Christmas is almost here so if you’re looking for a movie or two to watch after you have tucked into your turkey dinner (vegetarian options are also available) then you might want to consider the cinematic treats that are landing on our streaming services.
Highlights this month include Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny on Disney+, Spider-Man: Across The Spiderverse on Now TV, and Rebel Moon Part 1 on Netflix.

Candy Cane Lane (2023)

There are lots of festive movies landing on Amazon’s streaming service this Christmas, including this new comedy film starring Eddie Murphy as a man who is determined to win his neighbourhood’s annual Christmas decorating contest.
The premise is similar to the Matthew Broderick/Danny DeVito comedy Deck The Halls but don’t expect another copycat movie. In this latest release, Murphy’s character calls on a mischievous elf for help, which backfires when the elf casts a spell to bring the 12 days of Christmas to life. Chaos ensues!
Genie (2023)

In this new festive movie, a workaholic man (Paapa Essiedu) enlists the aid of a magical genie (Melissa McCarthy) to help him win back his family before Christmas. Critics haven’t been overly kind about this one but if your wish is to watch a fairy tale-style comedy with your own family this holiday season, this might still be worth a watch if you can lower your expectations.
It’s A Wonderful Knife (2023)

Not to be confused with It’s A Wonderful Life, the festive family classic that many of us watch during the Christmas holidays, this spin on that James Stewart favourite centres on a young woman who has to reckon with a serial killer and not a wisdom-spouting angel!
The movie tells the story of Winnie Carruthers who, a year after saving her town from a psychotic killer on Christmas Eve, wishes she had never been born. She gets her wish and ends up in a parallel universe where the killer makes a return.
The Naughty Nine (2023)

Have your kids been misbehaving? If so, you might want to sit them down in front of this festive film about a group of young people who have been put on Santa’s naughty list. Here’s hoping the characters in this movie (and your own younglings) learn the error of their ways!
Theater Camp (2023)

Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) and Molly Gordon (The Bear) are among the cast of this critically acclaimed comedy that focuses on the eccentric staff of a rundown theatre camp in New York and their efforts to keep the camp going in the face of financial ruin.
Leave The World Behind (2023)

A family’s vacation at a luxurious rental home takes a downward turn when a cyberattack knocks out their devices and two strangers turn up at their door. “There’s no going back to normal” reads the tagline of this intriguing thriller from Mr. Robot director Sam Esmail.
Julia Roberts, Ethan Hawke, Mahershala Ali, and Myha’la Herrold star as the two couples forced to live together when the world around them changes.
May December (2023)

This latest comedy-drama from Todd Haynes (Far From Heaven) stars Natalie Portman and Chris Tenzis as a married couple who buckle under pressure when an actress arrives at their home to do research on their past.

The Sacrifice Game (2023)

If you’re going to play a game over the Christmas holidays, you should probably stick to Monopoly or Buckaroo, and not a game that could potentially summon a demon!
In this 70s’ set chiller, two boarding students who stay behind at their school during Christmas break, are forced into a fight for their lives when a group of devil cultists turn up on their doorsteps intent on playing the titular game.
Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023)

Set seven years after the events of Bumblebee, this latest instalment in the franchise takes place in 1994 and follows Noah, an electronics expert, and Elena, an artefact researcher, who find themselves caught in the middle of the Ancient War between the various Transformer factions. These include the Maximals, descendants of the Autobots that can transform into mechanised beasts.

Your Christmas Or Mine 2 (2023)

After inadvertently swapping Christmases in Your Christmas Or Mine, Hayley (Cora Kirk) and James (Asa Butterfield) are involved in another festive calamity when there is a transport mixup at the airport.
The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry (2023)

Based on the 2012 novel of the same name, this British drama film stars Jim Broadbent as Harold Fry, a retired pensioner who decides to walk the length of England to reach Berwick-Upon-Tweed to be with his dying friend.
Chicken Run: Dawn Of The Nugget (2023)

The chickens may have escaped from Tweedy’s farm but that doesn’t mean all of their troubles are over. In this zany comedy sequel, Ginger and her flock live on a peaceful island sanctuary but the rest of chicken-kind on the mainland are having a less than cracking time as a new and terrible threat bears down on them. Will Ginger and her team be able to help?

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods (2023)

Billy Batson and his fellow foster kids are still trying to get to grips with their superpowers when a vengeful trio of ancient gods arrives on Earth in search of a magical stone that was taken from them years before.
This sequel to 2019’s Shazm isn’t quite as fresh and funny as that film but it’s still an entertaining comic book flick with lots of action-packed spectacle.
The Family Plan (2023)

In this new action-comedy, Mark Wahlberg stars as a former assassin living incognito as a suburban dad. But when his past catches up with him, he must go on the run with his family in tow! Michelle Monaghan, Ciaran Hinds, and Maggie Q also star in this movie from director Simon Cellan Jones (The Diplomat).
Finestkind (2023)

Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (2023)

A short while ago, in a galaxy not too far away, a talented director named Zack Snyder was all set to direct a Star Wars movie. That never happened, of course, so he decided to create a sci-fi epic of his own!
This star-trotting epic is about Kora (Sofia Boutella), a lone-wolf soldier who becomes a farming village’s best hope for survival when an interstellar royal empire, bent on controlling the galaxy, threatens the existence of this peaceful community.
Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse (2023)

After reuniting with Gwen Stacey, the new boy in the Spider-suit, Mile Morales, is catapulted across the Multiverse where he meets the Spider Society, a team of Spider-people that don’t see eye to eye with our young hero.
This movie is as visually stunning as the first Spider-Verse installment with plenty of breathtaking action and lots of hilarious scenes. It’s a tad overlong but if you’re a Spidey fan, you probably won’t care about the extended running time.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

Don’t worry – this isn’t the Bob-Hoskins 1993 bomb that has gone down as one of the worst video game adaptations of all time! This is the recent animated feature that proved it wasn’t game-over for video game movies! All the characters you know and love from the classic game franchise are here, including Mario (Chris Pratt), Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), and Luigi (Charlie Day).
The plot follows Mario, Princess Peach, and an anthropomorphic mushroom named Toad as they travel through the Mushroom Kingdom to save the world from the ruthless fire-breathing Koopa known as Bowser.

Polite Society (2023)
