Last Days of the Space Age — Season 1 Episode 6 Recap & Review

It’s Still Your Beach

Episode 6 of Last Days of the Space Age titled “It’s Still Your Beach” starts with Judy holding up a brave face as she is at the coroner’s office, putting Bob to rest. She tries to hold herself up at the memorial service for her late father. The Bissett family discuss what they would like to do with Bob’s ashes and Tilly suggests that they could release it in the sea.

Mia refuses to do it, after still being shattered from the incident. Eileen tries to get Judy to emote but she refuses to shed a tear. Fran offers Judy a drink and tries to calm her down. Mick talks to Judy about firing Tony and points out how Judy is trying her best to look like she is in control. The man who Bob asked to fix Mia’s surfboard hands her the board. He asks Mia to get back to surfing soon, in honour of her late grandfather.

George shows up there to talk to Tony and causes a scene. Tony pushes George away which causes him to fall. Mick takes George away but the latter warns to come back for Tony.

At home, Judy asks why Tony pushed George. Tony lies to Judy and claims that he does not know the man. Eileen is having a hard time dealing with Bob’s death as she locks the door to his caravan. Mia goes inside the caravan after Eileen has left and sleeps in Bob’s bed. That night, Mick joins Svetlana for her doctor’s appointment.

The doctor reveals that she is pregnant which leaves her shocked. Outside, Svetlana tells Mick that she will not be able to fit into her pageant dresses now that she is six weeks pregnant. The next morning, Bilya checks up on his grandmother. Meanwhile, Tilly is trying to determine the location where Skylab would crash.

Jono’s father – Lam helps her find the solution to the mathematical problem. On the other hand, the pageant organisers start getting picky about Svetlana’s weight. Yvgeny asks Svetlana to work out and eat according to his suggestion. Sandy learns that the person who took the money from Bob in exchange for finding their son was a liar. She gets worried about the $5000 she gave Bob to find Van.

On the other hand, Lam and Tilly work together to find the location of Skylab’s crash. Yvgeny talks to the pageant organizer and wins her over. He tries to get her to get Svetlana to win. The woman argues that Svetlana will have to work on her weight. At the same time, Yvgeny learns that Svetlana has visited a family hospital and gets upset.

Eileen invites a relative who casts a spell to cleanse the house to free it from spirits. Eileen casts the ritual inside Bob’s caravan which Judy finds odd. That night, Judy is cleaning out the caravan when Tilly shows up there. She claims that Skylabs will be crashing right where the caravan is parked. Judy dismisses her but Tilly states that she needs to tell everyone as their house would be destroyed after the crash.

Judy asks Tony about George but Tony claims that Judy was trying to divert her attention to other things and had not taken a moment to grieve her late father. He goes inside the house and finds unopened condolence letters. In the letter, he finds a note from Gazza and learns that the person who threw a brick at his car to threaten Judy was Gazza after all.

The next morning, Mia causes a fuss about Bob’s caravan being sold. She states that she will never surf again now that he is gone. Judy reminds Mia of the stories from her childhood as a surfer. Among Bob’s belongings, Mia finds a photo of him and Eileen. Judy is touched to learn about Eileen and Bob and invites her to the beach as the Bissett family would lay his ashes to rest.

That evening, Judy and Eileen put Bob’s ashes in the sand while Mia gets on her surfboard and sprinkles them in the water. The episode ends with Judy finally breaking down in Eileen’s arms, Mia surfs back to the shore.

The Episode Review

The episode was an emotional one as we saw Judy holding her head high and trying to be in control as she breaks down eventually when she is saturated. I loved how she embraced Bob and Eileen’s relationship which makes me wish they had told Judy all about it sooner to ensure they could have embraced their feelings for each other before his death.

While I am upset that Tilly was the only one worrying about space travel, I am glad to see that Lam is helping her. He is being the partner that she wished Jono to be. If the show is ever renewed for a new season, I will look forward to seeing Lam in school as he teacher linear regression to his students.
