Thunderclap, Part 2
Episode 17 of Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 begins with Megumi planning to summon a powerful Shikigami. We cut to Satoru discussing the bad blood between the Zenin and Gojo family with Megumi. He reveals both leaders killed themselves in the end. Meanwhile, Sukuna senses what Megumi plans to do and tells Uraume he needs to leave. However, he believes he’ll regain his freedom soon. Megumi summons Mahoraga and gets attacked by it.
Mahoraga fights Shigemo who begs Megumi to send it away. Sukuna arrives and saves Shigemo from perishing. He knows Megumi planned to die after conducting this ritual involving Mahoraga. Sukuna plans to defeat Mahoraga to save Megumi from dying because he needs him for undisclosed reasons. The two duke it out within the city. Sukuna uses his domain expansion technique “Malevolent Shrine” to end the fight. He tells Shigemo to get lost, but he, unfortunately, runs out of luck and perishes.
Sukuna sends Megumi away somewhere and returns to the spot where he fought Mahoraga. Yuji regains control over his body and barfs at the horrid sight in front of him. Yuji hopes his life will end soon because he doesn’t want more innocent people to die because of him.
The episode closes with Nanami walking down the subway hall in a disheveled state.
The Episode Review
Once again, Studio Mappa gives fans another gloriously animated spectacle to observe with this week’s episode of Jujutsu Kaisen season 2. Many fans will be at the edge of their seat watching Sukuna utilize his exceptional martial arts and techniques against Mahoraga. The battle’s aftermath will leave fans in much shock similar to Yuji’s.
Unfortunately, Yuji won’t be sharing a similar reaction to it all. From the collapsed cityscapes to the many lives Sukuna’s taken, fans can’t blame Yuji for wanting to rid himself of this world. The beginning portion of the episode involving his relative was a nice addition to the episode too. It reminds folks of Yuji’s resolve to protect lives, not take them away.
That said, it’ll be interesting to observe how this chaos will affect Yuji’s character moving forward. Yuji aside, it’s great to see that Nanami’s alive and well. However, it’s likely he’s running out of steam. Hopefully, we’ll get to see him pull off one final noble act if the story plans to write him off next week.
Overall, this was a delightful feast for the eyes and Studio Mappa deserves a lot of praise for the effort that went into crafting this visual gem.
