Despicable Me 4 is the hilarious sequel to the 2017 movie that was first released in June 2024. Helmed by Chris Renaud who has been on board since the first Despicable Me movie, Part 4 has everything from funny heists and babysitting toddlers to clumsy supervillains and heartfelt moments.
The movie also has new and familiar faces alike including Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Joey King, Miranda Cosgrove, Will Ferrell, Sofia Vergara and Stephen Colbert. While it has a sweet conclusion, it made us nostalgic for the 2010s animated movies which had us hungering for more.

What is Despicable Me 4 about?
Despicable Me 4 is back a whopping 7 years later after the 3rd instalment. The animated comedy sees the return of Gru and his growing family as they are forced to get into a witness protection program after crossing paths with the wrong villain. In Despicable Me 4, Gru gets his old classmate and nemesis, Maxime Le Mal arrested. However, the villain escapes and is hellbent on kidnapping Gru’s son.
AVL shifts Gru’s family to Mayflower where they have difficulties adopting their new identities and fitting in. To make it worse, the neighbour’s kid, Poppy recognises Gru and blackmails him into helping her in a heist. As for the minions, AVL enlists them into their Super Serum program in hopes of turning them into superheroes.

Will there be a Despicable Me 5?
At the time of writing, Universal Pictures hasn’t announced a sequel to Despicable Me 4.
Despicable Me 4 has been co-produced by Universal Pictures and Illumination which have several titles to their names. They also have several franchises like Sing, The Secret Life of Pets and Minions which is a spin-off of Despicable Me.
But like any studio, a sequel depends on the popularity, views and drop-off rates. Some movies are instantly renewed like Despicable Me 2 and The Super Mario Bros while others take years such as Minions and Despicable Me 4.
However, the Despicable Me franchise is well-established and much loved that whatever is put out instantly does well, commercially and critically such as Part 4 which was a box-office success. So, if the studios are feeling like it, they can announce a Part 5 anytime they want a quick cash grab.
What do we know about Despicable Me 5?
Not much is known about Despicable Me 5 at the moment given that it has not been greenlit. It has a definite ending with Gru patching up with Maxime, everyone singing along and Ralph the minion escaping the safehouse in the credits.
If we do get Part 5, it could continue to look at the antics and misadventures of Gru’s family. The studios could also make another minions movie in between or even create a spin-off series with Poppy, the neighbourhood’s aspiring villain.
However, nothing is confirmed yet, but we’ll be sure to update this page as soon as any new information comes in.
