Will there be a Scrooge: A Christmas Carol 2? Here’s what we know:

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol 2

Christmas time is here again and with it comes a new adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic story, A Christmas Carol. Currently streaming on Netflix, this animated version of the author’s moralistic tale features a great voice cast, including Luke Evans as Ebenezer Scrooge, Jonathan Pryce as the spirit of Jacob Marley, and Olivia Colman as the Ghost of Christmas Past.

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol doesn’t do a lot to deviate from the original story – which will be either a good or a bad thing, depending on your point of view – but thanks to the voicework and imaginative animation, it is still worth a watch, even if you know how the tale concludes.

If you have seen and enjoyed Netflix’s new movie, you might be interested in a sequel. But will Scrooge be part of our Christmas Future? Here’s what we know at the time of writing.

What is Scrooge: A Christmas Carol about?

As in the previous adaptations of  A Christmas Carol, the movie tells the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a grumpy old moneylender who hates Christmas!

One cold Christmas Eve, Scrooge is visited at home by the ghost of his dead business partner Jacob Marley, who has been forced to wander the afterlife in chains. Marley warns Scrooge that he will share the same fate unless he changes his ways. Scrooge is disbelieving of this at first but when he is visited by three other ghosts who teach him some valuable life lessons, he begins to realise how his miserly behaviour has affected the people around him.

At the end of the story, he is relieved to hear that he still has time to change and so does what he can to make amends with the family and townsfolk that he had badly treated.

Will there be a sequel to Scrooge: A Christmas Carol?

A sequel to Scrooge: A Christmas Carol is very unlikely. Charles Dickens never wrote a follow-up novel featuring Scrooge, Bob Cratchit, Tiny Tim, or any of the other characters from his original tale so you shouldn’t expect Netflix to greenlight a sequel movie.

This isn’t to say there aren’t any sequels to A Christmas Carol in existence, as several people have created their own works of fiction inspired by Dickens’ novel, including Matt McHugh who wrote a short story entitled Scrooge and Cratchit.

It is unlikely that any of these will become the basis for another Netflix movie, however, but you could always check out their stories if you want a continuation of Scrooge’s story.

What could Scrooge: A Christmas Carol 2 be about?

The sequel could see Scrooge return to his miserly ways if another series of events caused him to hate Christmas. Or the ghost of Scrooge could visit another character, perhaps the grown-up Tiny Tim, if they need a reminder of the importance of generosity and compassion at Christmas time.

These are just speculations as we don’t think a sequel will happen but if you have any story ideas of your own, please let us know by leaving us a comment below.

When could Scrooge: A Christmas Carol 2 be released?

A sequel could be released in December 2023 if Netflix decides to make it but we’re more likely to see another reimagining of A Christmas Carol land on our streaming services instead of a follow-up movie.

Should the Ghost of Christmas Future visit us with news of a sequel, we will let you know. But for now, you should assume that a continuation of Scrooge: A Christmas Carol is unlikely to happen.

  1. Come on, team members of fans who already watched the first film Scrooge A Christmas Carol
You ready for another film that I’ve been waiting for called “Scrooge : A Christmas Carol 2” starring Luke Evans and Olivia Colman. You’ve know that when Ebeneezer Scrooge passed away, he will return for another christmas and fix everything.

  2. I would love to see Ebenezer rekindle his romance with Alice, who helps the poor in the Alistair Simm version.
It could be a hallmark movie or 8 episode series on Netflix.
How about Marleys redemption character arc …?

  3. Hey, thanks for getting in touch. We aren’t sure what we can do to help you prepare the movie but we would love to hear all of your sequel ideas.

  7. Sure, I like to see a grand exciting sequel of Scrooge : A Christmas Carol 2.
It will be starring Luke Evans, Brenda Song, Anna Akana, Hailey Tiju, Sarah Nicolas Lane, Mae Whiteman, Chloe Lang and also some of our favourite old voices like Anne Hathaway, Lena Pendora and Michael Douglas.
This will be the exciting most amazing movie that I will be seeing in the past, present and future since Mr Scrooge saw them. And also it includes some of your old and new songs from the movie that you will be hearing.

  8. Hey Matt, you’re very welcome. I haven’t had the opportunity to read your story yet but I hope the link I provided in the article generates interest in your book. It’s a surprise to me that a sequel has never been put on screen. There are over 40 adaptations of Dickens’s work apparently but no continuations of the story. As you say, maybe someday! Anyway, thanks for getting in touch. I hope all is well with you.

  9. Thanks for mentioning my story.

I, for one, am kind of surprised there has not yet been any cinematic continuation of Dickens’ tale. Every few years, some studio re-makes “Christmas Carol” but none has seen fit to attempt a sequel. Seems to me a logical way to attract an audience with something familiar-but-different. Maybe someday.
