Level 1-1
Welcome to our Mario Vs. Donkey Kong playthrough. It appears Donkey Kong’s up to something nefarious based on the game’s opening events. Thankfully we’re here to help you reclaim the items Donkey Kong stole from Mario’s factory. Before we confront Donkey Kong, we’ll need to get through these levels first. For Level 1-1, you’ll need to activate the blue switch by jumping on it.
You can jump by pressing the A/B button. This will cause the stage’s red blocks to disappear and the blue blocks to appear. Then, head toward the blue ladder and move your controller’s analog stick upward to climb it. Once you reach that platform, jump to retrieve the present. Afterward, move your analog stick downward to descend the ladder. Travel to the red switch and activate it.
The red blocks should appear on your screen now. Next, travel to the yellow spring and jump on it. It’s worth noting that you need to press the A/B button twice since your first jump only gives you a small hop. After you tap either button two times, you should be able to claim the present. To grab the key, press your controller’s X/Y button. After that, head over to the locked door.
After Mario unlocks the door, you’ll be taken to the level’s second phase as shown in the image below. This one contains several enemies and tools you can use to defeat the Shy Guys. Head over to the trash can and press the same button you used to grab the key. With the trash can in hand, toss it at the Shy Guy using the X/Y button. After that, jump to retrieve the blue present.
Then, navigate toward the ladder, climb it, and grab the trash can on the top floor. Use the trash can to defeat the first Shy Guy in front of you. For the others, we recommend jumping on top of one of the Shy Guy’s heads. While on top of them, use the X/Y button to pick one of them up. Be careful not to collide with the third Shy Guy on the top platform, as you will perish.
With that Shy Guy in your possession, toss it at the remaining Shy Guy to defeat them. With your enemies defeated, head over to the Mini-Mario Toy and press the X/Y button to pick it up. After that, you’ll receive this neat win screen. Congrats! You’ve completed Level 1-1, but we’re not done yet.
Level 1-2
The next level features all sorts of ladders for us to climb and foes for us to defeat. To start, climb the ladder until you reach the top platform. To your right, you’ll find two Shy Guys, a hammer, a blue switch, and a yellow present. Before we nab the yellow present, you’ll want to nab the hammer and use it to defeat the Shy Guys.
As soon as you jump toward the hammer, Mario will start swinging the tool. Move left and right to defeat the Shy Guys. Once you defeat them, you’ll want to unequip the hammer. You can do so by performing this game’s Up-Throw mechanic. Simply, hold your analog stick upward. While holding, press the X/Y button. Doing so will cause Mario to throw the hammer into the air.
You’ll want to avoid leaping toward the hammer. Additionally, you should move away from the area where you threw it, otherwise, Mario will grab and use it again. After you dispose of the hammer, head toward the blue switch and activate it. As always, this will cause the red blocks to disappear and the blue blocks to appear.
Once the red blocks are gone, walk over to the yellow present’s location and claim it. Next, head down the blue stairs and nab the red present on the bottom left of your screen. After you obtain that, head up the blue stairs and activate the red switch on your right. This will allow you to nab this phase’s key.
After you activate the red switch, we’ll want to destroy that fire-lit oil can. Touching that will net you a death, and no one likes death. We’ll annihilate the can by using the hammer found on this phase’s second-floor level. Climb down the red ladder until you reach this phase’s second-floor level. Once you’re there, leap at the hammer.
While in Mario’s attacking phase, stroll over to the oil can’s location and destroy it. Once it’s destroyed use the same Up-Throw technique from earlier to get rid of the hammer. Then grab the key. When you have the key, head over to the second floor’s blue switch and activate it. Next, jump off the platform while holding the key and head over to the locked door.
Interestingly, this level has a neat 1-Up Mushroom. This tasty treat will help Mario gain an extra life. But before, we head toward it, use the green ladder and head toward this phase’s second floor. Once there, grab the trash can. Once obtained, jump on top of the yellow spring to propel yourself toward this phase’s third floor level.
