Ron Howard’s latest movie Thirteen Lives recently landed on Amazon’s streaming service after a limited theatrical release. Reviews have been strong for this biographical survival film and this has led to speculation about a follow-up.
But will there be a sequel to Thirteen Lives? Here’s what we know.

What is Thirteen Lives about?
Thirteen Lives tells the story of the international rescue attempt that was actioned when a junior football team and their coach became trapped in the Tham Luang caves after an unseasonal bout of heavy rainfall caused massive flooding.
The movie largely focuses on two British cave divers, Richard Stanton and John Volanthen, who were called in to help with the rescue due to their cave diving skills. But while a good proportion of the running time is centred around their rescue efforts, the movie also highlights the other people who helped with the mission, including the Royal Thai Navy SEALs who took part in the dive, and the many volunteers who helped to pump water out of the caves.
The rescue mission was successful as Richard, John, and the other members of their team managed to get the football team out of the caves alive. It was a mission fraught with danger, not least because of the rising flood waters, so the men who risked their lives to save the boys and their coach deserve to be hailed as heroes.

Will there be a Thirteen Lives 2?
At the time of writing, there is no confirmation of a Thirteen Lives 2.
This is of little surprise as the first movie didn’t end on a cliffhanger. The boys and their coach were saved at the end of the movie so a sequel would be very unlikely.
If there were to be a sequel, the focus could be on the cave divers from the first movie. It could centre on their lives after the 2018 rescue mission, perhaps with a look at how their lives were impacted by the cave rescue. The sequel could also focus on the football team and their families and how their lives progressed after being rescued.
This is speculation as we really think a sequel is unlikely. But if you do want to know more about the cave rescue, a new documentary about the mission will be released on Netflix this September. You can read more about this here.
Who could be in Thirteen Lives 2?
If a sequel was given the green light, Colin Farrell and Viggo Mortensen could return as the brave cave divers from the first movie. The cast could also include Joel Edgerton, Tom Bateman, and the other actors who portrayed the members of the crew that saved the football team from drowning.
This is assuming the movie follows their lives after the rescue mission but if it focuses on the thirteen lives that were saved, we could see the return of the young cast members who portrayed the various members of the stranded football team.
When could Thirteen Lives 2 be released?
As the likelihood of a sequel is slim, you shouldn’t expect to hear news of a sequel or a release date any time soon.
