A delightful movie that spreads plenty of cheer
Life throws its curveballs at every stage, whether you’re a child or an adult. At each stage in life, we face obstacles and societal pressure. In such cases, we need someone to guide us and support us for it is easy to lose oneself.
It starts right at school. Being a teenager is an eventful stage but it all begins in one’s tweens where you see other children grow faster and different that what you have in mind.
There are quite a handful films which trace the tweens and teenage stage of one’s life. The latest movie to see this issue and tackle it beautifully is Leo. The movie focuses on an aging talking lizard who imparts helpful knowledge to fifth graders.
Each student has to take home a class pet on the weekend and everyone chooses Leo. Each student finds a friend in Leo.
Leo hears that lizards die at the age of 75. Since he has a year to live, he wants to get out of the glass cage and live a life like a wild creature. His only way to do that is to go home with each kid on the weekend. He talks to them and helps them get to terms with their reality. He encourages them to take a lead in their lives.
The children, who are on a cusp of change, are worried when their teacher Ms Salinas goes on maternity leave. The new substitute teacher, Ms Malkins, is bitter, has outdated teaching methods and does not understand the students’ needs. They talk to Leo about their academic problems and gain advice.
But Leo tells each kid to keep their conversations and Leo’s reality a secret. Squirtle is definitely not happy with the attention to Leo. He barely knows how to communicate without being a cynic. His attempts to bond with the students are met with failures.
As the movie progresses, we see how Leo’s advice changed the lives of those fifth grade students. The students found a solace in him which they couldn’t find in their new substitute teacher or their parents. But all good things eventually face an obstacle. And so does Leo and his friendship with the kids.
Leo is perfect to watch with the kids and perhaps it will give them a lesson they did not know they needed. Tweens and teens are not so easy ages to tackle and one sometimes needs guiding support. Leo is a beautiful film and well worth a watch.