Throw the trash can at the Shy Guy. After that, jump toward this floor level’s hammer because we’ll need it to defeat those flame enemies. Make sure to jump when the flames are away from the hammer to avoid dying. Once you have the hammer, pummel those flames and nab that succulent 1-Up Mushroom.
After you do all that, use the Up-Throw technique to get rid of the hammer. After you rid yourself of the hammer, head down to the first-floor level via the green stairs below. Once you’re on the first floor, jump toward that floor’s hammer and wipe out those oil cans. Once you decimate the oil cans, use the Up-Throw technique to get rid of this hammer.
After that, nab the blue present and head up the green stairs in the middle. Once you reach this area, head toward the Mini-Mario Toy toward your right. Once you’re properly next to it, grab the little guy. After that, you’ll be greeted with another victory screen as shown below.
Don’t celebrate just yet, we still have plenty more levels to conquer.
Level 1-3
Pressing onward, we arrive at Level 1-3. This one introduces the Wire Jump technique. As the question mark box suggests, players must jump onto the wire and move their analog stick upward numerous times. To reach the platform itself, you should get Mario into his Crouched Position first.
You can do this by holding down your analog stick. While holding, press the A button and Mario will get in the stance as shown in the third image below. Once he’s in that position, press the A button again and hold your analog stick upward. This should allow you to successfully grab the wire as shown in the first image below.
Once you’re in that position, move and hold your analog stick upward to gain velocity. Once you have enough speed, press the A button again. After that, players should be able to retrieve the red present after leaping off the wire with Mario.
As for the yellow present, players should avoid leaping toward it from the first platform. Doing so will result in your death. Instead, navigate toward the second grey platform that’s moving up and down. Once you’re on this platform, leap onto the yellow switch as shown in the image below.
As shown in the photo, this will cause our lovely red blocks to disappear, resulting in the grey trash cans falling toward the spikes. As one can expect, players should use the trash cans to carefully reach the yellow present. Once you retrieve the yellow present, wait for the first grey platform to descend toward Mario. Once it’s in the jumping distance, jump onto the first grey platform.
After that, you’ll want to wait until the platform reaches the green structure where the yellow key is located. When you’re near the yellow key, grab it. Once you retrieve it head over to this phase’s locked door because we still have a present, Mini-Mario Toy, and a handy 1-Up Mushroom to obtain.
Before we go for the blue present and Mini-Mario Toy, you might want to nab yourself an extra life via this phase’s 1-Up Mushroom. Considering I died during my playthrough, nabbing one might be for the best. To obtain it, we’ll use the same method we used to obtain the red present from Level 1-3’s first phase. You’ll use the Crouch-Jump technique to latch onto the first wire.
Then, once you have enough momentum, jump again to reach the second wire. Once you grab a hold of the second wire, make sure you’re in the right position by moving your analog stick left or right. When you’re in the correct position, use the same momentum-gathering trick you used for the first wire. This will allow you to successfully obtain this level’s 1-Up Mushroom.
You should now be on the platform where the 1-Up Mushroom was hovering over. If so, carefully drop toward the ground and head over to the ladder as shown in the image above. Climb the ladder to the top platform, but tread carefully as two Shy Guys are wandering that area. To defeat the Shy Guy, we recommend leaping on one of the Shy Guys and throwing them at the one that’s not in your grasp.
After you deal with those pesky Shy Guys, grab a spare trash can and head over to the vertical grey platform. Wait until that platform reaches ground level and carefully hop off it. With your trash can in hand, throw it underneath the blue present. Once you’ve done that, leap onto the trash can. Make sure to nab the blue present, too.
Once you obtain the blue present, carefully leap to the other side and take that helpful green ladder to the top platform. Navigate toward your right and wait for the vertical grey platform to reach you. Once it does, leap onto it. Wait until it reaches the Mini-Mario Toy’s location. Once it does, jump over to that Mini-Mario Toy’s location. When you’re near the toy, grab it.
