Another thrilling adventure with Ethan Hunt
Well, with an impressive filming budget of 291 million USD, the enduring legacy of one of cinema’s most iconic spies continues in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One. This new installment delivers yet another heart-pounding adventure with Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt, proving once again that he is a force to be reckoned with.
Ethan’s new adventure is thrilling and exciting, with many unexpected twists and turns. And as expected, it is packed with authentic action scenes, from intense car chases to an incredible cliff jump — you know the one which was done by our very own Tom Cruise.
Adapting to modern times, Ethan’s new mission centers around a mysterious and unnamed AI entity. The plot and understanding of how the AI entity works can be a little complex. And if you don’t pay close attention to the dialogue, it is easy to miss a lot of things. Though the AI’s capabilities are both imaginative and impressive, that’s for sure.
This movie introduces a female thief named Grace. Her role has a lot of unexpected significance in this mission, and her character is very well-developed and likeable. This film also pulls in a few people from past Mission: Impossible movies.
Ethan’s companions, Benji and Luther, bring an essential element of familiarity and warmth to the film. Even though Ethan is a lethal spy, his compassion shines through, as seen through his friendships and how he treats his enemies. His empathy is part of the reason why these movies are usually a success.
Like the previous films, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One is perfect for anyone who loves action—it has plenty. Not only does it have an incredible cliff jump involving a motorcycle, but it also has some moving train shenanigans and really difficult car chases with two of the characters driving while handcuffed to each other.
There are also a few somewhat distasteful clichés. For example, in one scene, the director of national intelligence (played by Cary Elwes) is being briefed about what could be the end of the world, and he is looking out the window. His back is turned on his informants as they engage him in dialogue. It’s the kind of typical setting that tries to cast the actor as the authority figure before his role comes up in the dialogue.
It gives the whole scene an incredibly unrealistic feel. Unfortunately, this happens early on in the movie. However, the scene shortly redeems itself with its surprise ending. Another example is the racy party scene that always seems to pop up in spy movies. However, as this is the seventh installment in the Mission: Impossible series, some clichés are to be expected.
Now, there is a character called Gabriel, and the movie tries to make it look like he and a woman that Ethan knew are from a past Mission: Impossible film. But here’s the thing: they aren’t in any of the other films. This definitely gives the story a feeling of unauthenticity.
Overall, the movie is about as good as you’d expect it to be. It’s similar to the other spy films. Action, check. Love interest, check. Danger, check. Surviving the impossible, check. You get the gist.
Tom Cruise really puts his all into these Mission Impossible movies, and with Dead Reckoning Part Two on the way, it looks like we’re not going to see the end of Ethan Hunt anytime soon.
