Will there be a John Wick 5? Here’s what we know about a sequel:

John Wick 5

John Wick is arguably the most dominant action franchise in modern times. The Keanu Reeves-led movies have revived the genre and inspired many chic and intense action films as well. The singular focus on curating and choreographing action sequences involved audiences like never before. John Wick’s brand identity was built on prioritizing fight scenes and gun battles over narrative harmony, although the franchise has developed the arcs of Wick and other characters quite well.

John Wick 4 became one of the biggest hits of this year and added yet another scintillating chapter to the franchise. However, the ending of the film raises many questions as to the future of the franchise.

If you have seen and enjoyed John Wick 4, you may be wondering if there will be a sequel or a standalone film set in the same cinematic arc. Here’s what we know at the time of writing:

Warning: This article contains spoilers about the end of John Wick 4.

What is John Wick 4 about?

John Wick 4 saw the titular assassin come up against the wrath of The High Table in the form of Marquis Vincent. Wick, who was thrown off the roof by Winston in the third film, quietly recovered in the underground world ruled by the Bowery King. Wick got back on his feet and set out to avenge his position.

After killing the Elder in the desert, he sparked an outrage from The Table, who tasked Vincent with the task of getting Wick’s head. As a result of his merciless methods, Winston lost his Continental in New York, while the Osaka Continental was also destroyed after harbouring Wick.

Vincent roped in Caine, a blind assassin and former friend of Wick’s. The familiar face is forced into hunting down Wick in exchange for his daughter’s life. Although Winston does not approve of what John has done, he wants Vincent to pay for killing Charon, Winston’s loyal manager and friend. Winston revives an old High Table tradition that gives Wick an opportunity to set the record straight once and for all.

Will there be a John Wick 5?

The decision for a sequel was under deliberation for a long time before the release of the fourth film. Reeves was quite interested in assuming the role once again. But given how the ending of the last film panned out, that became moot. It is unclear if Wicks’ death at the end of the fourth film was the plan all along or if it changed when he refused to do a fifth film.

The original contract that Reeves signed with Lions Gate dictated four films with an option to extend for one more. However, Chad Stahelski, who has directed all four instalments, came to the conclusion with Reeves that a fifth film will probably “not be as good.”

The studio still went ahead and internally started work on a fifth film. But Stahelski made it clear that there are no plans for an immediate sequel, stating:

“In our minds, Keanu and I are done for the moment. We’re going to give John Wick a rest. I’m sure the studio has a plan. If everyone loves it and it goes kooky, then we’ll take a quiet minute.”

In May of this year, Lions Gate Chairman Joe Drake confirmed a fifth John Wick film without Reeves’ character. His revelation was startling given Stahelski and Reeves’ unwillingness to do another film. But Parker made it clear that they will be going “across the universe” and “exploring different characters” for the sequel. In a statement, Parker said:

“We’re now moving across that franchise, not just in the AAA video game space, but looking at what the regular cadence of spin-offs, television really growing that universe so that there is a steady cadence of a franchise that there’s a clear appetite by the audience.”

What is official is that, as you know, Ballerina is the first spinoff that comes out next year. We’re in development on three others, including [John Wick 5] and including television series, The Continental, which will be airing soon. And so, we’re building out the world and when that five movie comes, will be organic — will be organically grown out of how we’re starting to tell those stories. But you can rely on a regular cadence of John Wick.”

What could John Wick 5 be about?

As revealed by Parker’s statements, Ballerina has a release date, which is June 7, 2024. Ana de Armas will be playing the titular character, building on her action-role appearances in the James Bond film No Time To Die and Apple TV Plus’ Ghosted. Reeves will be returning for the standalone sequel but it must be made clear that he will not come back for John Wick 5. Ian McShane will also be appearing in the movie as Winston.

Ballerina’s character stems from Anjelica Huston’s character from the third film. The plot for Ballerina is not yet clear but early indications from Len Wiseman, the director of the film, suggest that the story will be markedly different from Wick’s arc. It will be a proper introduction to the character with an emotional storyline as well. However, the brand of action shall continue to enthral viewers.

As far as John Wick 5 is concerned, there is no information about its plot or casting. Early development work has started which will have a significant bearing on how the final film looks. However, fans of the franchise don’t have to wait too long to see more of the cinematic universe as The Continental, a new TV series about a young Winston, will be releasing in September.

When could John Wick 5 be released?

As we don’t have any concrete information to go on, it’s fair to assume that the film won’t be ready until it is ready. We expect 2027 to be a realistic year for the release of John Wick 5 as Lions Gate has a lot to figure out.

The group seems determined to make the John Wick franchise its newest cash cow. So we remain optimistic that John Wick 5 will be the last of the three projects Parker touched upon. That means at least two more spinoffs and standalone films will be released before the fifth film.

That’s all we know for now but if we do hear news of a sequel, we will update this page with the relevant information.