Eureka! You’ve successfully cleared Level 1-3 and nabbed yourself an extra life on top of it all. However, don’t celebrate yet, because there are still more levels for us to complete.
Level 1-4
While this level looks like a daunting task, we’ll be helping you overcome its hurdles. We’ll be utilizing many tricks from the previous level to conquer this one. First, climb the green ladder until you reach this phase’s second-floor level. Then, execute that Crouching-Jump technique we mentioned in our coverage of Level 1-3. Perform this near the conveyor belt where the red present is located.
Press the A/B button twice periodically to obtain that red present. Then, hold your analog stick down to enter Mario’s crouching phase because we must nab that yellow key on your left screen. Once you’re in great leaping distance, jump toward that key’s location and grab it.
Once you have it, navigate your way to this phase’s first floor by using the gap below you. You should be on the first floor’s conveyor belt now. If so, throw the key to your right and make Mario crouch. When you’re near this phase’s locked door grab the yellow key and head toward it.
This next phase is a little tricky since it has some new obstacles for us to overcome. Moreover, if you jump toward this phase’s question mark block, it’ll inform you about this game’s Free-Scroll Mode. While holding your controller’s R button, you’ll be able to freeze the game and use the camera to freely observe this phase’s surroundings.
That aside, before we grab the yellow and blue present, let’s nab ourselves a 1-Up Mushroom. Climb this phase’s green ladder and when you’re on that platform, use the crouching-jump technique to latch onto the wire. Be careful though. This has a spark enemy that aims to murder Mario.
Once you’re on the wire, use the Wire-Jump technique from Level 1-3 to nab the 1-Up Mushroom. Since the blue present is just above the 1-Up Mushroom (location-wise), hold your analog stick upward for about 5-6 seconds to gain a lot of momentum. We’ll use that momentum to not only obtain the mushroom but to reach the second wire above.
When you’re on the second wire, move toward your right and give your analog stick a quick flick upward to obtain the blue present. After you obtain that present, press the A button to let go of the wire. Then, enter Mario’s crouch phase and navigate your way toward this level’s first floor level. Remember, we still need to nab that yellow present from earlier.
After you nab that yellow present, repeat the same steps we used to obtain the 1-Up Mushroom and blue present earlier. Once you’re on that conveyor belt from earlier, use the Crouching-Jump method to land on the conveyor belt toward your right. Once on it, move left and jump on the small conveyor belt toward your left.
Next, head for that Mini-Mario Toy and claim it. You’ll be greeted by another win screen. Let’s move onto that next level.
Level 1-5
While we’re a ways off from completing the Mario Toy Company world, let’s not give up yet. Level 1-5 properly introduces players to the Up-Throw game mechanic. You’ll perform this by grabbing your item with your X/Y button. After doing so, hold your analog stick upward and press either button to send your item soaring above Mario’s head.
That said, grab the trash can and waltz over to the first green platform with an attached ladder to it. Use the Up-Throw mechanic to send your trash can onto that platform. Once you’ve done that, head over to that ladder and climb it. Once you’re on the platform where your trash can is present, grab your trash can and chuck it at that annoying Shy Guy, or if you’re a pacifist, you can leave him be.
If you happen to jump on the blue switch, don’t worry about it. Simply, climb down the ladder and head to the area shown in the second image. Make sure to nab the red present. If you activate the red switch, don’t panic. Climb the second ladder and hit the blue switch again. This will result in the red blocks disappearing, allowing you to nab the yellow key.
After you activate the blue switch, travel to the yellow key’s location and grab it. With the key in Mario’s hand, head over and activate the red switch toward your left. This will cause the red blocks to appear and the blue blocks to vanish.
Once that occurs, jump onto the yellow spring to reach the green platform. While on the green platform, head over to the locked door because we still have two presents and a Mini-Mario Toy to retrieve.
