Law Vs Justice
Episode 8 i.e. the season finale of Maamla Legal Hai starts with a crime case being reported from Patparganj wherein a woman was killed after three goons tried to steal from her. Tyagi releases a video, criticising the crime and stating that no lawyers from the Patparganj Bar Association will represent the criminals.
Munshiji asks Advocate PP to take on the case and represent the cop in the murder case. Advocate PP refuses to take part in the case as he knew the cop was corrupt. Munshiji forces Advocate PP to take on the case and asks him to take Ananya as well as the interns’ help. Meanwhile, Tyagi and Mintu discuss how his dreams of being an Attorney General were crushed because he did not win the election.
Tyagi reveals how he did not want to be tied down but Mintu argues that he would never get a chance like this again. Mintu asks Tyagi to meet Judge Ghosh and discuss the issue. Meanwhile, Advocate PP, Ananya and the interns get together to file a foolproof chargesheet against the criminals. Ananya is shocked to learn that they, the prosecution lawyers were filing a complaint instead of the police.
During his meeting with Judge Ghosh, Tyagi realised how the Judiciary had no respect or value as cases from the Supreme Court were often sent to the High and the Supreme Court. Tyagi asks Ghosh about the kick that came from being a judge but the latter claims that being a judge was not something he should look forward to.
In their room, the team discusses the different charges that would apply to the criminals who committed the murder. Tyagi meets Judge Bainsla at the high court and tells her that he was offered a job as a judge. Bainsla learns that Tyagi is going to turn down the offer of being a judge and asks him to sit down with her for a hearing.
During the hearing, Tyagi learns how the Judge held immense respect, from the lawyers as well as the victim and realises that the main “kick” out of being a judge was not from the pay or the reputation but from the look in the victim’s eyes moments before the verdict is announced. Bainsla tells Tyagi that he does not need to be a good man to become a judge but he needs to be a good man after becoming a judge.
Tyagi takes her advice and finally wears the bracelet given to him by his father. Advocate PP learns that the dead body had no DNA of one of the three culprits – Raju. As the murder weapon was missing, the forensic expert suggested that they make up false evidence using the victim’s blood to incriminate Raju.
Ananya denies having any part in incriminating a man who could be innocent and leaves the team. Outside the police station, Raju’s mother meets Ananya and asks for her help. She tells Ananya that her younger son had hidden the murder weapon away in their house when the police showed up to arrest Raju. Ananya realises that she was wrong about Raju being innocent and takes the murder weapon to Advocate PP.
She refuses to let him know how she found the weapon and asks the team to file a chargesheet against him. Ananya leaves the office dejected but Advocate PP stops her. He talks to her about Kanmailya, a local ear-wax cleaner whose ancestral property had been confiscated. Advocate PP asks Ananya to take on Kanmailiya’s case as her first client and she happily agrees to do so.
How does Maamla Legal Hai end?
That night, Tyagi tells Sujata that she will finally be sitting in his chamber under Munshiji’s guidance. Mintu tells the interns – Law and Order that they were promoted to being associates and would be allowed to hire 1 intern each. Mintu is shocked to learn that he was now the acting President of the Bar Association in Phorey’s absence.
The episode ends with Tyagi signing the papers and taking on the job of a judge as all the lawyers and other people in Patparganj start bowing down to him in respect.
The Episode Review
The show has been a feel-good comedy that is not only enjoyable but retrospective as well. In a world full of desperate and exploitative lawyers, we need an Ananya who is simple-minded and hopes to help people using her voice and her education. The way she refuses to make up false evidence, worrying that an innocent will be put behind bars in commendable.
On the other hand, Tyagi finally sees the world through a judge’s eyes and realises how his father was right in asking him to have some patience and understanding. The show ended with Tyagi taking up the position of a lawyer, but I wonder how Mintu ended up becoming the acting President of the Bar Association when it was Phorey who won the elections. I guess that could be one plot hole in this overall amazingly written show.
