Kokdu: Season of Deity – K-drama Episode 13 Recap & Review

The Truth About Kokdu

Kokdu: Season of Deity episode 13 begins with Kokdu and Doctor Han at the location Han Cheol’s phone pinged after he was kidnapped. Thinking that Han Cheol’s body is inside the fridge, they open it and only find his phone. However, this was a trap because a bomb was attached to it, and it went off. Fortunately, Kokdu teleports Doctor Han to safety just before they get hurt. This whole time, Han Cheol was tied up and gagged not far away from the fridge, and he saw the bomb go off and thought Doctor Han and Kokdu were killed.

Kokdu teleports to safety with Doctor Han, and as expected, she’s confused about what happened. She notices Kokdu has injuries on his face, but they fade away right before her eyes, and that is when she realizes Kokdu isn’t what she thought he was.

Doctor Han asks Kokdu who he really is. That is when he explains to her that he is a deity of the dead. She begins to remember when Kokdu told her he wasn’t a human being and wasn’t Do Jin Woo, but she thought it was just Do Jin Woo dealing with a dissociative identity disorder. She then asks Kokdu where Do Jin Woo is and if he killed him. Kokdu tells him Do Jin Woo died, and he borrowed his body.

Doctor Han asks him why he needed to borrow someone else’s body if he is a deity. He reveals to her his duty of killing bad people each time he is sent to Earth every 99 years. Doctor Han then asks him if he killed Jo Bong-Pil, the sex offender in episode 2 and Choi Kang-Mo, the man who killed the little girl in episode 3, and he doesn’t deny it. Doctor Han refuses to believe it and tells Kokdu she is now scared of him.

Back at Kokdu’s house, Kokdu, alone in his room, location despaired about what just happened. He begins remembering when Doctor Han confessed that he loved him, but he kissed her before she said it to avoid breaking the curse. He even regrets thinking that there would be a happy ending for him. He worries that maybe he’s a monster and he breaks down, crying.

Meanwhile, Doctor Han is at Han Cheol’s home, thinking about Kokdu and what she just learned about him. She remembers how Kokdu promised to be with her when he proposed. Knowing he wasn’t human, she begins questioning why Kokdu promised her future.

The following day, Han Cheol comes to Doctor Han’s room to tell her he’s hungry. It’s a relief to see that he’s okay. Doctor Han makes him breakfast and even asks what he wants for dinner. Han Cheol wonders why she’s being extra nice to him. Doctor Han tells Han Cheol to quit his job as a police detective since he has been in much danger lately.

Han Cheol tells her the abductor (Joong-Sik) attacked him from behind, which is why he caught him. Doctor Han becomes angry and threatens to kill the abductor. But Han Cheol warns her that he will have to arrest her if she does something like that.

Doctor Han tells him that he’s being harsh. She also reminds him that he once said to her that it isn’t a crime for people to hide criminals if they are their family, but Han Cheol tells her that that doesn’t apply to him since he’s a police officer. She has to ensure she doesn’t get caught. Han Cheol then asks her if there’s something he wants to tell her, but she says no.

Doctor Han is cleaning the house when she wonders what she’ll do to calm her mind with all that has happened. She then goes to church for confession. Of course, Kokdu is right behind her, following her.

Doctor Han heads to church for confession, and she opens up to the priest about her emotions when her mum died and what she is going through now. She also gives the priest her engagement ring and tells her since priests are close to the deity, he can give the ring to the deity she knows (Kokdu) and tell him to be unfortunate without her.

As she walks out of the confession room, Kokdu also comes out of the room to stop her. This whole time it was actually Kokdu pretending to be the priest. Doctor Han tells him that she knows it is him but has her doubts. She asks Kokdu why he didn’t tell her the truth about who he really was and what he did.