In Level 1-5’s second phase, you’ll want to head over and grab that trash can. Use the Up-Throw mechanic to send it to the platform where the Shy Guy is present. Then, climb the ladder and grab that yellow present. After you obtain that yellow present, use the trash can to annihilate the Shy Guy.
Once you’ve dealt with that enemy, climb the ladder to reach the platform that has two Shy Guy enemies. Additionally, there’s a platform toward your left with a fire-lit oil-can. Moreover, you’ll likely spot two more platforms above that one. One has a Shy Guy while the other has the Mini-Mario Toy.
Before we go for that toy, we have to get that blue present. Unfortunately, the oil-can is guarding the blue present, so we’ll need to conquer it. You can defeat the Shy Guys and oil-can by using the hammer item. You can conquer this part in several ways. We suggest waiting for the Shy Guy to reach the platform near the oil-can as in the image above.
When it does, jump on top of the Shy Guy’s head and then leap toward the hammer. Once you do, you’ll automatically trigger the hammer’s attacking animation, which will allow you to annihilate this pesky oil-can. After that, use the Up-Throw mechanic to toss the hammer into the air because you can’t leap with this item. When the hammer’s gone, grab the blue present.
If there are any Shy Guys around, don’t worry. The hammer will pop up again in a few seconds. When it does, use it to defeat that Shy Guy on the platform. After that, head over to the yellow spring and use it to propel yourself to the final Shy Guy’s platform. Be careful not to collide with that Shy Guy though.
When you’re on that Shy Guy’s platform, leap over to the Mini-Mario Toy’s location. When you’ve arrived at that toy’s area, grab it. Congrats! You’ve conquered Level 1-5 and and earned every reward it offered. However, we still have two more levels to conquer before we fight that husky ape, Donkey Kong!
Level 1-6
Before we tackle that Mini-Mario Level, we need to conquer this one. This is where the game will properly inform you about the Crouching-Jump mechanic (referred to as the Handstand Jump). Additionally, it’ll inform you about Mario’s Backflip mechanic. For now, use the Handstand Jump to hop on top of the red blocks.
Once there, use the Handstand Jump again to land on top of the platform with the yellow switch on it. Climb the yellow ladder until you reach the top. Once there, you’ll need to use the Handstand Double Jump to reach the higher platform. This is performed in the same fashion as the normal Handstand Jump.
However, this involves you pressing the A button a second time after the first jump. Mario should appear in the position shown in the photo above. After you successfully perform this maneuver, head over to the right side of this phase’s level and activate the blue switch. Descend the blue ladder and activate the yellow switch. After that, head over and claim that red present.
After you claim the red present, navigate toward your right and activate the red switch. Once activated, head toward the locked door’s area and descend the red ladder. The question mark block toward your right will inform you that Mario’s Handstand position prevents him from receiving damage from falling objects like the brick monster’s bricks.
Having said that, activate the blue switch. Then, get into that Handstand Jump position and move your analog stick to your right until you reach the yellow key nearby. Grab the yellow key and use this level’s two springs to reach this phase’s third-floor level.
When you’re on the third floor level, activate the yellow switch. After that, activate the red switch. Then, make your way toward the locked door to enter the next phase.
As for the next phase, you’ll want to get into the Handstand Jump position again and walk over to the trash can. When you’re by the trash can, grab it, jump, and use the Up-Throw mechanic to get it on the platform. Interacting with the question mark block on your left will inform you about Mario’s Backflip maneuver.
To perform this, move your analog stick to the right or left a smidge. Simultaneously, tilt it in the opposite direction. Then, hit the A button. You should then be able to perform the jump as shown in the image above. When you’re on the platform with the trash can on it, jump on top of the can and then jump on the platform with the Shy Guy on it.
You can use the trash can to defeat the Shy Guy, too, if you want. However, we suggest jumping on top of the Shy Guy and using it to defeat the other Shy Guy on the platform above. Whatever method you prefer will work though. Once defeated, hop over to the area where the yellow present is present. Jump to retrieve it and walk on top of the trash can enemy.
