Desperado 4
Robert Rodriguez directed every movie in the El Mariachi trilogy, and it stars Antonio Banderas as the gunslinging musician in Desperado and Once Upon A Time in Mexico, with Carlos Gallardo playing the titular character in the original El Mariachi in 1992. Desperado was a massive success, putting Rodriguez on the Hollywood A list of directors and leading to more high profile projects. But will there be a Desperado 4? Or do we have to settle for this one being an action trilogy? Here’s what we know at the time of writing:
What is Desperado about?
El Mariachi is a musician and gunslinger who arrives in a small Mexican border town after being away for a long time. His past catches up with him, and he soon gets caught up in a feud with the local drug kingpin and his gang. Desperado is actually a sequel to Robert Rodriguez debut movie, El Mariachi, but very much acts as a standalone piece. There was a sequel to Desperado called Once Upon A Time In Mexico that sees El Mariachi getting involved in international espionage involving a psychotic CIA agent and a corrupt Mexican general.
Will there be a sequel to Desperado?
No, Desperado 4 won’t happen for a very straightforward reason: the story has already been told. The original trilogy was regarded as an entirely self-contained, stand-alone narrative.
What could Desperado 4 be about?
Despite a sequel being very unlikely, in theory, a sequel could bring El Mariachi back for another round of carnage, in a story set 20+ years later. However, the trilogy was a satisfying story that doesn’t need adding to.
When could Desperado 4 be released?
The sequel would have at least been discussed if it were in the works. However, since there is currently no information regarding Desperado 4, it is best to avoid getting your hopes up, as the likelihood of one is extremely low.