Kokdu tells her he was scared to do so, considering her job was to save lives, and she thought murder was unforgivable. So, if she knew who he was and what he did, she would run away from him. But Doctor Han tells him that she still has the right to know and decide whether or not she wants to stay with him. Kokdu tells her he wouldn’t change his mind about not telling her the truth, even if time was turned back and he had the opportunity to do so. He would still hide the truth to keep her from running away.

Kokdu tries to convince Doctor Han to get back together with him, but she refuses. Doctor Han tells him that their relationship will have a sad ending because Kokdu won’t grow old with time like her because he isn’t human.

Kokdu tries to convince her that he will still love her regardless, but she says she will be jealous and anxious when that time comes, and she will go crazy. Kokdu tells Doctor Han that if she wants him to be human, he will. Doctor Han asks him if that’s possible. Kokdu tells her that while he doesn’t know, he will try, but until then (Kokdu returns her engagement ring), he asks her to go easy on him. Doctor Han tells Kokdu to call her only after he has found a way.

At Oh Kyung-Seung and Shin Hong-Geun’s café, Jung-Won on the phone with Sa Guk-Hwa. It seems Jung-Won is there to meet up with Han Cheol to break up with him, but she has second thoughts. Sa Guk-Hwa is convincing her to do it because he ghosted her and what she did to Doctor Han. She now knows Doctor Han is Han Cheol’s sister. As she’s still talking to Sa Guk-Hwa, Han Cheol walks in.

Jung-Won notices Han Cheol has bruises; when she asks what’s wrong, he tells her he got injured in the line of duty. He doesn’t want to tell her the truth to worry her. Jung-Won asks Han Cheol if he ate and was treated, and he says his sister has taken care of him.

Jung-Won accidentally mentions that all emergency doctors (Doctor Han is an emergency doctor) know is to stitch up wounds and nothing more. Han Cheol asks her how she knew his sister is an emergency doctor. Remember, Han Cheol doesn’t know if Jung-Won knows Doctor Han.

Jung-Won lies that he once told him that. She even jokes that Han Cheol has poor memory, and Han Cheol asks her if that’s why she wants to break up with him. He walked in on Jung-Won and Sa Guk-Hwa’s phone conversation earlier. She says yes, and Han Cheol says that he’ll do anything to change her mind. This whole time they’re talking, Oh Kyung-Seung is listening to the conversation.

Shin Hong-Geun asks Oh Kyung-Seung why she’s eavesdropping on Han Cheol and Jung-Won’s conversation. She tells him that Han Cheol is Doctor Han’s brother and Jung-Won is the woman who fought Doctor Han over Do Jin Woo.

Meanwhile, Doctor Han is at home anxiously awaiting “that call” from Kokdu. She even begins to wonder how Kokdu will turn into a human. Her phone rings, and she rushes to get it thinking it’s Kokdu calling, but it’s Oh Kyung-Seung calling to tell her about Jung-Won and Han Cheol.

Doctor Han is at Oh Kyung-Seung and Shin Hong-Geun’s café. Oh Kyung-Seung is still trying to find a way to tell her what she saw, but she can’t; then Kokdu walks in. Doctor Han asks him if he has found a way to turn into a human. He tells her that they should “match lips.” Thinking that it’s kissing, Doctor Han is pissed off and asks if this is a “frog and princess” or “the beauty and the beast” type of situation, but, Kokdu isn’t talking about that. He’s actually talking about them matching their stories about what happened when the bomb exploded earlier.

Embarrassed, Doctor Han tells Kokdu he has nothing to worry about as she will lie about what happened. Kokdu mentions she is smart, and Doctor Han starts ranting about how humans don’t need deities’ help to survive.

Kokdu asks Doctor Han if she thinks he likes being in the human realm. That is when he reveals to her about how he was punished because he fell in love. Suddenly, Doctor Han remembers her past life as Seoul Hui with Kokdu as Oh Hyun. She suddenly becomes weak, and Kokdu asks if she’s okay. She asks him if the woman he fell in love with was called Seoul Hui.

