Nefarious Friends For This Sheltered Princess
Episode 5 of Konosuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World Season 3 starts where we left off in episode 4 with Kazuma and his friends responding to the Devil King Army Alert signal. Someone informs Kazuma that he can’t participate in the battle with the army’s troops because he’s not at the required level. Several folks, including Claire, vouch for Kazuma to partake in this battle.
Although Aqua wants to return to Axel, Kazuma insists they assist Claire and the others with the Devil King’s troops. Then, Kazuma appears in the void dimension with Eris. Kazuma tells Eris what happened to him and the others during their battle with the Devil King’s army. Kazuma chased after a lone kobold and the kobold led him to an army of kobolds, who inevitably, exterminated Kazuma.
Then, Eris brings up Kazuma’s groping fiasco with one of her subordinates in the fantasy world. Kazuma belittles Chris in front of Eris, angering Eris. Kazuma apologizes for his actions. Eris forgives Kazuma and asks him to collect the Divine Treasures. Kazuma awakens and Aqua mocks him for perishing by the kobold army’s hands. Next, one of Claire’s generals requests the others to gather the remaining Devil King Army’s bodies.
Then, Kazuma ponders Eris’s remarks about the Divine Treasures. Kazuma realizes Aqua’s treasures she handed out to reincarnations have disappeared. Additionally, Eris relays intel about two Divine Treasures. She says one can summon a powerful monster while another can let its wielder switch bodies with someone within a limited timeframe.
She warns Kazuma that if an evildoer gets their hands on these treasures, it can be game over for the fantasy world he ventures through. Next, Darkness wanders toward Kazuma but several troops surround Darkness, preventing her from comforting Kazuma. Then, Kazuma notices several men carrying Megumin. The men praise Megumin for her effort on the battlefield.
Later, Kazuma carries Megumin through Iris’s castle’s lengthy hallway. Megunin suggests they head to Axel tomorrow. Then, Iris arrives. Iris suggests Kazuma return to the bedroom she assigned to him so he can rest. Megumin and Kazuma visit Kazuma’s quarters. Megumin lies in Kazuma’s bed and understands why he wants to desperately remain here instead of returning to Axel.
Nevertheless, Megumin says she’d prefer it if she, Kazuma, Aqua, and Darkness continued living a bustling life in Axel. Iris enters the room. She tells Kazuma she tried reasoning with Claire to have Kazuma stay at the castle. Kazuma understands Claire’s decision. He tells Iris that he wished he could’ve aided Claire and the others more during the fight.
Megumin interrupts Iris and Kazuma’s discussion and senses a strong magical aura emanating from Iris’s necklace. Iris says this necklace belongs to her older brother, Jatice. She says she’s looking after it until Jatice returns from deployment. Iris removes the necklace and informs Megumin and Kazuma that there’s a weird inscription written on the necklace.
Kazuma reads the inscription and a strange yellow light envelops the room briefly. After that, Megumin learns Kazuma and Iris switched bodies. Later, Megumin, Iris, and Kazuma discuss this development. Although Kazuma recited the inscription’s words again, nothing happened. Kazuma recalls Eris’s remarks about the body-switch Divine Treasure and realizes this is the treasure Eris referred to.
Kazuma tells Megumin and Iris that he and Iris will switch bodies again eventually due to the treasure’s time-limit effect. Iris asks Kazuma if she can go on a brief adventure with his body now that she no longer needs to worry about her retainers intervening. Megumin chimes in and says she’ll monitor Iris’s movements so she doesn’t get into trouble.
Kazuma complies. Later, we see Kazuma and Claire traveling through one of Iris’s castle’s hallways. Claire interrogates Kazuma for his strange behavior but Kazuma plays everything off strategically so Claire doesn’t discover the truth about his and Iris’s body-swap fiasco. Then, the two bump into Mitsurugi. Claire praises Mitsurugi for his battle efforts. Mitsurugi butters Claire up, making her blush.
Mitsurugi tries performing a similar gesture on Kazuma but Kazuma tells Claire to execute Mitsurugi for touching him. Claire finds that comment absurd so Kazuma revokes his comment and tells Mitsurugi to scram. Kazuma asks Claire where Darkness is. Claire tells Kazuma that Kazuma’s bathing somewhere. Kazuma demands Claire to take him to the bathhouse so he can help Darkness pamper herself.
He tells Claire she can join them and Claire’s surprisingly all for it. Kazuma and Claire arrive at the bathhouse and Kazuma notices Darkness already cleaned herself up. Darkness says she doesn’t mind hopping back in. With the two ladies in front of him, Kazuma thanks Eris for everything and hops in the bath with Iris and Darkness to fulfill his nefarious fantasy.
Meanwhile, Iris and Megumin pick a fight with three adventurers. Megumin shares some crude remarks with the men and the episode closes with one of them punching Iris in the face.
The Episode Review
Like most people watching this episode, many will find that 5-6 second pause sequence between Kazuma and Eris strange. Many folks will likely be checking Crunchyroll and their internet speed to see if something weird happened during that awkward instance. Nonetheless, this anime’s fifth chapter was as hilarious as the previous ones we’ve been receiving.
However, the instance involving Kazuma, Darkness, and Claire may leave some folks uncomfortable. Although this series is known for delivering erotic humor in genius and playful ways, many may find the whole Kazuma (as Iris), Claire, and Darkness segment slightly jarring and weird. Regardless, we’re certain this scene will appear in those out-of-context anime reels you’d stumble upon on TikTok or YouTube.
That awkward exchange aside, it’s nice seeing Iris (as Kazuma) and Megumin explore the castle more. Considering the strict lifestyle Iris leads in this series (so far), it’s compelling witnessing her live her dream as a full-length adventurer, despite this body-switch fiasco having a time limit. Hopefully, this mini-adventure will give Iris the courage to confront Claire and her other retainers about going on more adventurous outings in the future.
On top of giving the Divine Treasures more depth and attention, this was a fine showcase from Konosuba: God’s Blessing On This Wonderful World Season 3. I’m excited to see what other Divine Treasures lay dormant in this fantasy setting.
