Love Storiyaan is Amazon Prime’s latest docuseries produced by Bollywood mogul, Karan Johar. With India’s diversity that spans states, religion, class and caste, it looks at the equally diverse love stories that have come out of this country. In an anthology format, each episode looks at a different couple like radio jockeys, single moms, journalists, trans people, immigrants and activists.

It takes the standardized docudrama template and gives it an emotional and wholesome touch. The couples involved, their families, friends, and even those against, it is a feat how everyone has been convinced to give their side of the story, to give us the whole picture. It also takes advantage of their various backgrounds to give us some beautiful visuals that are quintessential Indian.

On top of it, Love Storiyaan also has taken up the social responsibility to address some ongoing issues that are prevalent in India and even in the world for that matter. Each couple is deliberately selected to give a voice to people of those communities, and their specific problems and give hope to those who are down. And to make sure that justice is done, each episode has a different director who we assume most likely comes from a similar background as the couple in the spotlight.

Sure there are some teething problems technically. Some of the stylistic choices are over the top and don’t pay off. There is repetition and the recreation of the couples’ past is oddly inserted. In fact, the interviews of the people involved are so engaging that it is enough to just watch them talk and embark on a mini mission for Love Storiyaan.

The Prime documentary has heart and emphasizes that life is not perfect, not every relationship may be accepted, and different people will have different problems that we may possibly never be able to fully understand. But it gives hope and is the perfect Valentine’s Day release.

Those who cry in every melodramatic movie may think twice about watching it, but Love Storiyaan is worth the tears. It is not just gathering a bunch of different people and making them talk about their lives. It documents the trajectory of their journeys from where they have begun to the present which in most cases is not perfect.