Kokdu asks how she knows that and if she remembers something. She lies and tells him she remembers how Kokdu approached her back then, asking her if she was Seoul Hui. She begins asking Kokdu if that’s the reason why he’s been following her all this time. Overwhelmed by all those questions, Kokdu tries to distract Doctor Han so; he can run away. But she doesn’t fall for it. As she’s stopping him from going, Kokdu accidentally teleports to the police station with Doctor Han.

Kokdu asks her why she followed him, and Doctor Han asks why he’s careless with showcasing his superpowers and fears someone might find out. Then, Han Cheol walks in on their conversation.

Doctor Han and Kokdu are being questioned by Detective Kim, Han Cheol’s partner, on what happened when the bomb went off. Doctor Han tells a story about how Kokdu and her ran away just when the bomb went off, and they didn’t touch or come close to it. But Detective Kim doesn’t believe it because the bomb was built to go off when someone comes close to it, meaning they must have opened the fridge. He also found it surprising that Doctor Han and Kokdu weren’t hurt.

Kokdu tries to explain when Detective Kim says they’ll know the truth when they watch a police’s bodycam footage of who was there right before the bomb exploded. Afraid it will expose the truth, Doctor Han asks Kokdu to do something to keep the truth from being revealed. She even asks him to hypnotize him, as he did to Ma Sang-Jin. He tries to do so, but he isn’t successful. Meanwhile, Han Cheol goes to the bathroom. He was also in the room, and by the way, he looked, he knew something. As Detective Kim starts to watch the video, it gets deleted.

Han Cheol is at a beach contemplating throwing away the footage when Kokdu appears. And by the way, Han Cheol reacted to his appearance; he knows the truth about Kokdu. Kokdu also knows he’s the one who deleted the footage earlier.

Han Cheol says he did it because he’s afraid something might happen to Doctor Han if people know the truth about Kokdu. Kokdu tells him that he appeared to him to reveal who he really is to Han Cheol. Han Cheol asks him why he killed so many people. He now knows he killed those criminals in the previous episodes.

Kokdu tells him that he is the deity of the dead sent to punish those who have done wrong. Han Cheol tries not to believe him, but he does. Kokdu also tells him about his mission to catch Kim Pil-Soo, but Han Cheol tells him to stay out of it. Kokdu suggests they join hands to take Kim Pil-Soo down, and he agrees. But Han Cheol also tells Kokdu not to tell Doctor Han that he now knows about Kokdu as she will be uncomfortable around him.

Kim Pil-Soo is watching the bodyguard he assigned for Yi-Deun on TV lying about Yi-Deun and Do Jin Woo. Remember, they still don’t know about Kokdu’s existence. Meanwhile, Yi-Deun is going to what seems to meet Kim Pil-Soo, when Kokdu catches him. Kokdu asks him how he will confront Kim Pil-Soo, and it seems he doesn’t have a good plan.

Kokdu tells Yi-Deun that nothing good will come out of him meeting Kim Pil-Soo, but, Yi-Deun tells Kokdu he wants to help. Kokdu starts remembering how Ok Shin discovered that Yi-Deun was killed because he helped Kokdu fight the Yuan Dynasty during their past life.

Back at Kokdu’s house, Kokdu and Ok Shin are trying to figure out why Kim Pil-Soo is doing all this to Yi-Deun. That’s when they discovered that Yi-Deun was in Kim Pil-Soo’s drug clinical trial participants list but as another identity, “Nam Se Ri.” They also figure out that there may be something wrong with his health due to the drug, which is why Kim Pil-Soo is trying to silence him. Ok, Shin suggests taking Yi-Deun to the hospital to find out.

Doctor Han is at Oh Kyung-Seung and Shin Hong-Geun’s café waiting to meet Kokdu. She begins wondering why she quickly accepts when Kokdu wants to meet her when Kokdu comes and covers her with his jacket from behind; so cute! Doctor Han asks Kokdu why he keeps appearing to her, and he tells Doctor Han it is because she calls or thinks of him. She finds it weird, but it’s the truth.

