2023 was a great year for horror movies, with the likes of Talk to Me, Evil Dead Rise, and Brooklyn 45 doing their best to thrill and unnerve critics and movie audiences.
Looking ahead, there are a lot of horror movies scheduled for release in 2024. Some of these we’re not looking forward to – Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey 2 we’re looking at you – but there are several new horror flicks due for release this year that appear to be quite promising.
Time will tell if the following movies are any good, of course, but for now, these are our most anticipated horror movies of 2024.
Do you agree with our picks? What horror movies are you looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below.
Imaginary
Release Date: March 8, 2024
Fantasy Island and Truth Or Dare director Jeff Wadlow is at the helm of this Blumhouse horror about a woman who returns to her childhood home and discovers her stepdaughter Alice has an eerie attachment to a stuffed bear named Chauncey that she found in the basement.
The teddy bear in the picture doesn’t look very scary but as Alice’s games become increasingly sinister, it’s clear the cuddly toy might not be as innocent as it initially appears!
The First Omen
Release Date: April 5, 2024
The Omen is one of the scariest horror films of all time and its immediate sequel was pretty creepy too. This upcoming movie is a prequel to the 1976 classic and it is centered around a woman who, after moving to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, discovers a conspiracy to bring about the birth of the antichrist.
Ralph Ineson, who recently voiced a demon in The Exorcist: Believer, stars as Father Brennan, the priest who attempted to thwart the devil child’s awakening in the original movie. Nell Tiger Free (Servant) plays the woman who discovers the church’s conspiracy but as we know from the events that followed later, she isn’t destined to stop their dastardly plans.
Return to Silent Hill
Release Date: (Possibly April but this is unconfirmed)
Slated for a release sometime in 2024 is Return to Silent Hill, the third entry in the horror series adapted from the popular video games. Christophe Gans, who directed the first film, is back at the helm for this one which is an adaptation of the second game in the series.
Jeremy Irvine stars as James Sunderland, a man who returns to the town of Silent Hill after receiving a letter from his soulmate. As he searches the town for his beloved, he quickly discovers the town is no longer the place from his memories as it is now inhabited by terrifying forces. The plot will be familiar to you if you have played the game which, co-incidentally, is getting a remake this year on current-gen consoles.
Horrorscope
Release Date: May 10, 2024
Spider-Man actor Jacob Batalon stars in this upcoming movie about a group of college friends who get their horoscopes read and begin dying in ways that are connected to their readings.
Will they be able to change what has been written in the stars? Or are they doomed to the fates that have been pre-destined for them? As we don’t believe in horoscopes, we aren’t able to predict the movie’s plotline (we don’t even have an image – the above is taken from one of the Spider-Man movies) but all will be revealed once the stars align and this movie releases.
The Watchers
Release Date: June 7, 2024
You can’t see them. But they can see you!
This is the tagline of the novel by A.M. Shine which is the basis for this upcoming fantasy horror from director Ishana Night Shyamalan. The film follows a 28-year-old artist named Mina (Dakota Fanning) who gets stranded in an expansive forest in Western Ireland with three strangers and becomes stalked by mysterious creatures.
Will Ishana follow in her father’s footsteps and catch us off guard with a last-minute twist? We have no idea but here’s hoping the film is as good as the acclaimed novel.
A Quiet Place: Day One
Release Date: June 28, 2024
As the title suggests, this movie is a prequel to the 2018 John Krasinki-directed chiller that dropped us slap-bang in the middle of an alien invasion. This movie takes us back to the beginning of the invasion and incorporates a new cast of characters who have to deal with the creatures that possess a heightened sense of hearing.
Not a lot has been said about the plot of the movie – the radio silence is quite appropriate – but we do know the cast members include Lupita Nyong’o (Little Monsters), Alex Wolff (Hereditary), and Joseph Quinn (Stranger Things). Directing the film is Michael Sarnoski (Pig) who will hopefully be able to ratchet up the tension the same way Krasinski did in the first two films.
Trap
Release Date: August 2, 2024
Trap is a psychological horror movie set at a concert. We don’t know much more than that as the movie’s director, M. Night Shyamalan, is remaining typically tight-lipped about the plotline. We do know that Josh Hartnett is in the movie though, as a father who gets involved in the events that happen at the concert. But other than that tidbit of information, we know very little.
Expect one of the director’s trademark twist endings at the conclusion of the story, perhaps one where the protagonists discover they’re not at a concert but in outer space, where a cameoing Admiral Ackbar announces to all who will listen… “It’s a trap!”
Speak No Evil
Release Date: August 9, 2024
One of the most disturbing movies of 2022 was Speak No Evil, a Danish horror tale which revolved around a family who unwisely accepted an invitation to spend a few days with a friendly couple they met on vacation. Not long into their stay, troubling things began to happen, leading to one of the most disturbing endings in recent horror movie history. We won’t reveal any more of the plot here but if you would like to know more, check out our review of the movie.
This remake stars Mackenzie Davis and James McAvoy as the people whose lives become a living hell after they step foot in the idyllic country home of their less-than-hospitable hosts.
Alien: Romulus
Release Date: August 16, 2024
Plot details are thin on the ground for this next movie in the Alien franchise but according to its star, Cailee Spaeny, it takes place between the first two Alien movies and is set on a distant planet.
Fede Alvarez, the director of Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe, is at the helm of this movie so we’re optimistic we’ll be given plenty of reason to scream when the movie hits its expected released date.
Nosferatu
Release Date: December 25, 2024
Willem Dafoe, who once starred as Nosferatu actor Max Schreck in the 2000 movie Shadow of the Vampire, stars in this remake of the 1922 classic as a crazy vampire hunter on the trail of the bloodsucking count. Bill Skarsgård stars as the titular vampire and joining him in the cast are Nicholas Hoult, Emma Corrin and Lily-Rose Depp.
Focus Features describes Robert Eggers’ (The Witch) latest movie as “a gothic tale of obsession between a haunted young woman in 19th century Germany and the ancient Transylvanian vampire who stalks her, bringing untold horror with him.” If that description gets your blood pumping, you’ll no doubt want to see this movie when it releases at the end of the year.
