Lawmen: Bass Reeves charts the story of the first African American Deputy U.S. Marshal west of the Mississippi River. His name is Bass Reeves (David Oyelowo), and he’s a former slave who takes a job as a Deputy Marshal when the farm he lives on with his wife, Jennie (Lauren E. Banks), gets infested by locusts and leads them to burn it down and start again. Reeves teams up with fellow Deputy Marshal, Sherrill Lynn (Dennis Quaid), and the two men clash due to their different outlooks on the world.

Bass Reeves escapes his chains and his life as a slave in search of a better life, but gets caught up in all sorts of trouble, as he’s forced to make a big sacrifice. 10 years later, he’s living on a farm with his wife, Jennie, when an opportunity arises to be a Deputy Marshal. He takes the job, and his first assignment is to accompany fellow Marshal, Sherrill Lynn on a mission to bring down the man who killed his former colleague.
