Kraven the Hunter
Sony’s next Spider-Man spinoff is almost upon us but after the poor critical reaction afforded to Morbius, the last entry in their Spider-Man universe, you can be forgiven for feeling less than unenthusiastic about this upcoming release.
It’s fair to say that the trailer for the movie doesn’t bode well for the finished project as Kraven appears to be more of an animal lover and hunter of hunters than he is the obsessive big game hunter from the comic books. As such, this might be a movie that will disappoint fans of the character.
But as it hasn’t been released yet, let’s hold judgement. It could be another subpar movie akin to Morbius and Venom but then again, it might just surprise everybody and be an entertaining comic book flick!

What is Kraven the Hunter about?
In Marvel comics, Sergei Kravinoff, aka Kraven the Hunter, was a Russian nobleman whose family emigrated to America in 1917. He gained extraordinary abilities after drinking a potion made from various jungle herbs, which gave him an advantage when hunting his prey.
In his quest to become the best game hunter in the world, he turned his attention to Spider-Man. He didn’t get to kill the web-slinger but in one comic book story, he did manage to capture him and bury him alive, before wearing a copy of his costume to prove he had superior abilities.
The new movie is unlikely to feature Spider-Man but other characters from the same universe are set to appear. One of these will be the Rhino, a classic Spider-Man villain who made his first live-action appearance at the end of 2014’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2.
Sony is yet to receive an official plot synopsis so we can’t give you a lot of information about the movie’s story at the moment. But as we have alluded, you shouldn’t expect it to follow the original comic books too closely.
When is Kraven the Hunter being released?
Assuming there will be no delays, Kraven the Hunter will be released into movie theatres on August 30, 2024. It will be available to rent and buy after its theatrical window and will likely get a Netflix release shortly after due to the exclusivity deal Sony struck with the streaming giant back in 2021.
Who is in the cast of Kraven the Hunter?
Kick-Ass star Aaron Taylor- Johnson will play the role of Kraven the Hunter. Previous choices for the part included Adam Driver and Keanu Reeves but after being blown away by Johnson in the Bullet Train trailer, the producers decided to cast him for the part instead.
Also in the cast is Ariana DeBose (West Side Story) as Calypso, Kraven’s love interest and a voodoo priestess who we think will be responsible for giving him his powers. Alessandro Nivola is taking on the role of Rhino, one of the two main antagonists in the movie, with the other being the Foreigner (played by Christopher Abbott), a high-value assassin who is a master of martial arts.
Other cast members include Russell Crowe as Kraven’s father and Fred Hechinger as Dmitri Smerdyakov, Kraven’s brother, also known as the Chameleon, another nemesis of Spider-Man.
Who is the director of Kraven the Hunter?
J.C. Chandor is the director of the movie. His past directing credits include the water-based survival movie All is Lost, the epic crime drama A Most Violent Year, and the action-thriller Triple Frontier which made its debut on Netflix.
As Chandor is an accomplished director, the movie might not be as bad as we are expecting. But check out the trailer below and then let us know your thoughts about the upcoming movie.
