Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines – Season 1 Episode 4 Recap & Review

When You Stare into a Losing Heroine, the Losing Heroine Stares Back into You

Episode 4 of Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines begins with Komari confessing her feelings to Shintaro, like in episode 3. Shintaro asks Komari to give him time to ponder everything. Komari departs and Koto confronts Shintaro. Koto argues Shintaro should’ve dumped Komari, but Shintaro says this is between Komari and himself.

Koto slaps Shintaro and heads off somewhere. Kazuhiko visits the restroom to ponder Shintaro, Koto, and Komari’s situation. Shintaro arrives, pulls Kazuhiko aside, and asks Kazuhiko for advice. Kazuhiko believes this is all a misunderstanding and suggests Shintaro discuss things with Koto. Then, Anna arrives and tells Kazuhiko and Shintaro Koto grabbed her belongings and left somewhere.

Shintaro finds Koto sitting on a bridge. Shintaro discusses his confession to Koto on Christmas. He thought Koto turned him down, and Koto reminded him of the words he shared with her during that time. Koto tells Shintaro she’s wanted him and her to become a romantic couple. Kazuhiko asks Anna to accompany him somewhere so Koto and Shintaro can have alone time.

While Anna and Kazuhiko go for a walk, Anna asks Kazuhiko to let go of her hand. Anna notices Kazuhiko’s blushing and wonders if he wants to confess his feelings to her. Anna teases Kazuhiko about it, telling him she’d reject him. Eventually, Kazuhiko regroups with Komari. Komari tells Kazuhiko that Shintaro turned her down.

Komari asks Shintaro to leave her alone. Kazuhiko ponders this dilemma at an undisclosed location and says he’ll focus his efforts on his writings. Shintaro asks Komari about her write-up the following day. Shintaro promises to assist Komari in learning how to use the Lit Icon Website. Komari approaches Koto about her story and the club. She also promises Koto she doesn’t need to worry about Komari.

Komari and Koto hug things out. At school, Lemon approaches Kazuhiko about his story and Kazuhiko shows Lemon what he has finished so far. He promises to upload Lemon’s picture diary for her. Later, Kazuhiko eavesdrops on several female students’ gossip about him and Anna.

After that, Kazuhiko and Anna visit their usual staircase meet-up area. There, Anna asks Kazuhiko if he likes the meal she made him today. Kazuhiko says he does. He also says it’s worth the remaining balance of her debt to him. Additionally, Kazuhiko argues it’d be best if they didn’t see each other as often. Kazuhiko tells Anna why this is the best decision.

Anna asks Kazuhiko to elaborate more. Kazuhiko doesn’t give Anna the best response, so Anna promises not to talk to Kauzhiko anymore. Lemon confronts Kazuhiko at school. She wonders if Kazuhiko and Anna aren’t on proper terms. She tells Kazuhiko to discuss things with Anna more. Kazuhiko visits the Literature Club and bumps into Anna there.

Kazuhiko tells Anna he had fun with her and Anna leaves to meet up with her friends. Kazuhiko eats lunch alone at a staircase and Komari arrives. He tells Komari he and Anna never were a couple even if things appeared that way. Kazuhiko visits a water foundation and Sosuke greets him. Sosuke and Kazuhiko head to an undisclosed area.

He informs Kazuhiko about rumors he’s heard about Kazuhiko and Anna. Sosuke wants to support Anna. Kazuhiko tells Sosuke Anna likes him. Anna arrives and tells Kazuhiko she’s here because Komari told her Kazuhiko was being bullied. Sosuke apologizes and tells Anna he wants her to find someone better than him.

Kazuhiko confronts Sosuke and shares his two-sense on Sosuke and Anna’s predicament. Anna interrupts their argument and tells Sosuke she still loves him. She tells Sosuke to be with Karen. Anna promises she’ll find someone else to love when she’s ready to move on. Anna has Kazuhiko and Sosuke apologize to each other. Then, we cut away to Amanatsu informing her class that Summer Vacation is on the horizon.

Then, we see Kazuhiko, Lemon, Anna, and Komari discussing Summer Vacation at the staircase. Komari asks Lemon to give her running lessons, allowing Kazuhiko and Anna to have alone time. On the roof, Kazuhiko asks Anna if he can be her friend. Anna laughs. She thought Kazuhiko was confessing his feelings to her.

The episode ends with Anna accepting Kazuhiko’s request.

The Episode Review

Well, Kazuhiko can wear the “losing hero” badge with honor after this episode’s finale. As many anticipated, Komari didn’t get the romantic outcome she was hoping for. This episode paired Koto and Shintaro up instead. The previous episodes set up the chemistry between those two swimmingly. However, some fans may argue that the drama surrounding that trio felt rushed.

Nevertheless, it was great seeing Komari and Koto hug it out. It shows that Komari isn’t a sore loser like some people who get rejected in reality. That aside, this episode had wonderful tension between Sosuke, Kazuhiko, and Anna’s characters. From the irritating gossip to the dramatic arguments, fans will appreciate the show’s staff for portraying the characters’ emotions in a colorful, genuine light.

Makeine: Too Many Losing Heroines continues to be one of the best rom-coms to air this season. It has its emotional highs and contains material fans can connect with. Although matters may look grim for Kazuhiko on the relationship front, there’s hope for him to net himself a significant other by the series’s conclusion.

Whether his future girlfriend ends up being Anna, Lemon, or Komari, begs to be seen.
