Life & Beth – Season 2 Episode 2 “Who Dat” Recap & Review

Who Dat

We leave the Big Apple for a few episodes, starting with the second episode of this season of the Hulu show. Life & Beth Season 2 Episode 2 kicks off on a high note, too. We knew John had plans to marry Beth, so it opens with him waking her up in bed and proposing to her.

The following scene takes place on Maya’s porch, discussing the event among Maya, her son, Maya’s boyfriend, Beth, and John. Maya mentions that she is headed to New Orleans for a trip to see family and go to the Essence Festival. Beth and John decide, why don’t they just get married next week in New Orleans?

In a comedic way, Maya does not want all her white friends to go. She is flying solo down to New Orleans to celebrate black culture, and now all the white people in her life are hijacking her trip because Beth and John decided to just rush things and get married.

Beth asks her friends Jess and Jen to please be on their best behavior on the trip down to New Orleans, but of course that is never the case. Jess, an unhappily married woman, meets a cop in the alleyway and starts to hook up with him the night before the wedding.

John’s dad arrives for the wedding and keeps his distance of sorts from Beth, as it is not said but implied that he disagrees with his son marrying Beth in such a quick way. He’s never met Beth, and he can’t seem to gauge her.

Beth gets a wedding planner of sorts to help with the quick ceremony she and John want to have. She’s highly eccentric, and she had Beth get dressed for her wedding in a room without any mirrors in it. This sets up Beth’s horrendous makeup job on the day of their wedding.

Beth’s sister, Ann, arrives at the ceremony after a phone fight over her and John’s wedding plans. Ann seems to be going through something that we can’t gauge this early in the season. She is having issues leaving her home, like a mental block of sorts. Beth has also invited her ex-boyfriend Matt to the event. At the end of Life & Beth Season 2 Episode 2, he ends up having a wild night that trickles into episode 3; more on that shortly.

The Episode Review

There is no crazy miscue or anything that one would be expecting from the episode; Beth and John get married, say ‘I do’ and get a traditional parade through the streets of the French Quarter in New Orleans, and roll credits. The episode paid homage to the late great musician, Jimmy Buffet, who has a cameo in the episode as a street performer. Buffet died last year, possibly not long after he filmed his cameo in this episode.

With eight episodes to go, you gotta wonder how this is all going to pan out in this season. Kicking off a season with a wedding could make for some interesting plotlines later on. Regardless, it’s cool to see the gang outside of New York City in a new town. New Orleans is a city like no other, and despite Life & Beth Season 2 Episode 2 being thirty minutes long, this chapter takes its time to really give you the vibe of the great city.