Kokdu asks Doctor Han if he can kiss her. His request pisses her off, but Kokdu tells her he promised to treat Kim Pil-Soo differently in her next life. He also tells her that deities can see a human’s past life if they kiss them. They finally kiss, and Kokdu sees how Seoul Hui (Doctor Han) killed the highest-ranking official she was going to get married to in her past life. And that official is Kim Pil-Soo in this life!

Kokdu becomes enraged, but when Doctor Han asks him what he saw in her past life, he lies about how happy she was and that he didn’t see Kim Pil-Soo.

Back at Doctor Han and Han Cheol’s home, Han Cheol finally finds out the identity of Joong-Sik. Meanwhile, Joong-Sik is trying to escape when Kokdu appears. He hits Joong-Sik, and Joong-Sik stabs him right in the same spot he stabbed in his past life as Oh Hyun. Joong-Sik was the soldier that killed Oh Hyun in episode 1 but nothing happens since he’s a deity, and he starts to strangle Joong-Sik, asking him if “Nam Se Ri” is Yi-Deun, and he says yes. Kokdu hears the police coming, and he disappears. Han Cheol comes in and arrests Joong-Sik.

Back at Kokdu’s house, it is revealed that Yi-Deun developed Thyroid cancer because of Kim Pil-Soo’s drug. Kokdu gets angry and threatens to kill everyone involved in making Kim Pil-Soo’s drug, but Ok Shin and Gak Shin convince him not to. The good news is, Yi-Deun’s cancer is at stage one, so it can be cured.

OkShin suggests Yi-Deun announce that Kim Pil-Soo’s drug is dangerous, but, Kokdu doesn’t want to because of how he died helping him in his past life. Kokdu remembers how he saw Doctor Han killing Kim Pil-Soo in her past life when he began bleeding at the spot Joong-Sik stabbed him earlier.

At the police station, Han Cheol tells Doctor Han that he has finally caught their kidnapper (Joong-Sik). He also tells her that he is required to hand him over to another team (they suspect it’s Kim Pil-Soo doing this), so he wants Doctor Han to identify him first. When she identifies him, she has a flashback of Joong-Sik being one of Kim Pil-Soo’s soldiers in her past life as Seoul Hui. She also notices her ring is broken.

At Kokdu’s house, Ok Shin and Gak Shin are cleaning Kokdu’s wound when they ask how that happened. He says that maybe the reason he’s bleeding is that he was stabbed in the same spot twice, but Ok Shin tells him that perhaps that is a sign from the Lord Deity of what’s to come.

Doctor Han goes to the jewellery shop where Kokdu proposed to get her ring fixed. She realizes the jewellery store owner is the patient she was treating at Eonju Hospital in episode 1, and she’s also the same seller in her and Oh Hyun’s past life.

The seller tells her that the ring can’t be fixed and she should forget about it, but she doesn’t want to. She gets a glimpse of the hairpin in episode 12. That is when she remembers everything in her past life as Seoul Hui, including how Oh Hyun (Kokdu) was killed because of her.

Doctor Han is crying, feeling guilty for Kokdu’s predicament when Kokdu appears again. The episode ends with Doctor Han hugging Kokdu.

The Episode Review

This episode continues to show how almost all the characters are connected to Doctor Han and Kokdu in their past lives. Kim Pil-Soo was the highest-ranking official Doctor Han was going to get married to, and Joong-Sik was the soldier who killed Kokdu when they were to run away together.

With Officer Han Cheol now knowing who Kokdu is, it’s great and surprising at the same time that he’s immediately defending and protecting. As for the war between Kokdu and Kim Pil-Soo, it will be interesting to see how things will turn out now that Kokdu knows that Yi-Deun is Nam Se Ri and he developed cancer because of Kim Pil-Soo’s drug.
