The Velveteen Rabbit 2
Currently streaming on Apple TV+ is The Velveteen Rabbit, an adaptation of the children’s novel written by Margery Williams.
On the surface, the film is about the friendship between a boy named William and a toy rabbit who miraculously comes to life. But look beneath the surface and you will discover a story with hidden messages about self-acceptance, unconditional love, and the courage to deal with change.
If you have seen and enjoyed The Velveteen Rabbit, you might be interested in a sequel.
But will there be another movie about William and his stuffed rabbit? Here’s what we know:
What is The Velveteen Rabbit about?
The story is centred around a boy named William who receives a stuffed Velveteen rabbit on Christmas Day. The rabbit does much to cheer up William, who is feeling sad after saying goodbye to his friends and moving to a new home.
Miraculously, his toy bunny comes to life. Or at least that’s what seems to happen as the story plays out. As we watch them have adventures together, the lives of them both are transformed in ways that are both heartbreaking and heartwarming.
We won’t give away any major plot points here but if you would like to know more about The Velveteen Rabbit, check out our Ending Explained article for a recap of the film’s story.
Will there be a sequel to The Velveteen Rabbit?
At the time of writing, a sequel to The Velveteen Rabbit has not been announced.
Generally, Apple TV+, like other cable networks and streamers, gauge numerous metrics before renewing a show or a movie, including how many people initially watch it and then looking at the drop-off rate. With some of a streamer’s content, cancellations or renewals happen quickly (ala. Squid Game, Bridgerton, Red Notice etc.) Other times, it can take months before a streamer like Apple TV+ decides on a sequel’s future.
The opinion of movie critics can also determine whether a sequel is given the green light.
As The Velveteen Rabbit has only just been released (at the time of writing), it’s too early to report on viewing figures for the movie. But as the film has been well-received by some critics, there’s a chance a sequel could be given the green light. That being said, the original book’s author didn’t write a follow-up novel but another writer, Jennifer Greenway, came up with a second story in the form of A Real Little Bunny. This could become the basis of another film if Apple TV+ decide to create a sequel.
What could happen in The Velveteen Rabbit 2?
The synopsis to Greenway’s sequel book is as follows:
“After he becomes Real and goes to live with the other wild rabbits in the woods, the velveteen rabbit returns to visit the boy who used to own him and meets the new toy rabbit that has taken his place.”
If Apple TV+ create a second film, they could use the above plotline as the basis for the story. To be honest though, we personally think a sequel is unlikely to happen. But if we do hear news of a follow-up movie, we will update this page accordingly.
