Episode 6
Episode 6 of Mr. Plankton begins with a glimpse into Heung’s backstory and how he met Jae-mi. He’d been uncomfortable with every woman his mother introduced him to, as each one reminded him of his mother in some way. Then he met Jae-mi, who had just been kicked out of Heung’s mother’s cooking class. The two started dating, and Heung proposed after just two months.
Back in the present, Heung finally reunites with Jae-mi and embraces her, only wanting to take her home. However, they soon hear Hae-jo being pursued by gangsters, and chaos ensues. John steps in to protect Heung from the gangsters as the three escape on a boat headed to nowhere.
The three wake up on a deserted island without any cell service. Jae-mi tells Heung the truth about her menopause, and he’s relieved to know she didn’t leave him because of Hae-jo. While they’re stranded, Heung and Hae-jo engage in subtle competitions, vying for Jae-mi’s attention.
A flashback reveals that Hae-jo had spoken to the gangster boss while Jae-mi and Heung were talking. Despite explaining how the woman conned the boss, he still seeks revenge on Hae-jo for breaking his tooth during the escape, which led to the chase that ultimately brought them to the island.
On the island, Heung finds out that Hae-jo is Jae-mi’s ex-boyfriend, and the two end up bickering while fishing until Jae-mi arrives to scold them. Later, Heung drags Hae-jo along while he relieves himself in the wild, hoping to keep him away from Jae-mi.
This is when Hae-jo collapses with a seizure, and Heung tries to help him using acupuncture needles he carries. Hae-jo then opens up about his illness, and in a moment of vulnerability, asks if he can call Heung “hyung” (older brother). Though Heung refuses, there’s a newfound camaraderie between them. Still, Hae-jo tries to persuade Jae-mi to leave without Heung, but she refuses.
As Hae-jo wanders alone, he’s attacked by the gang boss. Heung and Jae-mi rush to his aid, but Jae-mi gets stabbed just as the police arrive in the distance.
The Episode Review
This episode had everything—action, comedy, and melodrama. There were several touching scenes that almost brought us to tears, especially when Hae-jo reveals his illness to Heung.
The two actors are such phenomenal artists that it’s impossible not to be moved by their performances. Woo Do-hwan’s expression when he calls Oh Jung-se’s Heung “hyung” is one of the most sincere and heartfelt moments in the series so far.
Hae-jo’s traumatic feelings of abandonment and isolation are unmistakable, as he accepts any form of affection with deep gratitude and emotion. This is conveyed in the single word, “hyung,” that he says to Heung.
Amidst these heartwarming scenes, the episode maintains its iconic sense of humor. Kim Hae-sook’s character, Ho-ja—Heung’s mother—praying to a specifically numbered ancestor to protect her grandchild is simply hilarious.
Overall, Mr. Plankton continues to be an unusual but perfect mix of romance, comedy, melodrama, and action!
