Beware The Second Beating
Episode 6 of Landman starts with Tommy and Angela arriving outside Monty’s house. Monty’s wife sees the truck at invites Tommy in but insists Angela is not welcome. Tommy offers the truck to Angela so she can drive to Victor’s place, but she insists on using an Uber since she wants to make sure she gets her car back no matter what it takes.
Monty’s wife shows Tommy to the living room where Monty is finishing up a call and her daughter and friends are having a party outside by the pool. Tommy updates Monty about the mafia issue and the crew threatening to not work the wells until the issue is resolved and Monty steps out to make a few calls.
Meanwhile, Rebecca and Nate arrive at the Medina residence to make a settlement with the widows. Isabel and Armando’s wife sign the papers without any hesitation after seeing the 250,000 cheque, but Ariana is sceptical. She decides to make a call to Cooper, but Sheriff Walt answers the phone and she learns that Cooper was badly injured. Ariana leaves the house before signing and rushes to the hospital.
Elsewhere, Angela arrives at Victor’s residence and has to ring the bell since the locks are changed. She is welcomed by lawyers waiting to handle the divorce agreement. Fortunately, she gets the car she was eyeing since it was a gift and signs the agreement. Victor seems unaffected since he is already holding a pool party and already has another woman. Angela takes her Bentley and drives off.
Back at Monty’s house, Nate calls Monty, looking for Tommy, who left his phone in the truck. Nate tells him about Cooper and that he was airlifted to a hospital in town and is undergoing surgery. Nate is heading to the hospital and asks Tommy to call Sheriff Walt for more information. Tommy starts racing towards the hospital and after calling the Sheriff, he learns that Manuel is the possible suspect and the fight is about a girl. Tommy updates Angela, and they plan to meet at the hospital.
Cooper’s surgery is successful, and the family gets to see him in the recovery room. Ainsley and Cooper bicker like they always do with Ainsley blaming Cooper for making her miss the patch party. Dale makes some jokes and then excuses himself, leaving Cooper with Ariana.
Ariana feels responsible, but Cooper assures her that it is not her fault. Manuel and his crew did not beat him up for Elvio, but for their selfish reasons. At the same time, Tommy and Angela arrive at the hospital and Angela freaks out. Tommy asks her to wait outside the room. Cooper confirms that Manuel and his cousin Antonio were waiting in his room when he got home and they beat him to a pulp.
Tommy calls Boss to inform him about the situation and that he will be handling it. Tommy has already liaised with the security team and is surveilling Manuel and the crew responsible. Tommy asks Sheriff to give him a 10-minute head start as he and Dale head to the staff quarters. The cameras are off, and Tommy meets up with Boss and his boys outside Manuel’s trailer.
The minute Manuel opens the door, Tommy ruthlessly rains blows on him and Antonio. Boss and his boys take Antonio out back to torture him until he gives up the names of the rest of the people who put Cooper at the hospital. Sheriff Walt and the police force arrive at Tommy and finish threatening Manuel by telling him that he will put him in jail for at least 30 years, blacklist him from getting employment in any oil company in Texas, and if he ever comes back, Tommy says he will take his life.
The episode ends with Tommy and Dale driving back after handing over Manuel to the police and Boss getting a confession from Antonio of the co-conspirators. Tommy tells Dale that he needs to get Cooper out before it is too late. Tommy feels that Cooper attracts trouble wherever he goes and he is not man enough to handle the trouble in the oil fields.
The Episode Review
The episode completely ignores the emotional cliffhanger the viewers experienced in the last episode. It sweeps the accident, Angela’s shock, and her reaction off and starts over like nothing happened.
The ending scene in the last episode created an opportunity to bring Angela into view of what Tommy has to go through every day at work, but the script failed to build up on that plot. Hopefully, the writers find a way to circle back to it to give viewers a closure on the cliffhanger.
Nothing much happened in this episode and it did not give the audience much to look forward to in the upcoming episode. Probably the only question lingering is how Rebecca and Ariana will deal with the settlement that Ariana failed to sign.
