Let us know which movies you will be watching in the comments below.

Hypnotic (2023)

Release Date: September 1

Where To Watch: Peacock

Robert Rogriguez failed to hypnotise many critics into believing his latest movie was very good but if you haven’t yet seen it, you might still want to give this thriller a go for the twist-laden story and decent performances from its two leads, Ben Affleck and Alice Braga.

The mind-bending movie tells the story of Detective Danny Rourke (Affleck) who encounters a mysterious man named Lev Dellrayne (William Fichtner) who has the power to control minds. This leads him into a mystery surrounding his missing daughter and a secret government program that has links to trained hypnotist Diana Cruz (Braga).

The Little Mermaid (2023)

Release Date: September 6

Where To Watch: Disney+

Not every live-action remake of Disney’s animated classics has been worthwhile but The Little Mermaid is better than most. In our review of the film, we said “the human characters have a lot more depth than those in the original” and called it a “great one-time watch.” The weak special effects let the film down, however, so while it’s an entertaining movie, it does contain the CGI problems that marred some of the other Disney remakes. It’s still worth a watch though, especially for younger viewers.

Sitting In Bars With Cake (2023)

Release Date: September 8

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video

This new romantic movie based on the book by Audrey Shulman tells the story of Jane, a shy single woman who struggles to meet men. After baking a cake for a friend’s birthday, which she takes into a bar, she suddenly finds herself surrounded by guys. Is cake really the way to a man’s heart? It certainly seems that way, so Jane bakes more cakes in the hopes of finding her true love!

Yara Shahidi, Odessa A’zion, Bette Midler, Ron Livingston, Maia Mitchell, and Aaron Dominguez star in this baking-themed romcom.

Inside (2023)

Release Date: September 12

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video

In this psychological suspense thriller, Willem Dafoe stars as Nemo, a high-end art thief who becomes trapped in a New York penthouse after his heist doesn’t go as planned. Trapped in this impenetrable prison of glass and concrete, he must keep a clear head as he tries to figure out a way to escape from the inside.

A Million Miles Away (2023)

Release Date: September 15

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video

Based on the real-life story of NASA flight engineer José Hernández, this movie stars Michael Pena as a proud migrant farm worker who fulfills his wish of traveling into space after embarking on a decades-long journey from a rural village in Michoacán, Mexico, to the fields of San Joaquin Valley, to more than 200 miles above the Earth in the International Space Station.

Fast X (2023)

Release Date: September 15

Where To Watch: Peacock

In this penultimate entry in the long-running franchise, Dom (Vin Diesel) and his crew are up against Dante (Jason Momoa), the son of nefarious drug kingpin Hernan Reyes who was killed by Luke Hobbs (Dwyane Johnson) at the end of 2011’s Fast Five.

The grieving Dante has spent the last 12 years masterminding a plot to get his revenge – a mission of vengeance that involves Dom’s 8-year-old son. This is the catalyst for loads of over-the-top action scenes, including a heist sequence in Rome featuring a giant rolling bomb and a life-or-death street race involving Dom and Dante.

Love at First Sight (2023)

Release Date: September 15

Where To Watch: Netflix

Haley Lu Richardson and Ben Hardy star in this romantic drama about two young people who begin to fall for one another during a flight from New York to London. After losing sight of one another at the airport upon arrival, the chances of them finding each other again are seemingly impossible. Will they reunite? Hmm… you already know the answer!

Robots (2023)

Release Date: September 15

Where To Watch: Hulu

This future-set comedy stars Shailene Woodley and Jack Whitehall as two scam artists who use android doubles of themselves to avoid the time constraints of dating. When their robot replicas go on the run after falling in love and stealing their identities, they team up to track the lovestruck machines down.

Cassandro (2023)

Release Date: September 22

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video

This biographical movie follows the true story of Saúl Armendáriz, aka Cassandro, a gay amateur wrestler from El Paso who rose to international stardom.

Gael Garcia Bernal takes the lead role as the wrestler who triumphed in the macho world of Lucha Libre while embracing his true self.

Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant (2023)

Release Date: September 22

Where To Watch: Amazon Prime Video

It’s a bit of a risk putting Ritchie’s name in the title as his last two movies – Wrath of Man and Operation Fortune – weren’t particularly very good, in this writer’s opinion.

Fans of the director will want to watch this movie anyway though they may be disappointed it’s not another crime comedy about not-very-nice people doing not-very-nice things to one another! This is a serious-minded war movie about US Army Sergeant John Kinley (Jake Gyllenhaal) who returns to the war zone to rescue the Afghan interpreter (Dar Salim) that once saved his life.

No One Will Save You (2023)

Release Date: September 22

Where To Watch: Hulu

This new sci-fi movie from Love and Monsters writer Brian Duffield centres on Brynn, an anxiety-ridden young woman, who has something new to worry about when her home is invaded by alien intruders. What follows is an action-packed face-off between Brynn and these extraterrestrial beings.

Spy Kids: Armageddon (2023)

Release Date: September 22

Where To Watch: Netflix

Zachary Levi (Shazam) stars in this new instalment in the Spy Kids franchise from director Robert Rodriguez. The last entry in the series – Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World – was less than spectacular, so here’s hoping this movie, which details the adventures of two new junior spies, lives up to the entertaining original.

The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster (2023)

Release Date: September 22

Where To Watch: Shudder

Inspired by Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, this fantasy horror stars Layla DeLeon Hayes (The Equalizer) as Vicaria, a brilliant teenager who tries to bring her dead brother back to life after he is violently murdered. What could possibly go wrong?

Flora and Son (2023)

Release Date: September 29

Where To Watch: Apple TV+

Irish director John Carney has a fascination with music and song, as evidenced by his previous movies – Once, Begin Again, and Sing Street. His latest movie follows a similar beat, telling the story of Flora (Eva Hewson), a struggling single mom, who sees music as a way to keep her rebellious son Max (Orén Kinlan) out of trouble.

This touching tale has scored highly with critics so is definitely worth a look, be that on Apple’s streaming service or at the cinema, when it gets a big screen release a week before its streaming debut.
