Will there be an Uncharted 2? Here’s what we know about a movie sequel:

Uncharted 2

If you’re a fan of the Uncharted video game series or the 2022 action-adventure movie that served as a prequel to the game titles, you might be interested in a follow-up movie. You might also want to see a sequel if you’re a fan of Tom Holland, the young actor who played the movie’s main hero, Nathan Drake.

But will there be an Uncharted 2? Or is it game over for this potential franchise? Here’s what we know:

What is Uncharted about?

In this prequel movie, we get to meet the street-smart Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) before he becomes the legendary treasure hunter from Naughty Dog’s game franchise. This isn’t to say he doesn’t hunt for any treasure in this movie, however. He is recruited by Victor ‘Sully’ Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg), his friend and mentor from the game series, to locate the 500-year-old lost fortune that was amassed by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Thus begins his first adventure with Sully and his first globe-trotting mission.

Unfortunately, Nathan’s already difficult mission is made even harder by the ruthless Santiago Moncada (Antonio Banderas) who is also on the hunt for the treasure. Nathan races around the globe to get the treasure before Moncada gets his hands on it but further complications arise for our hero when the double-crossing fortune hunter, Chloe Frazer (Sophia Ali), also arrives on the scene.

Does Nathan find the treasure?

Well, there will be no spoilers here. But if you would like to know more about the first Uncharted movie, check out our review and Ending Explained article.

Will there be an Uncharted 2?

At the time of writing, Uncharted 2 has not been confirmed.

The chances of a sequel usually depend on the involvement of the main cast and crew, the critical reviews, and box office numbers.

In terms of reviews, the critical reception was mixed. We gave the movie 7 out of 10 and stated that it was entertaining and faithful to the source material. Other reviewers were less than positive but many still agreed that it was one of the better video game adaptations in existence.

Despite the varied critical response, the movie did do well at the box office. It has a worldwide gross of over $400 million which is good numbers for a movie with a $120 million budget.

Due to these high numbers, a sequel is likely. But as we said, this depends on the cast and crew. Are they interested in coming back for more?

Mark Wahlberg is open to the idea, according to Newsweek, but there are conditions. In an interview, Wahlberg said:

“If the [Uncharted] fans really love the movie and they want another one, and there is that demand. And [if] we can make it better than the first, then I would.”

But what about Tom Holland? He’s a fan of the games so it could be assumed that he would love to sign on for more Uncharted movies. However, he wasn’t completely pleased about his performance in the first movie, according to his interview with GQ, and there is the suggestion that he might not return to the role of Drake. He said:

“As soon as you start worrying about ‘Do I look good in this shot?’ acting becomes something other than playing a character. I think there are elements of my performance in Uncharted where I kind of fell under that spell of being ‘I want to look good now. I want this to be my cool moment.’ I had to play this very tough, very stoic guy – basically be Mark Wahlberg. My character is supposed to be a f….g action hero in this moment!

Look, I haven’t seen it, so I don’t know if I succeeded in that. But it was an important lesson learned, because, at times, it was less about land a mark and go through this scene and more about land a mark, stand like this and see my bulging biceps… It was a mistake and is something that I will probably never do again.”

Of course, Holland might be more interested in returning to the role if he can bring more depth to the character (beyond simply looking strong and cool) but for now, we can only hope that he might make a comeback if the right circumstances align.

What could Uncharted 2 be about?

The first movie ended on a cliffhanger involving Nate’s long-missing brother so we suspect a reunion between the two would be part of the plot of the sequel. There is also the chance that Uncharted 2 could follow the narrative of one of the sequels from Sony’s gaming franchise. The first movie included scenes that game fans will recognize from the series but it wasn’t based on any one title.

This is just speculation as without confirmation of a sequel, we are, quite literally, in uncharted territory. But if you’re a fan of the games, you will likely know more about potential plot points than movie viewers who aren’t familiar with the Playstation titles.

Who could be in Uncharted 2?

Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg will hopefully return as Nate and Sully if a sequel is greenlit and there is the chance that Sophia Ali could return as Chloe too. You shouldn’t expect to see Antonio Banderas back in the sequel or Tati Gabrielle who played his double-crossing merc but in case you haven’t seen the movie, we won’t explain the reasons why here.

When could Unchartered 2 be released?

As a sequel hasn’t been confirmed, it is hard to say at this point. The first movie had a lengthy journey to the big screen due to director and writer changes and the inevitable problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. We hope Uncharted 2 doesn’t suffer the same delays but as Tom Holland has recently hinted at an acting break, it might still be some time before we get to see a sequel.

That’s all we know for now but if news of a sequel does emerge, we aim to update this page with new information.

  1. Hi Dee, thanks for your feedback and thank you for spotting the error in the article. You’re right by reminding me Magellan’s first name was Ferdinand. I likely knew this when I wrote the article (it was a while ago now) but I likely had Francis Drake on my mind at the time, due to his mention in the film, so made a typo. I have to say that I do take pride in my work but mistakes do happen, as frustrating at that can be. These aren’t always noticed which is why its helpful when good people like yourself can let us know when a mistake has been made.

