Keeping in mind the words of Dwight Schrute, (The Office U.S.) “Nostalgia is truly one of the greatest human weaknesses,” comes a show set in the ‘70s which evokes all the nostalgia one needs.

Set on the humble coast of Perth, Australia this dramedy narrates the story of three tightly-knit families and the characters connected to them during a time considered to be the end of the Space Age. The Space Age started in 1957 with the launch of the Russian space satellite, Sputnik 1 and is still continuing, even to the present day.

Last Days of the Space Age is a short, sweet and emotional drama that tries to connect the lives of common people with space exploration as a power strike threatens to plunge Perth into darkness, while the city hosts the iconic Miss Universe pageant.

Coincidentally, the US space station, Skylab, crashes just beyond the city’s suburbs making this a significant moment in history for the people living on the coast.

The show tries its best to represent the ‘70s and does a good job at representing the various minorities like homosexuals and the Aboriginal community in the best possible way. The show presents life lessons in a way that is not too preachy, however this makes for a somewhat boring watch at times too.

Last Days of the Space Age is a melodrama at best with the right amount of romance, comedy, and suspense. We see really patriarchal ideologies that are presented most naturally with some characters which is accurate for the time the show is set in. The show does end on an open-ended note leaving room for a possible sequel in the future.

Some plot points are not explored in great detail which makes one wonder if the makers intended to do so in hopes that this one will be renewed for another season. The show tries to build sensitivity towards the Aboriginals, a community which does not have a lot of representation in TV Shows or films at present.

There’s also a wide range of characters that have their respective storylines showcased over the course of the eight short episodes. While this is a good thing, it sticks out like a sore thumb because none of them are explored to their full potential.

The show, despite being presented as a space exploration drama with Sci-fi elements, is a melodrama at its heart. The characters on Last Days of the Space Age grow on you towards the end making this an enjoyable slow burn.
