Kleo – Season 2 Episode 2 “Object Moni” Recap & Review

Object Moni

Episode 2 of Kleo season 2 starts with us taking a look at our informant who has been spying on Kleo all this time. Two agents ambush him as he leaves his van but he kills them both with little effort. As for Kleo, she heads down to the basement and Thilo follows. He points out that the hippocampus is linked to the seahorses, which is the part of the brain responsible for our memory.

It seems like Kleo’s past may actually be the crucial puzzle piece that will help us understand the significance of the red suitcase. Quite how everything is connected though remains a mystery but one thing’s for sure – Kleo is going to find out.

Heading outside, Kleo runs into Rossbach, her old trainer from the Stasi. She knows that he’s hiding something, and it doesn’t take long before she susses what that is. He’s been in contact with Comrade Nikolai Zhukov, who happens to be part of the KGB. Unfortunately, Kleo is overpowered and choked out for her troubles.

Elsewhere, Freddy and Sven continue to search for the truth in their own quirky way. The pair show up and blackmail an agent called Reisser whom they learn has been paid off in exchange for selling files to the KGB. When Sven shows outside the office, he ends up converging paths with Kleo. The pair have a little talk about trust and the past issues between them, but Sven doesn’t notice her drop a tracker in his jacket.

Sven is quickly captured, due to Kleo passing on intel to the soldiers outside, and he’s taken down to the depths of the building and handcuffed. As Sven is interrogated, Kleo happens to be listening to all of this from the car.

Sven bribes his way out, deciding with the agent to meet for a money exchange of 50,000 marks at the fairground supply tunnel at 12pm. With the meet set, Kleo heads to the club that night, where Thilo is with the DJ up at the decks. On the dancefloor below, Kleo finds someone dressed in a Santa outfit and it brings back memories of the past. Specifically that of Nikolai talking to her as a child wearing this exact outfit.

Kleo wakes up in bed and dons another outfit, this time breaking into the Sauna. This happens to be the original place where the KGB agent wanted to meet. All of them leave under the heat as Kleo turns up the temperature. All except Alexander Belov.

Alone, Kleo demands the Stasi files. After a bit of light persuasion, Belov admits that he has copies on microfilm but they’re in Karlshorst. With the informant gone, Sven is left hanging on his own at the alternate meet spot. Rose shows up and offers a ton of money and a CIA badge in exchange for delivering Kleo and the red suitcase. Will he take it?

While we ponder this, Kleo breaks into the Karlshorst office with Belov. However, he speaks code to the receptionist, who immediately hits the silent alarm. Belov hands over the files but it immediately ends up with a big chase. She does manage to get out the building though, partly thanks to Sven who shows up in a hilariously satirical scene with his car. More importantly, Kleo manages to bag the files.

Searching through the documents, Kleo finds something related to O.O.S.A. (Officer on special assignment). It’s also linked to the US Permanent Mission in West Berlin and a code name of Bear and the subject being Moni. It would appear they have the red suitcase. The safe house appears to be Moni but as they come to this conclusion together, Sven is kicked out the house. Again.

While Kleo races off to her next target, Zhukov arrives at the KGB head office with Olga. He soon kills her, stabbing her with a flag no less, and makes a call, informing those on the other end of the line that it’s “time to move”.

This seems to be the codeword to trigger a series of incidents, which include 12 people killed in Moscow. These men seem to have links to the KGB and were in favour of Germany’s reunification too. How will this effect the play moving forward? We’ll have to wait and see!

The Episode Review

It would appear that the plot involving Kleo is going to be linked directly in with her training schedule and her past. But how that ties into what’s happening in the present, with the red suitcase and the political manoeuvring, remains to be seen.

The show continues to deliver compelling drama and the chase through the office is a definite highlight, even if it does overuse the shaky cam a bit too much during the sequence. However, there’s undoubtedly a lot to like here and the show certainly has a decent amount of pizzazz to keep watching to find out what happens next.
