Will there be a Midsommar 2? Here’s what we know about a sequel:

Midsommar 2

When making your summer plans, you probably want to think twice before attending a Swedish folk festival that takes place on the summer solstice. This isn’t to say you’ll be in for a dreadful time, but if your experience is anything compared to the protagonists of Ari Aster’s Midsommar, you’ll likely regret your decision to forego your usual beach vacation!

Released in 2019, Midsommar starred Florence Pugh and Jack Reynor as a dysfunctional married couple who found themselves in the clutches of a sinister cult after arriving at a midsummer festival.

The movie was a worthy follow-up to Hereditary, Aster’s dark and disturbing psychological horror about one family’s deterioration after the death of their secretive matriarch.

Hereditary didn’t receive a sequel, although the director did suggest he had an idea in mind for a follow-up movie (source). But what about Midsommar 2? Is a sequel likely? Here’s what we know.

What is Midsommar about?

Midsommar is a chilling folk horror film about a group of students who travel to a pagan festival in Sweden. Among the group are Dani and Christian, who attend the festival together, despite the problems that exist within their relationship.

The two have bigger things to worry about than their ailing love life when they start to realize something is ‘off’ about the community of worshippers that welcome them. Strange rituals, one of which includes a suicide, and a series of other bizarre happenings, indicate that all is not going to end well for this struggling couple.

As the film progresses, the students begin to disappear, one by one, and near the end of Aster’s dark tale, we discover their terrible fates.

We aren’t going to reveal anything more about the plot just in case you haven’t seen the film yet. But if you’re a fan of the director’s previous works, including Hererditary and the recent Beau Is Afraid, we wholeheartedly recommend Midsommar to you.

Will there be a Midsommar 2?

At the time of writing, a sequel to Midsommar has not been announced. You shouldn’t expect a sequel either as there is no indication online to suggest Aster is interested in making a follow-up to his movie.

While the film ends in a way that doesn’t completely conclude the story that has been told, we suspect Aster wants his audience to imagine what might happen next instead of giving them a definitive answer.

Of course, if Midsommar 2 ever does get the green light, we will update this page with the relevant information.

What could happen in Midsommar 2?

If there is a sequel, it would likely focus on Dani who managed to make it to the end of Midsommar without being sacrificed to a pagan god. We won’t tell you what happens to her (for fear of giving away a major spoiler), but it’s clear that her story isn’t over at the end of the film.

We would likely find out what happened to her after the final ritual and whether or not she decided to leave the cult that tried to imprison her. Alternatively, the sequel could be about Sweden’s winter solstice, with the same setting but a new group of characters falling into the hands of a paganistic cult.

This is just speculation as we really don’t think a sequel will happen. But if you have any ideas of your own for Midsommar 2, please let us know by leaving a comment below.

  1. I loved Dani, the actress who played her was so amazing at bringing this character to life even tho she went through so much as a character. I feel like there’s a few different ways they could make another film. I really hope they could with Dani.

  2. Genuinely one of my favourite movies of all time, tense, gripping, clever, psychologically horrific, as well as some brutal and gory moments too. It’s an all-round 10/10 for me, and I’m looking forward to watching the extended version soon. Would love there to be a no.2 that shows Dani being a leader in the pagan pack, and see newcomers potentially come in, maybe she’d have a change of heart part way through and the rest would find out, as she tries to help the newcomers? Either way, I’d be very excited to see it get announced, but similar to yourself, I don’t see it ever happening.
