Double Helix
Episode 4 of Mayfair Witches season 2 starts with Rowan dreaming about what happened between her and Lark. We finally learn that they broke up years ago because Lark applied for a job in New York without telling her.
Presently, Moira wakes Rowan and asks her to fix the Jojo and Daphne situation. Rowan tries to use her powers, but without Lasher, she is not strong enough to pull Jojo and Daphne from the thrall. As they try to figure out their next move, Lark calls Rowan to ask if she is okay. He is worried since Rowan sent him some concerning messages the previous night. They were also supposed to meet up before he departs. Rowan asks Moira to call Ciprien and get him to bring Lasher close enough to the house so she can solve the Jojo-Daphne situation.
Typically, that would have worked, but there is a situation. Albrecht is in the winds with Lasher. Using his powers, Ciprien learns that Albrecht betrayed The Talamasca and brought Lasher somewhere else. As expected, Ciprien is pissed when he realises Albrecht used him again.
Back at the Mayfair mansion, Rowan leaves to meet with Lark. The two reminisce for a while until Lark brings up Rowan’s strange behaviour lately. She explains that she is worried about some recent deaths in her family, but she can’t talk about it in detail. Rowan thanks him for helping, and Lark tries to assure her he won’t let her down this time.
At the mansion, Cortland remains locked in his dad’s room with Millie’s ghost haunting him. Moara remains behind, trying to call Ciprien and find a way to communicate with Daphne. She gets a call from a fellow family member, Ryan, inviting her to a family gathering. Everyone is angry about Rowan and wants to protect themselves. As they talk, the house starts falling apart, causing Moira to call Rowan. Rowan quickly says goodbye to Lark and leaves. Unfortunately, Lark takes Rowan’s cup and calls his office to ask for access to a nearby lab.
Once Rowan gets home, she is shocked by the state of the house. She and Moira agree to reach out to Cortland and find out what he knows about Lasher. Moira uses her mind-reading skills to establish that Cortland was working with Albrecht because of his dad, Julian. However, Cortland has no clue about Lasher’s true motives. Moira also notes that Cortland seems scared of his dad.
As Cortland rushes to turn on music to keep Moira out of his head, they notice Julian’s antique Victrola is missing. They realise that Dolly Jean took it the previous night. Rowan asks Cortland to stay behind and help find a second solution if Dolly Jean offers no answers.
Meanwhile, at the Talamasca, Ciprien finds Albrecht’s last message for him in his office. It seems Albrecht was intent on betraying the organisation, but why? As Ciprien continues to investigate, he finds a piece of paper left behind in the firepit. Before he can look into it, a new agent, Polina, arrives. She starts questioning Ciprien and takes him in for further questioning. She is certain that Ciprien was in cahoots with Albrecht and can answer the elders’ questions.
Elsewhere, Rowan and Moira arrive at Dolly Jean’s house and find her in a trance. Evelyn stops them from pulling Dolly Jean from her trance. She explains that Julian bound himself to the antique victrola before his death. Dolly Jean and Evelyn take turns to continue their relationship with Julian in the afterlife. After a while, Dolly Jean’s time with Julian runs out, and Evelyn pulls her out.
With Dolly Jean safely back, Rowan questions her about Julian and if he knows more about Lasher. Dolly Jean shares that Julian is the one person who might know Lasher’s motives. However, Julian claims to be in the dark after Albrecht took Lasher away. Of course, Rowan and Moira don’t believe that Julian is telling the truth. Rowan insists on going inside the antique victrola to talk to Julian. Dolly Jean and Evelyn try to warn her that it is dangerous.
Julian is still a powerful wizard even in his death, and he shows no mercy for his enemies. As they argue back and forth, Moira rushes to the antique victrola and falls into a trance. She starts shouting, and Rowan pulls her free against the sisters’ warning. Moira starts gasping for air, and they rush her to the hospital since Rowan has no powers to heal her.
Back at the Mayfair house, Millie continues to torment Cortland. Millie is still hurt by what her dad did to the love of her life. She blames Cortland for also turning out like their dad. However, Cortland convinces her that he truly loves Jojo and wants to help her. He convinces Millie to pass a message to Jojo, and she begrudgingly agrees to help him.
After Moira regains consciousness, Rowan talks to her about her dilemma with Lasher. Moira comes to understand Rowan, and they bond over their Mayfair trauma. Moira offers to be Rowan’s rope, and they head back to Dolly Jean’s house accompanied by Cortland.
In the meantime, Lark gets the result of his last test. Based on the test, he realises there is a connection between Rowan and the sample she gave him.
Back at Dolly Jean’s house, Rowan goes into the antique victrola to meet Julian. Everyone warns her to be cautious, and the episode ends with Julian letting her in.
The Episode Review
Why is Ciprien surprised that Albrecht turned out to be a liar? Didn’t he learn his lesson the last time? Albrecht is now in the wind with Lasher, and we know that he is not doing it for the good of the world. What does Lasher have on Albrecht to make him take such a drastic decision? What is Albrecht’s real mission, and how will he help Lasher discover and achieve his true destiny?
On the other hand, Julian is coming off as an intriguing villain. We could use a new villain to spice up things in this season. So far, all we have heard and seen is Lasher. It was nice of the writers to add Julian as a dark character. It helps to shed light on a lot of the things happening in the Mayfair family. We also finally understand why Cortland acts the way he does.
As the season reaches its midpoint, the show is gaining momentum. With only four episodes left, a few plot lines are still unresolved. We still don’t know Lasher’s objectives, but the upcoming meeting between Rowan and Julian may finally reveal the truth.