He will escort you safely to the hammer. Once you collide with the hammer, use it to defeat the trash and oil can enemies. When they’re gone, use the Up-Throw technique to get rid of the hammer. Then, obtain the blue present and Mini-Mario Toy. After that, you’ll be greeted by this lovely win screen. With these levels complete, let’s see what this Mini-Mario Level has in store for us.
Mini-Mario Level
After conquering Level 1-6, we arrive at the game’s first Mini-Mario Level. Instead of collecting presents and Mini-Mario Toys, we’ll be leading our figurines to the Mini-Mario Toy Chest depicted in the image above. Additionally, we’ll be collecting the T, O, and Y Letter Boxes. First, let’s get those letters, starting with the letter T.
Before we begin, it’s worth noting that the Mini-Mario Toys will follow your lead. However, they cannot climb ladders. Oddly enough, they can leap over blocks though. That tidbit aside, head over to the ladder and climb it. Once you reach the red platform, head right. While you’re doing that, the Mini-Mario Toys should nab the T-Letter Box for you.
If you continue moving right, you’ll spot a yellow switch. Jump on that switch to remove the red blocks from your screen. Doing so will allow the Mini-Mario Toys to head on the grey platform you’re currently on. Once your toy companions are next to you, navigate toward the yellow ladder and climb it.
Once you’re on the platform, head toward your left. Doing so will entice the Mini-Mario Toys to follow you. This will result in them nabbing the O-Letter Box for you. Unfortunately, you’re Mini-Mario Toys will run into trouble after they nab that box. Fortunately, we’re here to help you free them.
As shown in the image above, keep heading in the same direction and you’ll inevitably run into a red switch on your screen. When you do, jump on it and continue moving left until you reach the grey platform. Doing so will entice the Mini-Mario Toys to follow you. In turn, they’ll nab the Y-Letter Box for you.
Once you’re Mini-Mario Toys reach your location via the conveyor belt, head toward the Mini-Mario Toy Chest. The chest will automatically open up and your tiny companions will hop into it, one by one. Once they’re all inside, press the X/Y button to grab the chest. After that, you’ll receive a fabulous victory animation.
Eureka! You’ve completed your first Mini-Mario Level. Now with all six levels and this one finished, we can give Donkey Kong a great thrashing for his crimes!
Mario Toy Company – Donkey Kong Boss Fight |
||
As they say, “It’s on like Donkey Kong!” Time to give this ape a thrashing by using everything we’ve learned from the previous levels. Before we delve into how to defeat this ape, we want to break down the image briefly. Firstly, the Mini-Mario Toy Cards serve as Mario’s lives in the fight while the DK cards serve as Donkey Kong’s lives. This means you must harm Donkey Kong four times to win. You’ll do so by grabbing the red, yellow, and blue trash cans that appear on the screen. Then, you’ll use the platforms shown above to reach Donkey Kong. Once you’re in perfect throwing range, toss those trash cans at Donkey Kong to inflict damage on him. After you land a successful hit, Donkey Kong will pull the chain next to him. This will cause numerous objects to fall from the top of the screen. When that happens, use Mario’s Handstand Jump position to avoid harm. After the items stop appearing, Donkey Kong will activate one of the switches. This will cause the current trash can to disappear and a new one to pop up elsewhere. Fortunately, if you have one of the trash cans in your possession, it won’t disappear. Continue using your jumping, handstands, grabbing, dodging, and throwing techniques during your battle with Donkey Kong. As you continue to harm him, Donkey Kong ramps up the pace. As long as you stick to these methods, you’ll win. |
After you beat Donkey Kong, he’ll moan as typical apes do. Then, he grabs his sack of Mini-Mario Toys and flees to the Donkey Kong Jungle level. As one can expect, Mario chases after him. This wraps up this portion of the game.
