Kaos – Season 1 Episode 7 Recap & Review

The Monster

Episode 7 of Kaos starts with the tacita showing up outside a caravan in the wilderness. She’s holding a sign that reads “today’s the day” and this woman happens to be Caeneus’ mum. She places a coin in her mouth, heads over to an open grave, and shoots herself.

Meanwhile, there’s a big family barbecue going on with secrets galore up in Olympus. Dionysus decides that he and Poseidon are going to bargain here. He’ll keep quiet about the affair, and in exchange he won’t tell Zeus about the mortal waltzing about in the Underworld. However, Poseidon actually does love her, and has done forever. Dionysus promises to keep their secret. Hera is jittery in the midst of this BBQ though, and when she finds out what’s going on, hopes that Minos will follow through and kill his son.

Down in the Underworld and in Medusa’s office, Orpheus makes a big show and speaks to Riddy, apologizing for wronging her. He knows he messed up by removing the coin but did so to bring her back to the real world and start again. Riddy is understandably annoyed, telling him she has things to do. She has a job and friends, including Caeneus whom she’s obviously fallen for. When Riddy finds out about Dionysus and the Fates, and the lengths Orpheus has gone to get her back, Caeneus struggles to keep his feelings in check.

Hades requests a meeting with Orpheus, and as he’s taken out the room, Medusa points out that Riddy has to go back to Earth. This is all part of their rebel scheme which they’ve had in play for a long time. They see the Gods for what they are and want the family to fall.

Medusa brings Orpheus to Hades who congratulates him for how far he’s come. However, Orpheus is shocked when he finds out he’s never going back to Earth and unfortunately, fails to convince Hades to go back on his decision, despite agreeing to die for his beloved.

Persephone is livid when she gets back to their bedroom, and tells Hades that this could have been just the message needed to send over to Zeus. Hades knows this is an act of war and believes they should “stay sacred” to the Underworld. Hades is going to stick with the Nothing and try to find a way to properly renew the souls. While he rests, Persephone double-crosses her husband and decides to send them back.

In their absence, Caeneus encourages her to go and spread the word about the lies of the Gods. As they kiss and part ways, the prophecy looks like it’s going to go ahead, as planned.

Meanwhile, Daedalus speaks the truth about Glaucus. He was in the dark all day and with nobody allowed to go down and see him, he began biting and turned into a beast. He attacked a few jailers and then one day killed a man. However, Minos was actually impressed and as such, he thought the boy could become a weapon. Daedalus helped make his mask and weapons, and then unleashed him in the labyrinth.

Ari has heard enough and decides she wants to go and see him. Unfortunately, Minos hits the button in his office and causes the minotaur to be unleashed in the labyrinth. Glaucus shows and Ari manages to get through to him, taking his mask off and comforting her brother.

However, Minos shows up with his knife. Ari brings up the prophecy and what he’s done to his son. She calls Minos a monster and defies the Gods, leading to a big fight breaking out. Glaucus gets involved here too, and eventually this crescendos with Minos doing his duty for the gods and killing Glaucus. However, Ari understands her purpose now and through it all, grabs the knife and kills Minos. She was actually the first child to come out drawing breath, not Glaucus, and just like that, the prophecy is fulfilled.

Caeneus breaks down into tears as he says goodbye to Riddy, who’s taken with Medusa to Persephone. They’re about to head back to Earth… but to what end?

The Episode Review

All the pieces are starting to slot into place here and there’s a great ebb and flow to this story now. Seeing how all of this has built up to Ari killing her father, and Orpheus and Riddy together, heading back to Earth to stop the Gods, sets things up for a thrilling finale to follow. Hopefully this one sticks the landing because so far, this has been a really solid watch.

The modern interpretation of the myths has been great to watch, and seeing how all of this is building up to a fateful encounter with the Gods vs mortals is definitely going to be something to keep our eye on. Roll on the finale!
