Welcome to Momodora: Moonlit Farewell! The latest in this underrated Metroidvania is finally here and what a great way to start off the New Year.
After an ominous opening, we need to find the bellringer. From your starting position, jump down from the ledge and take a left. You can attempt to go right if you wish, but the next area is blocked by impenetrable wind that’ll blow you back. So for now, let’s continue to the left.
There are two pathways at the end of this section, one will see you head up onto the next platform (press X to defeat the enemy) and hop over to the bounce-pad (the orange square) to ascend up.
However, if you want to miss the enemy, just continue on the path to the left underneath and you’ll unlock a secret passage that will bounce you all the way up to the top.
In the next section, take a left, defeat the enemy with a few swipes and descend down. You can dodge enemy attacks now with B but be careful, as it does consume stamina. A new enemy will appear soon after to test this out, so get used to timing your swipes so you dodge away from its charge attack.
Drop down a ledge. and quickly pass to the left, using your dodge to avoid the dropping pinwheels (pictured below). If you hold down and jump when you reach a thin platform (like the one pictured with the arrow down), you’ll be able to drop to a lower area. When you do, be sure to ring the bell and replenish your health.
Keep following the tutorials, with the arrow-shooting technique in the first room to defeat the bat enemy and dodging through enemy shields in the next (simply run up to the goon and hit dodge to avoid him completely).
After this section, and defeating the pinwheel circling around the platform, drop down and you’ll be faced with a large gap. You want to jump down and to the right. Don’t worry if you miss the top platform (in the first picture below) but keep climbing up and then head to the right for a secret section. Our destination is highlighted on the map with a Bell symbol but we’ll return here shortly.
Once inside the secret section (picture above), head over and press up to consume 1x Berry. This will increase your maximum HP to 350 Nice! Now head back to the previous area and go and ring the bell at the bottom of those platforms. Offering Lunar Crystals at Bell Shrines allows you to receive a blessing that restores Health and Magic over time. It’ll only last a few minutes but it is super useful. You;ll be offered the chance to do it now, after being given 50x Lunar Crystals. It’s advisable not to use it right now as there are tougher fights ahead but either way, it’s time for our first boss.
Boss Fight – Gariser Demon |
||
It’s time to put everything we’ve learned to good use. The Gariser Demon is pretty straight forward to fight but he does have a few moves to watch out for. It’s also a good chance to hone your technique and using your dodge sparingly. Along with standard slashes, Gariser will use a Sonic Boom attack, where it’ll roar and cause an explosive orb to protrude out its mouth and hit anything nearby to its mouth. Be sure to dodge out the way when it uses this. There’s also a jumping slash attack too which you can also dodge past. At around 50% health or so, Gariser Demon will mix things up and start intensifying its damage from those slashes, with the jumping attack causing several shockwaves to ripple along the ground in front of it, simply dodge the opposite way it’s jumping so you’re behind it. Furthermore, there’s a Fire Breath move that will hit for a good amount of damage if you’re nearby too. Again, make sure you’re behind the demon. A good idea is to mix up your moves here, with slashing attacks nearby until it uses Sonic Boom and Fire Breath. At this point, dodge away and then use your arrows from afar. Do be aware too that dodging uses stamina so don’t go full-on Dark Souls here! |
Eventually the Demon will be defeated and crack the ground below, causing you to plummet down to parts unknown…