    Thanks again

  2. Message to Lee:
I was VERY surprised to get an actual answer (reaction?) to my commentary on “Uncharted”. However, I would not have even seen it had I not been a journalism teacher many years ago and found myself thinking back to your article (I guess it was you who wrote it) and feeling upset (?) maybe frustrated(?) or maybe disappointed (?) that someone who writes articles that MANY people read online would not check the facts he wrote. I know it’s probably “nut-picky” –but I learned many years ago–probably as early as elementary school days that Sir FRANCIS Drake was a pirate (though he called himself something more legitimate) for England. Nate and Sam, supposedly, are his ancestors. It was FERDINAND Magellan who sailed for Portugal and was acclaimed for having circumvented the globe–not FRANCIS Magellan. Sorry for being a frustrated ex-teacher–but it has bothered me all day since I read your article. I feel, though, that anyone who writes something to be read by thousands of people (?) should have more pride in his work and check facts. Do you feel thoroughly chastised now? Please take this as a critique meant to guide you in future endeavors — not as a slap on the hand. Thank you for reading this. (BTW–This is NOT a repeat comment!)

  3. Thanks for getting in touch Dee. There is no official word of a sequel yet but there are rumours it might happen. Fingers crossed!

  4. I am an 80 year-old widow who loves action movies–and I especially like Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. PLEASE do a sequel to “Uncharted”. I read that Mr. Holland wasn’t very happy with his performance in the first film–well I WAS! I received the first film on DVD yesterday and am getting ready to watch it for the second time today. If you can enchant even a senior citizen –it’s gotta be an excellent film. Right?

  5. Please do Uncharted 2, and don’t leave us hanging with the ending of the first movie. It’s a great film! Very entertaining. All the actors were wonderful!

  6. Not familiar with the game, thought the movie was good. A sequel would be nice. He needs to rescue Sam after all.

  7. I think it’s time to bring Alana Fischer to the next movie drake’s future wife, I’ve played all the uncharted games and you have chosen the best 2 actors to play Drake and sully I would say let’s step it up to the next level and add Alana to the mix now

  8. A sequel would be great to see a movie like this lately it was a treat. Mark and Tom were great actors together and I think they have to make a sequel so Tom finds his brother.

  9. A second movie would be great as others have already said the two of them (Tom and Mark) work great together have seen a lot of marks moves. I don’t think I have seen Tom’s moves but in this one he was great. I well be looking for some of his other movie’s cause of his preformed in this one

  10. This was a very entertaining action comedy with a lot of twists and turns. We hope there is a sequel because to leave the ending open like that without followup is damaging to the franchise in my opinion. Historically feanchises that ledt the cliffhanger at the end to say the story is not done and then walk away makes me feel cheated and disenchanted. Uncharted 2 is a must!

  11. Just finished Uncharted and really hope there’s a sequel. I didn’t know until just now that it was based on a video game. Very entertaining and both leads were great! Sequel please!!!

  12. I really enjoyed the movie, very entertaining. Both Mark and Tom played good roles and made a good team. Make another sequel I’m sure it will be just as great as the first one.

  13. I recently watched the movie and loved it! I actually found myself watching it a second time just to pick up on things that I missed the first time. It’s so good! At the end it lead you to believe there will be another one. Please don’t disappoint and lead us on. Please actors that played in the first one please play in the second one. Yes definitely please do a second uncharted!!!

  14. Would love to see a sequel, enjoyable movie. Know nothing of the games but the movie was pure entertainment.

  15. If one of the better fun movies out of Hollywood lately would love to see a sequel good clean fun, Something that seems rare in Hollywood no political overtones loved it

  16. I would like to see an Uncharted 2 so Nate could hopefully see his brother again and hunt treasure together with Sully and Cloe all around the 1st movie was awesome and hilarious 😂 seriously I would think the 2nd movie could be just as good if not better I seriously think yall should make a sequel especially since Sam was there at the end of the movie to find out he really is still alive.

  17. Hopefully Sony releases more Uncharted Movie deleted scenes, since most of them so far have been really good, e.g The Unreleased Deleted Nate + Chloe kiss scene from CHP 18 of the Movie Novelization + seen by a test audience. Please Tweet Sony to release them or an extended cut.

  18. Just watched the movie on Netflix. Daughter and some watched in the theater and HIGHLY recommended it. IT WAS FREAKIN’ AWESOME!!!

Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg were a great combo! They flowed so well in their characters and the action parts…INCREDIBLE!!!

DEFINITELY looking for a sequel!!! Come on Tom, jump in with Mark…PLEASE don’t leave us hanging…especially with the extra, intriguing endings!!!!

  19. Uncharted brought a mix of Indiana Jones, national treasure, lara croft and the goonies in one film. A sequel would be great and should be made. I like others no zero about the games and though the movie was excellent.

  20. I would love to see a sequel, Uncharted was very entertaining to me, I like both the main actors in this movie and would love to see them perform together again.
