It’s Still Your Beach
Episode 6 of Last Days of the Space Age titled “It’s Still Your Beach” starts with Tilly talking to the local radio station about the location of Skylabs crash. Judy asks Tilly and Mia to get ready for school instead. Mia throws a fit about starting a job to support the family when Judy agrees to give Mia’s interest a try. Bilya practices his dance moves with Eileen.
Eileen wonders what Rocoa would make of the fact that a black kid like Bilya was taking Poppy out on the school dance. Eileen practices her speech for the radio interview on History. Bilya asks her to come clean about her race but Eileen dismisses his suggestion. Sandy is upset about the fact that they were robbed of the money as well as the chance to meet their son.
Lam tries to reassure her and checks up on Jono. He is upset when he finds Jono painting his face like David Bowie. The pageant organizer gets upset with Yvgney because Svetlana has been missing the events. She threatens to have her disqualified. Svetlana asks Yvgeny to trust her as she seeks Mick’s help with the matter.
Judy tells Tony that Mia is going to work with her and asks him to check up on Tilly who was locked inside the bathroom. Mia brings out a package which was left outside. The package is from George’s family with a note for Tony. He is shocked to learn that George has died. Tony notices that Tilly is getting cynical about Skylab crashing. He asks her to join him as they look for a space to make their shelter in the event of a crash.
On the other hand, at the Power Supply Factory, Mia picks the lock to Wayne’s office and helps Judy and Fran find a clue to what Wayne is up to. They find a contract written in Japanese and try to find a translator to figure out what he is upto. Together, Tony and Tilly are digging up a hole. Mick takes Yvgeny and Svetlana to Sandy who can help her with her ball gown.
Sandy helps fix Svetlana’s dress while Lam goes out to the man – Mr Teo, looking for more information on Van. Lam calls Teo out for conning them out of cash. He asks Lam to wait while asking him to look out for the family he has remaining. Fran, on the other hand, brings in a Japanese man, asking him to read the contract.
The man reveals that Wayne had sold the power supply factory to a Japanese buyer. Before the event that night, Svetlana tells Mick that she is going to defect her Russian citizenship and wants to stay back in Australia. Jono tells Lam that he wants to be a musician like David Bowie.
Lam tries to make Jono see his true potential and asks him to secure a good job in medicine so he can look after them when they are old. He adds that Jono is their only son, hinting that Van would not be returning. Eileen makes it to the radio interview as Bilya sits with her. The interview gets awkward when the host – Scott brings up her race.
Eileen stands up for herself and he race, claiming that she was a Binjareb Noongar woman even after spending 20 years in Perth. She brings up all the struggles of the people from her race and shares her story. Jono and his family as well as the Bissett family listen to Eileen’s story and are touched. She brings up the different nuclear tests that happened with her husband in Maralinga.
Tony is shocked to hear the mention of the test as Eileen narrates how her husband died due to the test. Eileen shares how she rebuilt her life all over again as a single mother but eventually lost her kids while trying to fit in. She reveals that she finally feels free after coming to terms with her Aboriginal racial identity.
Bilya is proud of Eileen and the two spend the night gazing at the stars. That night, Tony tells Judy that Gazza was the one who threw the brick at her. He gives Judy the right to do as she pleases with Gazza. Tony then tells Judy how he too was a part of the test during which Eileen’s husband was killed. He breaks into tears as he narrates the horrors of the incident.
The episode ends with Judy asking Tony to face this battle on his terms like she would with Gazza.
The Episode Review
Despite all that happened to Tony in the past, he is still slacking off when it comes to providing for his family. Now that George is dead, he is projecting his emotions in a different place by trying to build a shelter with Tilly when he can open the box that was sent by George’s family.
The show is taking a chaotic turn now that Svetlana has made it clear that she wants to stay back in Perth, to give birth to her child. I can assume that Mick will marry Svetlana to keep his public image as a family man.
I wonder if a follow-up season of this show will include Svetlana teaching Astrophysics in school so aspiring students will get the support they need. Shockingly, Gazza was the one who tried to kill Judy and I wonder what Tony will do now that it was his friend who attacked his wife all along.
