Mash Burnedead and You Look and You Lose Your Life
Episode 6 of Mashle: Magic and Muscles Season 2 continues exploring “The Life Crystal” phase of the Divine Visionary Candidate Exam competition. Macaron spots two participants from an opposing team and tells them to drop their crystals and quit. The participants try to retaliate with powerful spells but fail. Macaron grabs their crystal and crushes it.
Then, the announcer informs everyone that this phase has concluded earlier than expected because another team dropped out. Dot and Mash celebrate their achievement briefly. Then, Mash senses something’s amiss. Wahlberg, Macaron, and the audience know the next exam phase will be brutal, unlike Mash. We receive a spooky confrontation between Mash and Macaron.
Afterward, we shift to Walhberg conversing with the Magic Talent Administration’s head, Kaldo. They discuss Mash and Macaron’s chances of becoming the next Divine Visionary. Additionally, Kaldo knows Wahlberg finds Mash alluring. However, Kaldo has his doubts about Mash.
In a room, one of Macaron’s comrades asks Macaron to avenge him and offers to slip a laxative in Mash’s drinks to help Macaron prevail. This angers Macaron, because he doesn’t want anyone getting involved. Macaron senses Orter’s nearby and tells him not to get involved either. Orter promises Macaron he won’t get involved as long as he defeats Mash.
Elsewhere, we cut to Mash answering several questions regarding his training regime. Finn finds Mash’s actions baffling since he’s talking to himself. Lemon ends up doing the same self-interview routine Mash’s doing, confusing Finn further. More hilarious sequences ensue until Kaldo arrives.
Kaldo asks Mash to play a game with him. Mash refuses and Dot praises Mash for standing up to Kaldo. Kaldo tells Mash if he doesn’t acknowledge Mash, he may not be able to become a Divine Visionary. After hearing this, Mash tells Kaldo that he’ll accept his request. Kaldo states if Mash can defeat him, he’ll grant him a pass on the exam.
Kaldo tells Mash they’ll be playing a game called “You look, you lose,” and Mash accepts. Before they begin, Kaldo summons a circle around Mash and states how his version of “You look, you lose” is different from the one Mash is familiar with. After Kaldo announces his version’s rules, he and Mash play the game.
Despite pulling off a fantastic showcase during this game, Mash ends up losing by looking in the “right” direction. Fortunately for Mash, Kaldo tells him he’ll let that slide and count this as a draw between them. However, Kaldo tells Mash he may not be able to defeat Macaron.
Kaldo departs and contemplates his experience with Mash and questions what’s motivating him to become a Divine Visionary. Simultaneously, Kaldo hopes Mash will reach his and the others’ level. After that, the exam announcer informs everyone about the exam’s final phase.
She says the remaining participants will compete in one-on-one battles and must make their opponent give up or pass out. The first battle is between Mash and Macaron. Before they battle, Mash and Macaron agree to have a food break. Mash finds Macaron’s shrimp and tartar sauce shenanigans strange.
Elsewhere, Kaldo shares his thoughts on why Orter chose Macaron to be the one to defeat Mash and why Orter hasn’t gotten involved yet. Macaron and Mash properly begin their battle. Macaron sends Mash straight into a wall with his magic ball attack. After the smoke clears, Macaron and the audience notice Mash isn’t on the wall. Suddenly, Mash appears behind Macaron and grabs him.
Mash performs his Spine Magic: Hell Fall technique on Macaron. While people question if Mash defeated Macaron, Finn tells Dot that Mash never hit the wall to begin with. He says while Mash was holding off Macaron’s attack, he ran backwards swiftly. This prevented Mash from colliding with the wall.
After the smoke caused by Mash’s technique clears up, we learn his technique didn’t harm Macaron. Macaron tells Mash that he’s just getting started. The episode closes with the two preparing to resume their battle.
The Episode Review
Although Rayne Ames made Macaron look like a pushover in a previous chapter, this episode will convince audiences that Macaron isn’t someone worth downplaying. It’s as Dot says in this episode, Mashle’s craziest mages are typically the ones who hold the most power. While this battle is far from over, I’m excited to see what other music-themed tricks Macaron has up his sleeve.
Macaron aside, Kaldo seems like an interesting figure, too. While the episode doesn’t delve too much into his character, many will find his views of competitors like Mash and Macaron fascinating. Additionally, the “You look, you lose” game between Mash and Kaldo was delightful. Hopefully, the series will delve into Kaldo further after this competition ends.
Unfortunately, The Life Crystal competition results weren’t as pleasing as one would hope. While this final exam phase instills hope that other competitors will get their chance to shine like Lance, it would’ve been great to have one more episode dedicated to exploring “The Life Crystal” portion further.
Overall, this was a decent chapter of Mashle: Magic and Muscles. There were some neat action and comedic bits tossed in to entertain the masses, but there are things in here that’ll leave others mildly disappointed. We’re hopeful this final exam phase will instill immense joy and pleasure in audiences though.
