Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld – Episode 13 Recap, Review & Ending Explained

Lock-In

The explosive finale for Jentry Chau VS The Underworld begins with the Lock-In at school beginning. Everything seems to be going well…apart from a big problem. Moonie is not herself of course, as she’s been taken over by the Mogui, who looks set to cause chaos at Riverfork High.

Mog-Moonie heads outside and conjures a whole bunch of demons to help in their fight. Making sure Jentry can’t leave, they set up a forcefield around the school and teleport it over to the Diyu.

Jentry is unaware of this, as she still thinks she’s leaving the Lock-in and heading en-route to Korea. Michael, unfortunately, finds out in the worst way possible, and the pair end up talking in private, airing out their concerns.

Michael has always been in the shadows when it comes to the connection Jentry had with Kit before he was killed, but similarly he’s dealing with demons of his own. He continues to see horrid visions and the current recurring one is of him and Jentry fighting demons together.

How does Mogui reveal the truth to Jentry?

Well, that soon comes to fruition, while Moonie speaks to Jentry in the Vice Principal’s office alone. She starts sobbing and tries to convince Jentry to give up her powers. Of course, Mog-Moonie has an ulterior motive, especially when Jentry refuses to follow her plan.

Just like that, Mog-Moonie reveals herself and demands Jentry give up her powers in exchange for giving the real Moonie back. The trouble is, they’re in for a big fight as demons burst through the windows of the school and begin attacking everyone.

While the others try to fight their way out, Mr Wheeler unknowingly saves Jentry by opening the door to the office. This distracts Mog-Moonie with enough time for her to bust out, and while Michael and Jentry fight off the demon, Stella does the rounds outside, taking out three of the four demons with the help of Ed. Only… she ends up caught by the fourth.

What turns the tide of battle?

With things looking bleak, it’s Gugu who shows up in time and manages to save Ed and Stella. With the spell broken, Michael and the others work to get the students back home through a portal. Unfortunately, Jentry is left behind, trying to stop Mog. Things look bleak, and Jentry almost loses her powers in the process. That is, until Gugu shows and saves the day. She staves off Mog and pulls Moonie free from the Mogui’s curse.

With this spell broken, and apologies shared for Gugu and Moonie, the critter tries to slither away, only to be stabbed with Gugu’s trident. Jentry does eventually burn this demon to a cinder, destroying it completely. However, it appears to be too late for Gugu.

Gugu removes the sacred belt and places it on Jentry to save her from the stab she endured. Gugu, unfortunately, passes but not before mentioning how proud she is of Jentry for embracing her powers and ancestry.

Jentry takes the special pearls and decides that if she can’t save her grandmother, then she can at least secure her memories. And with that, Gugu passes away.

How does Jentry Chau VS. The Underworld end?

We then cut forward three weeks later. Jentry is preparing to leave, but before she does, she looks over the memories that she and Gugu shared. They spent a lot of time together in the past, and Gugu was really with her through thick and thin. Gugu also has a special necklace for Jentry in the drawer, which she places around her neck.

Jentry and Moonie move to Seoul, but given Jentry’s new powers, she can move back and forth to Texas as many times as she needs to. Finally, after all the hardships and sacrifices along the way, Jentry gets her happily ever after.

The Episode Review

Jentry Chau vs. The Underworld has been a real surprise on Netflix and this final episode exemplifies why. The storytelling has been solid throughout, there’s been some sacrifices along the way, and plenty of drama and high-stakes action to close this one out.

The show does draw parallels to coming of age dramas like Buffy, and that blend of supernatural fighting, with an acceptance of one’s own abilities and powers definitely harks back to puberty and coming to terms with your own changing body.

Whether that was the intention or not, the show works really well when viewed through that lens, and this finale ends with an emotional, heartfelt goodbye… and then happy ending for Jentry. Even so though, what a wild, emotionally charged ending its been up until that point!

  1. Jentry Chau Vs The Underworld was the best show I’ve ever seen in my life. I really hope Echo Wu makes a new season. Like, what’s up with Michael’s powers? And do any MORE demons come? I have a lot more questions but they would NOT fit here. So those are what I want to know. This is the end of my comment. Thank you for listening.
