Lauren Hibberd explores her pain on this release, confirming to us that she’s broken. The singer/songwriter shows she’s a lyric writer with insight too, opting for words drenched in melancholy, though she has the power to break the cycle. On Girlfriend Material she sings with authority, lashing at the world in anger and repentance, starting confrontations that are valid.

The music is generous with its hooks as Hibberd shows she has grown as a musician and lyricist. The lyrics are simple at times, but at moments they flood the music like a wave of intelligence. She’s an intelligent songstress, there’s no doubting that, and on this album, she manages to connect with the people.

‘Mary’ is an upbeat song with layers of envy. Hibberd sings confidently, and the hooks are brilliantly implemented. There is a stark contrast in tone.

‘Happy For You’ starts with Hibberd’s angelic vocals, and then the chorus bursts with intensity. It’s another pessimistic note for the world.

‘Anti-Fragile’ is an acoustic song. A sad song that explores the agony Hibberd feels, and it shows the singer’s diverse output. Lyrically, it’s a story-driven masterclass, worthy of attention.

‘Girlfriend Material’ has poppy elements, showing anger, and the song has hooks galore. Hibberd sings angrily, showcasing her feelings and expressions. She’s confident here, smacking the song with authority.

Lauren Hibberd dazzles on this release, putting herself out there and making her mark.
