X Marks The Spot
Episode 4 of Kaos starts with Zeus growing ever-more erratic in his actions. With the prophecy hanging over his head, he’s determined to figure out who took his watch. Unbeknownst to him, it was actually Dionysus and all these servants are killed needlessly.
Hera sees all of this play out, and rings Poseidon from her room, telling him that they need to get this watch back. She also tells him about Zeus’ two-phase plan to escalate everything higher than the Trojans. Hera is clever and immediately susses that this could be the work of Dionysus, and has Poseidon head out to find him.
While this is going on, we learn that Prometheus and Charon used to be involved together and very much in love. He knows that Zeus is coming for him and he sows the seeds early, telling Charon that he needs to look after someone. They apparently have a “mark” and this matters more than anything. Charon agrees and swears it… just as Prometheus stabs his neck and lets him bleed out. “The great good always come at a personal cost.”
Meanwhile, Orpheus makes his way into the Underworld, alongside the other “contestant” who wants to get his son back. Dionysus tells The Fates not to reveal anything about the watch, and they agree. However, the crux of drama here stems from Orpheus, who shows up in the Underworld. He has a cross on his hand (which is not dissimilar to Charon’s, mind) and could well be who he needs to take care of here.
Although Orpheus is full-on with his prophecy and believes that he serves a higher purpose (unaware that he’s being co-opted) Caeneus is far less persuaded. He loves his dog and misses his old way of being Handler. When he visits Fotis and lets him out the cage, the dog runs off. Upon searching for him, Caeneus happens upon none other than Nax.
Nax blames himself for his death, but Charon shows up and reprimands Caeneus for the dog incident. Nax, as we soon learn, is the lost Soul we’ve been hearing about through Hades and Persephone.
At lunch. Riddy sits opposite Caeneus at the “Diver” table and questions their way of doing things. It’s clear that Riddy and Caeneus have very similar world views and outlooks on life, and they get along like a house on fire here. They’re disillusioned with their current way of living in the Underworld. Even worse, down by the Frame, Caeneus’ killers show up and taunt him before passing through to be Renewed. They also claim that his mother gave him up “freely”.
This encounter allows Riddy and Caeneus to get closer, where the latter reveals that he was actually one of the Amazons back in the day. He and Riddy discuss dating within the Underworld after this, and the idea of kissing too. Given all the senses are numbed here, it’s definitely a fair point and clearly these two are going to hook up right?
Dionysus looks after Riddy’s cat, Dennis, and on his way through Troytown, receives a call from Poseidon, who demands to know what’s going on with the watch. Well, Dionysus spills everything, revealing how he’s going to be loved for being the first God to help a mortal cross back through the Underworld. Poseidon is shocked and warns that Zeus will absolutely destroy him if he finds out about this, especially if the plan is successful.
Down in the Underworld, Anatole and Orpheus happen upon none other than Charon. He’s there to greet the winners from The Cave and he promises to drive them across the river. However, en-route they need to decide who among them is going to make it to the other side as Charon will only allow one of them to go. And Orpheus makes the choice first to kill his compatriot.
As the pair wrestle, Charon notices the mark on Orpheus’ hand and decides to save him, killing Anatole in the process. When he learns that a Fate gave him that mark, Charon realizes that this little prophecy is going to come true. Prometheus even leaves a message for him in the sand, “Thank you”, to show that he’s got the right person.
Back in Olympia, Dionysus returns with a replica watch and hands it back to Zeus who seems to be none the wiser. Zeus is grateful for the watch and opens up to his son. However, Dionysus doesn’t have the same outlook on life, and suggests he should help with his Two-Phase plan.
In the wake of this, Medusa contacts Hades and informs that they’ve found the lost Soul. This comes right off the back of Zeus promising that there’s going to be a whole lot more bodies coming his way. However, they didn’t bank on Riddy and Caeneus working together to open a trap door to a strange basement full of dead bodies. It would appear that those sent through the frame don’t get renewed after all. Uh oh…
The Episode Review
Kaos returns with another really good episode and this time we see more of both Caeneus and Riddy, specifically how their outlooks on life are rather aligned. Not only that, but we also get a good deal of drama involving Orpheus too. This is likely to result in a ton of drama going forward, especially when Riddy and Orpheus come face to face and have a much needed chat about their relationship. How will Riddy react to Orpheus taking her coin away? Will their love be rekindled or not?
All of this is left up in the air for where this one may go next though but thankfully we don’t have to wait too long to find out!
