Everyone Deserves a Second Chance to Make Themselves Happy
The final episode of Last Twilight starts three years after Day and Mhok’s breakup. Day is adjusting to living as a blind person, including graduating from the university and setting up his bookshop. Day is also a motivational speaker, and his friend On comes to one of his sessions. He compliments him for his eloquence and suggests that he write a book.
However, Day says writing is difficult since he has to speak to the computer and then recheck. On asks him to bring back someone to help him write, but Day thinks that he might have already moved on since it has been three years.
What happens to Mhok and Day?
The primary reason that Day develops feelings for Mhok is because he never treated him differently, which makes Day feel normal despite losing his sight. However, when they start dating Mhok’s care for Day deepens, and he worries about him more than when he was his caregiver. Mhok is afraid of leaving him alone, so when he gets his big break to take a sous chef job in Singha’s new Branch in Hawaii, Mhok lies to Day, saying he failed the recruitment.
It turns out that Mhok turned down the opportunity of a lifetime so he could stay close to Day and take care of him. When Day fights about the permanent employment contract, he is upset that Mhok has become one of those who pity him. Mhok explains that he is scared to leave him alone since his sister died when he failed to pick up his call. How will he be certain that Day will always be safe if he is not there to care for him? Regardless, Day asks for a breakup.
Mhok returns from Hawaii three years later for Phojai and Night’s wedding. Day has already graduated from the university and is running a bookshop. The first time Mhok sees him again is at the mall, where Phojai and Night are trying on their wedding dress and suits. Mhok helps take Day to the cab waiting outside, and Day feels that it might be Mhok as we see flashes of the times they walked together with Day holding onto Mhok’s hand. Mhok’s voice confirms his suspicion after sending him to the taxi, but the taxi driver drives away before they can talk.
Mhok learns that Day is running a bookshop and heads there after meeting with Night and Phojai. Although he does not talk after entering the bookshop, Day recognises the scent of the perfume he bought. Mhok starts flirting with Day and asks him for a second chance, but Day does not respond. Day turns Mhok down during the wedding and asks him to return to the States. Mhok reluctantly leaves, and we see him at the airport, ready to board.
Back at the wedding hall, Day talks to his mother about his confusion. How can he give Mhok another chance when he is not sure he will not hinder him from achieving his dream? Will Mhok put his big life chances on hold because of Day? His mother helps him clear the confusion by reminding him that he always wants to be normal, and for normal people, love is unpredictable. Regardless, people choose to take a risk at love, not knowing what will happen but hoping they will be happy with every step they take.
Day decides to give himself a chance and follows Mhok to the airport. However, it seems like he is too late since the plane in Hawaii has already left, and everyone is on board. Night and Phojai drive him back to the wedding hall, and suddenly, Night says he forgot something and asks Day to accompany him. It turns out that Mhok did not leave and is waiting for Day at the wedding hall. He asks Day to dance with him, and at the end of the song, Day apologises for breaking Mhok’s heart twice and asks for a second chance for himself. Mhok agrees to be with Day once again.
Does Day regain his sight?
After his first eye surgery, Day becomes completely blind due to an eye infection from the eye donor. Therefore, he learns to live as a blind person and allows himself to accept help when needed. Eventually, he can do things on his own without needing so much help or supervision. Fortunately, his mother got a call from the eye donation centre three years later during his brother’s wedding. Day goes for his second eye surgery; this time, the surgery works, and he regains his sight.
What happens to Night and Phojai?
Phojai’s life, especially in relationships, has not been easy. Therefore, when Night confesses his love for the first time, Phojai does not give him a chance. Regardless, Night stays by her side, helping her care for her daughter, Poomjai. Eventually, Phojai opens her heart, and they start dating, leading to their wedding. During the wedding, Phojai says everyone deserves a second chance to make themselves happy.
How does Last Twilight End?
After Day regains sight, he and Mhok spend a lot of time together doing things he always wanted, including reading. His favourite book is Last Twilight. They go on dates, participate in the marathon, and play badminton. Mhok takes Day to meet his family during their memorial and asks them not to worry since he now has someone to care for him. Mhok works as a chef, and Day’s mother helps him taste his dishes before introducing them to the hotel.
As the family has a meal together, we learn that Night and Phojai are expecting a child. At the end of the episode, Mhok and Day hike up a mountain, and as they sit at the cliff top, they reminisce about the time they have spent together and promise to love each other forever.
The Episode Review
The final episode of Last Twilight concludes the series’s main and subplots satisfactorily. I like that the ending is not rushed and that the script does not give Day his sight back after the first surgery. It makes the last episodes more meaningful as Day finally accepts his new reality and pushes himself harder to be independent and adjust his mentality. Before, he never accepted help since he felt it would make him seem abnormal, but now he easily asks for and accepts help.
Day’s representation of the hopelessness we feel when something unexpected happens in our lives has been so relatable since the first episode. Throughout the episodes, he taught us the importance of acceptance and adjusting our lives to fit the ever-changing fates. That is why I am torn about the ending when he regains his sight back, but regardless, it is a satisfactory ending since we all wished that he would see again at some point.
The Last Twilight has been an emotional series that has kept us at the edge of our seats with each episode and offered surprising turns that kept us glued to the very end. Jimmy and Sea continue to highlight their prowess and undeniable chemistry in emotional slow-burn romance dramas, and we cannot wait to see what they will bring us next.
