Ariadne, The Minotaur & Love
Episode 3 of Kaos starts with a man rushing into the bathroom as a bunch of bikers show up not long after. These are The Furies, who are as old as the Gods themselves. There’s Tisi, Alecto and Meg. They roam the Earth, delivering justice where they feel it has been denied. Only those they pursue can see or hear them, and this poor guy kills himself in the bathroom. The Furies happen to have a whole list of people they’re killing off, one by one.
The third human in our tale alongside Caeneus and Riddy, as we soon find out, happens to be Ari. We saw her in episode 1, and her full name is Ariadne. In order to understand her significance, we cut back to the fateful night Riddy died. Ari is consumed by guilt after killing her brother Glaucus as a baby, rolling on top of him and suffocating the poor lad. It’s her birthday, on the day of the monument unveiling, and she’s pretty disillusioned with her family life. She also fancies her bodyguard too.
Ariadne is President Minos’ daughter, and as she greets him, this then cuts us forward to the human sacrifice and the monument unveiling. The saboteur actually happens to be Ari’s bodyguard, Theseus, who set all of this up. He allowed a bunch of men in early to replace the monument with what we see. President Minos and Ariadne are just as shocked as anyone, with the former promising punishment for whoever did this.
Over in Troytown, chaos grips the streets. A guy is arrested for defying the Gods, which we saw in episode 2 with the Dionysus and Orpheus storyline, while Minos doubles down on trying to find the God defilers. He believes this is the work of the Trojan 7, and he wants the leader, Nax. In exchange, he’ll free the other six.
Meanwhile, Zeus meets with Poseidon, God of the Sea. He’s Zeus’ younger brother and is incredulous at his brother’s plan to scare humanity back into obedience again. He believes Zeus needs to relax and that he’s embarrassing himself by getting involved in human affairs. Poseidon thinks he should leave all of this to Minos.
Ari heads over to Hera temple, and admits to the Tacita that she wants to have sex with Theseus, her bodyguard. She also wants a more docile solution to the “Trojan problem”. As for Minos, he goes to the church but he’s confronted with Poseidon instead, who demands swift justice and to kill all the Trojans.
Minos debates with Ari over this some time later, but interestingly, Ari is actually starting to see The Furies wherever she goes. For now though, she heads out with Theseus for a birthday present, to go and watch the Amazonian games, where gladiators fight to the death. This only works to make Ari more paranoid, as she admit to Theseus that she’s seeing The Furies. She believes that all of this stems back to killing her twin and swift justice is going to be carried out.
Theseus offers a way out for her, and suggests she save a life. And that happens to be none other than the Seventh Trojan, Nax. He’s the one responsible for the monument desecration. Theseus decides that Ari should speak to Minos and ask her father for redemption and forgiveness. Nax is the hope for the Trojan people and they want peace and rights – something they don’t currently have. Ari agrees, and heads back to see her dad. She wants to save all the Trojans… and her dad agrees, despite what this could mean for him.
When the Trojans are dropped off, that crazed woman happens to be there too and she screams for them all to run away. The reason for this soon becomes clear when Zeus catches wind of the news that the Trojans are alive. Poseidon shows up to see Minos and threatens him, telling him that love is not an excuse for bending to the will of the Gods. A big raid is carried out that night, as armed guards show up and make an example of the Trojan 7, hanging them on the desecrated monument.
Interestingly, it’s worth pointing out in the middle of this that Hera is actually sleeping with Poseidon behind Zeus’ back. Anyway, Ari is shocked, and alongside the betrayal of Theseus (given he was in love with Nax and not her), she’s also not happy about Minos going back on his word. However, when she heads back to her room, The Furies are there, and they’re here to discuss her brother.
The Episode Review
Here we see justice dished out to the poor Trojans, who find themselves tortured and betrayed thanks to Poseidon and Zeus having their way with President Minos. This really shows the power these Gods have, and it does look like we’re gearing up toward some retribution and a big war brewing as the Trojans hit back against the 7 being killed.
As for Ari, it’s nice to see how all the Greek myths have been slightly changed and distorted, this one being in the form of the minotaur, the labyrinth and Ariadne’s love, and it’ll be interesting to see how this trio that we’ve now met will change the course of history.
For now though, Kaos continues to deliver decent drama. Roll on the next episode!
