La Palma – Season 1 Episode 4 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Safe Spot

The final episode of La Palma starts at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The wave researcher finds a possible safe spot at Tenerife, with data showing a 50% chance of surviving a tsunami no matter how high it gets there.

What happens to Jennifer, Sara, Charlie, and Tobias?

Jennifer, Sara, and Tobias make it to the airport and receive four wristbands to get on the plane. Before they board, Sara notices Charlie, and she decides to go back for her. She promises Jennifer that she will make it on the plane. Jennifer and Tobias are first on the plane while Sara is still out searching for Charlie. They find each other, but Charlie does not have a wristband. Sara decides to give up her father’s band. Since Sara does not make it to the plane, Jennifer and Tobias decide to leave the plane to look for her. Meanwhile, Sara and Charlie manage to board the plane.

Sara calls Jennifer to update her that they are on the plane and it is almost taking off, but she is shocked to realise that they are not on it. Jennifer insists that she stay on the plane. Charlie gets the notification about a safe spot and shares it with Jennifer. Tobias helps her find the spot from the maps in his drawing book. An airport attendant drives Jennifer, Tobias, and several people stranded at the airport to a safe spot.

The waves hit before the plane could take off, but both Sara and Charlie survived. Jennifer and Tobias reconnect with Fredrick at the safe spot. Sara and Charlie are airlifted to the safe spot where the government has set up a relief cam,p and she is reunited with her family.

What happens to Fredrick and Marie?

Marie and Fredrick make it to Tenerife just as the mountain starts sliding into the ocean. Jens sends Fredrick the safe spot coordinates, and he convinces Sara to give up going to the airport and head to the bay. With the waves threatening to submerge them, Marie and Fredrick rush to the safe spot on their boat, and they manage to make it just as the two waves collide and cancel each other out. Marie and Fredrick survive the Tsunami.

What happens to Alvaro and Haukur?

Alvaro and Haukur arrive at the top of the mountain and enjoy a scenic view of the lava eruption. They enjoy a sip of the wine that Haukur had carried with him when, suddenly, the mountain splits and slides towards the ocean. Haukur and Alvaro fall into the lava and die.

Does Jens help survivors get to the safe spot?

When the landslide happens, Jens decides to tell people about the safe spot. Fortunately, he gets the message out, and it is shared widely on social media. Since he went against the ministry’s stand, Jens is let go and stays at home panicked without news until a colleague comes over. She tells him that they have received news that hundreds of people who made it to the safe spot survived, including his sister Jennifer. By banking on the words of the wave researcher and following his gut, Jens manages to save hundreds of people in La Palma.

How does La Palma end?

The episode ends with a voiceover of Erik and Marie while Marie is at sea diving and observing some turtles. The scene seems to be in the future after the tsunami, and he tells her about turtles being older than dinosaurs. Erik says that turtles have survived so long because they know how to notice a forthcoming disaster and escape it. In the end, Erik says that people should listen to nature.

The Episode Review

The finale of the La Palma miniseries provides an acceptable conclusion to this story. The show avoids a tragic ending, particularly for its main characters, leaving viewers, which is a relief. The show also tries to amp up the stakes as the story comes to an end. A few of the scenes are gripping enough to make us regain our interest in the fate of the characters. For a natural disaster thriller, La Palma isn’t memorable, but it only has four episodes, which makes it perfect for binge-watching.
