two cats and says she’d pray for their friends’ life. The men don’t want to continue this job due to being on a tight time limit, so they tell Kyoichi they’re wrapping up. The men worry the police may be arriving soon so Tosu tells the men that Suzuki saw someone making a scene at Reika’s apartment, but she doesn’t know what happened afterward.

The men with Tosu inform Kyoichi that they’ll make a report to Kubo and for Kyoichi to do as he pleases after this. Reika heads downstairs, and everything appears fine.

Kubo calls Kyoichi and tells him someone named Kaeda will be in charge of searching for Nobuto. Kyoichi frees Tetsuo and informs him that Tosu and Reika are safe. However, he must kill Tetsuo to persuade the higher-ups. Tetsuo realizes Kyoichi’s going through with this so he can survive. Tetsuo tries pleading with Kyoichi, but Kyoichi insists on killing him.

Tetsuo asks Kyoichi to work with him since he has information from Reika and Suzuki and can help him locate Nobuto. The episode concludes with an intense stare-down between both gentlemen.

The Episode Review

This chapter of My Home Hero had incredible tension, despite lacking in the visual department. Some scenes could have used better lighting and there were some sequences where the voice talent came across as slightly over-the-top. Regardless, this episode will leave many people on the edge of their seats and impressed by how intelligent Tetsuo and Tosu are as a duo.

I would have preferred seeing Tetsuo and his wife discuss their fake Suzuki story plans in real time before they were captured, though. Nonetheless, it was nice seeing them plan ahead. The chapter plays into Tetsuo’s fear and anguish well. From the scene involving him on the fictitious rooftops to his drowning in a pool of blood, those scenes captured his inner turmoil well.

The cliffhanger will leave fans speculating about what will happen in episode 4. Will Kyoichi accept Tetsuo’s offer or murder Tetsuo to save himself from death? Considering Kyoichi’s life might be in jeopardy, it makes sense for him to roll with Tetsuo if he hopes to discover more information about Nobuto’s disappearance.

Overall, this was a fine episode of My Home Hero. Some scenes may have felt too convenient and overdramatic, but it gets the job done in setting the tone and highlighting how horrifying it can be when you find yourself in a tight and dreadful spot. Hopefully, the series can continue delivering some exciting thrills and chills.
