Preparation Period
Chapter 35 of Kagurabachi begins with the narrator explaining how the Sazanami Family handles the goods that enter their family’s warehouse. This explanation is shared in August, during a past Rakuzaichi Auction Event’s “preparation period.” Hakuri enters the building and notices an unnamed female captive named Girl With Icy Skin (GWIS) who hasn’t eaten her meal.
GWIS refuses to eat her meal because she doesn’t want anyone to purchase her. Hakuri says he’ll force her to eat because she’s valuable merchandise for the Rakuzaichi Auction Event. GWIS wants to eat with other people if that’s the case. Hakuri denies her the luxury because of her ice powers. GWIS says she’d like Hakuri to talk with her while she eats.
Hakuri accepts and discusses his finger wound with her. He says Soya injured him to amuse himself. GWIS asks Hakuri to give her his hand. GWIS heals it and suggests they escape this warehouse together since they’re both rejects. However, Hakuri knows GWIS is toying with him and rejects her offer. GWIS laughs and confirms Hakuri’s suspicions.
However, GWIS says she sympathizes with Hakuri and promises to teach him about the outside world. Hakuri tells GWIS they aren’t friends. Also, Hakuri wants to be useful to his family, so he hopes to prove that to them by completing this mission. Days pass. Hakuri’s abuse gets worse and GWIS takes note of that.
GWIS offers Hakuri admirable advice to uplift him. Eventually, GWIS’s storehouse transfer date arrives. Hakuri offers to take GWIS outside so they can eat and chat. Then, we return to the present briefly. Soya sends Hakuri into a wall with his sorcery skills and belittles Hakuri. Then, we return to the past with GWIS and Hakuri.
Hakuri notices GWIS holding a knife to her throat. GWIS plans to end her life and Hakuri tries persuading her to stop. GWIS feels she’ll be abandoned or treated as a tool because of her ice powers. Despite Hakuri’s words, GWIS takes her life, leaving him with immense guilt and pain. Then, we return to the present.
Soya attempts to flee the area and looks at the pliers he used to abuse Hakuri in the past. The chapter closes with energy emerging from Hakuri’s eyes.
The Chapter Review
It appears Hakuri has more hidden potential as a Sazanami Family member than he even realizes. Based on the final panel’s developments, along with the intel he shared with GWIS about Soya losing his abuse tools, it seems Hakuri has a subconscious storehouse ability. This could lend him the aid he needs to combat Soya, especially if he houses other menacing tools from Soya’s past in there. Therefore, fans may be in for a brutal battle ahead between these Sazanami brothers.
That update aside, Kagurabachi’s done a nice job at giving Hakuri and others some depth these past few chapters. It’s nothing much, but it at least gives fans reasons to cheer or despise the new cast members. At the same time, this chapter contains some harsh themes of abuse, slavery, and others. It was unfortunate seeing GWIS commit suicide despite Hakuri offering her a chance to experience life outside of a prison cell. You can tell he felt comfortable talking with someone who can relate to him.
All in all, this was an enjoyable chapter of Kagurabachi. Like prior chapters, this one gives fans insight into the dark activities that transpired around the Sazanami Family in the past. It also offers Hakuri a fighting chance to defeat Soya for good.
