Episode 5 of Maamla Legal Hai starts with Ananya helping a client get married in Family Court. Sujata tells the officer in charge that Ananya was doing it for free as she did not have her first case yet. The groom, Kishore tells Ananaya that his bride is in prison and has decided against getting married to him.
Meanwhile, Tyagi prepares his interns whom he calls Law and Order to handle any outbursts he would have in the days leading up to the Presidential Elections of the Bar Council. Just then, Mintu learns that Tyagi’s father – Justice Tyagi was visiting Tyagi’s house which leaves Tyagi shocked.
At the same time, Ananya visits the bride and learns from the prison warden that the prisoners are not allowed to stay outside the prison overnight even if they are getting married. The woman also tells Ananya that Rajjo could go to Patparganj Court to register her marriage as per the law but she had to come back to the prison in an hour.
Ananya meets Rajjo and learns that she wants to get married in the prison temple itself because her main goal is having sex as opposed to just getting married. Ananya and Sujata also learn that Rajjo can not get parole which means she has to get married in the District Court and be back in the prison in an hour.
Ananya tries to talk to Rajjo and finally learns that Rajjo’s true motive behind getting married was that she wanted to have a baby. Rajjo states that she will raise the child on her own in the prison just like another inmate was raising her son. Since she would be released in her late 40s, Rajjo would not be able to start her family and wants to do it now.
At Tyagi’s house, it is clear that Justice Tyagi and Tyagi have some tension. Justice Tyagi tells his son that he was afraid about the path he had chosen. He gives Tyagi a bracelet handed to him by his colleague. Justice Tyagi tells his son that the bracelet will help him rethink his decisions and give him some patience.
Tyagi argues with his father and calls him out for not taking care of him. He accuses Justice Tyagi of not sending him to an English-medium school or for not helping him when he was trying to become a lawyer. Tyagi states that he was disappointed in his father for not extending him the same privileges that his colleagues had handed over to their children who were owners of big businesses and law firms.
The argument gets out of hand and Tyagi tells his father that he will never cause Justice Tyagi’s defamation in anything he does because the world did not know that they were father and son anyway. At the same time, Ananya and Sujata try to reason with the prison warden for her to allow Rajjo to have coitus with her to-be husband.
The warden tells the two advocates that she would not allow it as the prison was on a tight budget which would be ruined in the care of a pregnant prisoner. Ananya and Sujata realise that the only way to help Lajjo would be by doing something that is not in the books.
Later that afternoon, Justice Tyagi leaves for his own house and tells Tyagi that the reason why he didn’t help his son with all the connections he had was because he wanted to see Tyagi make it big on his own.
At the same time, Sujata calls Tyagi for help and he agrees. The group at Patparganj all prepare for the marriage of Lajjo and Kishore. The lawyers mention Article 26 and state that Lajjo needed to dress up according to her culture before she got married. Sujata and Ananya take Lajjo to the restroom to get her dressed but Kishore is sent inside in secret.
Lajjo and Kishore are having sex in the restroom when the female cop accompanying Lajjo finds out. She asks Lajjo to stop and leave the restroom immediately but Ananya warns her, threatening to file a lawsuit against the police officer. Lajjo and Kishore finally leave the restroom after having coitus and the two are married off legally.
Ananya thanks Sujata for taking Tyagi’s help who made all of this possible for them. The episode ends with Tyagi putting the bracelet his father gave him in a drawer.
The Episode Review
The dynamics between Tyagi and his father are complicated but that is the case for many father-son duos in India. The relationship between a man and his son is usually strained but the way Tyagi expresses his dissatisfaction with his father for not using his connections to help him advance his career is something that happens in many families.
Justice Tyagi’s response to his son also shows the reason why many fathers want to see their children make it out in the real world on their own merit instead of using nepotistic connections.
This episode was so entertaining to watch. The way Lajjo, a criminal is trying to exercise her right to procreation and does not mind giving birth to a child and raising the baby from prison shows how much she prioritises motherhood over the fact that she is marrying a good-for-nothing man like Kishore.
