Episode 7
Episode 7 of Mr. Plankton begins with a flashback of Hae-jo and Jae-mi watching a gangster film, during which Jae-mi says that if she were dying, she wouldn’t ask for a kiss; she would curse. In the present, that’s exactly what she does, bringing Hae-jo to tears.
Later, Jae-mi is rushed to the hospital. Heung spends days nursing her despite his mother’s disapproval when she discovers that Jae-mi hadn’t been pregnant. Meanwhile, Hae-jo, shocked and overcome with guilt, remains in bed, clutching Jae-mi’s shoe, at his landlady Bong-suk’s house, who is also his friend.
We later learn that Gi-ho and Heung had installed a GPS tracker on both their phones, which is how the police find the three on the deserted island. Days later, Jae-mi is taken to Heung’s house, although his mother forbids Heung to see her.
Back at Bong-suk’s house, Hae-jo is still moping in bed until Bong-suk pretends to throw away Jae-mi’s shoe to get him up. It’s revealed that Jae-mi had cherished the shoe since she’d saved it from being abandoned by everybody else, just like she and Hae-jo.
This is also when Hae-jo and Bong-suk’s story is revealed. After Hae-jo ran away from home, he’d been scrounging for food in dumpsters until he followed Bong-suk back to her house. She’d given him food for several days until she put him to work at her club. Eventually, he became everybody’s errand boy, which led him to open his own errand-running business.
Suddenly, while on their way, Hae-jo decides to go and see Jae-mi with Bong-suk. Elsewhere, Jae-mi wakes up and reveals the truth about her menopause to Heung’s mother, who’s completely against her relationship with Heung. Jae-mi agrees to leave but asks Heung’s mother to stop being harsh on her beloved son, whom she’d had after much struggle. She later meets Heung and tells him they need to end things.
Later, Hae-jo meets with Heung to give him Jae-mi’s shoe and is relieved to find that she’s okay. Heung realizes that he truly likes Jae-mi and later quietly leaves her shoes outside, weeping. The next day, Jae-mi leaves his house wearing the shoes and ends up at Hae-jo’s place, finding him half-naked around Bong-suk. She enters, and it seems like she kisses Hae-jo, but soon we realize that she’s actually bitten his nose!
The Episode Review
The ending scene was truly a major twist. What we thought was a touching reunion between Hae-jo and Jae-mi hilariously takes a turn when the camera reveals that Jae-mi, instead of kissing Hae-jo, is actually biting really hard on his nose! Such comedic sequences balance out the more somber moments in the show and the serious themes it portrays, giving us enough comic relief to digest it all.
In the meantime, it seems that Jae-mi and Heung have finally accepted their fate, even though Heung’s mother is worried about his well-being since he’s deeply in love with Jae-mi. The scene with Heung returning Jae-mi’s shoes, knowing she is going to leave, is telling and heartbreaking, recreating the scene in the second episode when Heung first gifted Jae-mi her shoes.
After all this wild ride, we wonder if we are finally nearing a sad ending, as there doesn’t seem to be any chance for Hae-jo to recover from his illness.
