Matriarch 2
Matriarch, currently streaming on Disney+ in the UK and Hulu in the US, is a folk horror tale that is not for the squeamish. If you are averse to scenes of violence and weird sex and have a phobia of worms, this probably isn’t a movie for you. But if you have seen the movie and enjoyed it, despite the rather bizarre goings-on, you might be interested in a sequel.
But will there be a Matriarch 2? Or will we need to turn elsewhere for our next dose of creepy British horror? Here’s what we know at the time of writing:
What is Matriarch about?
The movie focuses on a self-destructive young woman called Laura who returns to the village of her childhood to be with Celia, her mother. It’s clear from Laura’s initial arrival home that the relationship between the two women is fractured. This is presumably because of the emotional neglect that Laura suffered as a child and the resentment she still has towards the woman that she moved away from 20 years previously.
Rather than fleeing from her mom a second time, Laura decides to stick around. But the longer she remains in the village, the more traumatic her stay becomes, as it soon becomes clear that her mother, and the people of the village, are under the spell of some kind of monstrous force.

Will there be a Matriarch 2?
At the time of writing, a sequel to Matriarch has not been announced. It’s unlikely that there will be a follow-up as, despite the rather strange and abstract ending, the movie appears to be a standalone piece and not the forerunner of further chapters.
Therefore, we think a sequel to Matriarch is unlikely. As the movie hasn’t had many strong reviews, this is another reason why a follow-up movie isn’t likely to happen.
What could happen in Matriarch 2?
Should there be a sequel, it will likely focus on a new arrival at the village trying to overcome the mysterious force that has taken residence outside of Laura’s childhood home.
Alternatively, we could see a prequel, as there is scope for a story about Celia and her late husband and how the problems in their relationship brought about the arrival of the ‘matriarch’ that the villagers became beholden to.

When could Matriarch 2 be released?
If a second movie is given the green light, there is a chance that it could arrive next year, perhaps around Halloween time to scare the pants off moviegoers.
But as we think Matriarch 2 is unlikely, you shouldn’t get your hopes up if you’re waiting for news of a sequel/prequel.
