If you have recently seen Unlocked: A Jail Experiment, a documentary series currently streaming on Netflix, you will have heard of the detention facility at Little Rock – the Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility.
In the documentary, the inmates of Unit H take part in a unique experiment devised by Sheriff Eric Higgins.
Instead of being locked up in their cells 23 hours a day, which was the norm, the inmates have the freedom to move around their prison unit. Not only that but they can do so without deputies on guard and watching their every move.
This is part of Higgins’ plan to make the facility a safer place for everybody. It’s understandably risky but with cameras monitoring the inmates’ movements, the deputies can still keep an eye on what everybody is doing.
After watching the documentary, you might be interested in learning more about the prison featured in the programme. If so, we have some information for you below.
Pulaski County Regional Detention Facility
The detention facility is located at 3201 West Roosevelt Road, Little Rock, Arkansas 72204. It opened in 1994 and is now Arkansas’s largest county detention facility, housing more than 1,200 detainees daily.
As stated here, the centre is the only long-term detention facility in Pulaski County, supporting twelve law enforcement agencies and thirty-three state and local courts.
A facility of this size requires multiple divisions and sections. These include:
Court Liaison Office – The office is responsible for all communications between the facility and over 30 District, Circuit, and Federal Courts.
Detention Training Division – Where basic training is given to every new employee.
Housing and Security – Personnel in this department are responsible for the immediate care and supervision of inmates.
Inmate Services – This section coordinates with community-based programs to bring self-help programs to the inmates.
More information about the facility’s various sections can be found here.
How can I get a job at Pulaski County Detention Center?
If the Netflix documentary inspired you to get involved in the work at the facility, you can find application forms here.
How do I contact a Pulaski County inmate?
If you know somebody incarcerated at the prison, it’s possible to leave them a voicemail. The inmate in question can then give you a call if they so choose. You will need to verify your identity when you initiate communication with an inmate, so you will need to have a valid reason for calling. Click here for more information.
Can I visit the Pulaski County Detention Center?
Visitation is possible but we hope you only get a day pass and not a season ticket, if you know what we mean! More information can be found here.
