Beer and Schnapps
Episode 4 of Kleo season 2 starts with Rossbach showing up to meet Uwe and Margot in a busy restaurant. Here, the plan is put into place to get in touch with their contacts in West Germany to put their plan in place. However, this whole endeavour is throw into question when one of the women admits that they don’t have the pact. Its been intercepted…but by who?
Meanwhile, Kleo and Sven watch the drop and see if anyone picks up the documents from the park. However, they’re not alone. Multiple Stasi agents are also here doing the same thing. Kleo knows of course, and also realizes that the drop is the red bin. And even more surprising, it appears Kleo’s old work mate Jutta is part of this whole operation, as they watch her cycle off with an envelope.
The pair follow Jutta and with Sven on surveillance, Kleo goes alone inside and demands information. Jutta urges her to leave and it soon becomes clear why. The whole place is a trap and despite having multiple guns up to her, Sven manages to distract them long enough for Kleo to get the upper-hand. She even knocks out Rossbach too, who slips and smacks his head on the jukebox.
Jutta is the only one left and alone, she points out that their drop was infiltrated by an unknown entity. Someone has screwed them over and given the mission was top-secret, it would seem someone on the inside has betrayed them. This big plan for the Soviet Republic of Germany? Turns out Kleo’s grandfather was the brainchild behind this.
Kleo gets some closure with Holger in the middle of all this, realizing that she’s a very different person now compared to where she was before. He encourages her to leave this line of work but Kleo refuses, deciding to sever ties as there’s way too much at stake right now to just walk away from it all.
Over in Blagoye, near the USSR, Nikolai shows up to see his mother. He’s concerned about Kleo, given she’s digging up the past, and she encourages him to do everything he can to prevent her showing up.
Meanwhile, Jutta speaks to Uwe and breaks the bad news about the interception and Kleo’s interjection. She hands over a picture to Uwe, which is apparently his new target. It’s Sven.
Uwe hesitates before killing Sven in Kleo’s house, and she’s unaware of him being escorted out by him to the front. They race off, and Kleo curses her luck. Pjotr shows though and he reveals they’re heading off to the power plant. She promises to pay him next time for this intel, and heads back out to the garden.
No more games; Kleo immediately speaks to Ciana and demands to know where Rose is. She knows that Ciana is part of the CIA and with a gun to her, she opens up and reveals that Hotel Teger is where she’ll find her. As for Thilo, he’s heartbroken after this betrayal.
Kleo shows up to see Rose at the hotel and asks for her help in getting Sven back. She knows this is a trap to lure her in but Rose plays hardball and refuses to help. Instead, Kleo calls on Thilo. He works as a distraction, while Kleo holds Uwe up at gunpoint when he falls for her sniper trick.
Kleo leaves Thilo alone to watch Uwe and Mike with an RPG. He lets them go though as they discuss Sartre and the ethics of morality, while Kleo finds the room Sven was left in… and he’s not there.
As the episode closes out, Kleo and Thilo walk right into a trap, as their car is lifted up by a crane. Kleo points her gun at Uwe, who happens to be on the ground holding an RPG. How will they make it out of this in one piece?
The Episode Review
It was perhaps too easy to expect anything but Kleo and Thilo to walk right into a trap while the whole drama involving Ciana feels a bit meh given she and Thilo don’t have all that much chemistry together. The drama involving Kleo and her past though is far more endearing and it’s interesting to see how this is tied directly into this idea around the Soviet Republic of Germany.
Who intercepted the bag drop? Who has the files? And how will Kleo work her way out of this mess and find Sven? We’ll have to wait for the next episode to find out!
